Learning Survival Japanese in Japan

Interesting, Dan! Now you mention it... the German and Scottish "ch" is similar, isn't it! Yes... people wanting to practice their English "skills".... I want to start a timer and make them pay by the minute!

This is a great video which I can relate tae rather well. I moved tae Germany some 25 years ago and my experience was somewhat similar tae yers. Learning german for a scot is a tad bit easier as we do pronounce a lot of things in a similar manner, particularly if the word contains 'ch' in it, as in Bach, Loch and so forth and we also share a lot of words and of course I didnae had tae learn a different writing system. That bein said, the major issue initially was that everyone and his cousin was tryin tae test their english skills on me. Only when I moved tae a different area I started tae learn german proper as I was forced tae. My later father-in-law and my wife helped a lot there and nowadays I'm quite fluent in it, still have a slight accent of course which gets stronger when I'm gettin tired. The point is that my experiences were similar in a lot of ways and in the beginning I had tae live and work there using 'survival german' too. Thanks for sharing this background info with us.
