Cycling Assassins in Japan!

Insane, isn't it. "Everyone does it, so everyone does it". They all act like they are in a huge hurry, even when they are not. (I might carry an umbrella next time - good idea!)

This really makes me nuts! It's absolute chaos, and a real paradox considering how orderly the rest of Japanese society is. I live in an excellent bike-city. Montreal has hundreds of km of dedicated bike paths, some of which have their own traffic lights and concrete medians to separate them from vehicle traffic, especially in the downtown core. Being culturally French in its roots, Montreal has a pretty "laissez-faire" attitude about a lot of things, but NOBODY would ever think to do this. The odd fool does, and risks getting swatted with an umbrella, or pushed right off his bike. It outrages people. I simply do not comprehend how this circus is allowed to exist in a country where the trains are more punctual than a Swiss watch. It's like someone designed the worlds most perfect cities, but forgot to include the part about the bikes. I often consider biking through Japan, but I'd never be able to do the sidewalk thing.
