Also i can't remember if you fully mentioned it during the video but i had a thought when watching but what happened to the fields/rice paddies attached to the old farm house? were they sold off to another farmer before you bought?

This video on learning to understand and deal with "personal space" issues is probably among the top 5 most important on navigating Japanese cultural norms, right up there with "Don't get into an argument at the post office (or anywhere else)". That one saved my bacon. I remember last year's video about the family at the river. This kind of thing is so outrageous to us that it would make for an entire half-hour episode of "Seinfeld": George goes to his secret spot along the river for a little quiet time, and the only other people there choose to set up right in front of him. Then the rest of the episode is spent with each of the cast dealing with their own awkward social encounters with "close-sitters". It takes a reminder or two to really absorb this lesson on how things are done. I think I've got this one between my ears, now. But I can only imagine what kinds of uncomfortable encounters may have occurred between locals, and foreigners who had no clue. I'm not sure how I would have responded to the "family at the river" situation, myself. I'd have probably looked a lot like George, open-mouthed, speechless, looking left and right in a "What-?" kind of gesture.
