I remember that when my husband moved from Maryland to SoCal, he could not get over the casualness with which people planted things like geraniums just out in the ground; they were carefully tended and prized windowsill plants where he came from, but we just threw out a stem or two, and presto! full garden.

When I lived in California, it was welcome as a big space-filler-up, but here in Texas, it doesn't grow as fast, and people actually grow it in little pots, which seems ludicrous to me! LOL! Bougainvillea is the same: it's an aggressive grower (although not much of a "spreader" except for the size of the single plant, but in Texas, it's a potted plant.
