Quarantine

So authorities chose female officers to keep the infected in quarantine in a weak attempt to contain the ravaging virus.
Maria was one of them, a respectful officer in the NYPD.
In the first weeks she treated them with some dignity, gave them food and kept them in an aquarium, but in time, seeing how no one cared for how she treats them, and the fact no one paid her extra for doing that, she became more playful and more cruel with them.
She started treating them like a bunch of pathetic bugs, redundant beings that only waste her time. She started having a megalomaniac feeling of a goddess, for a few times she even made them worship her, it’s like her darkest side slowly took over until there was nothing left but a cruel owner of shrunken slaves.
At some point she decided to humiliate them even further, she bought transparent heels, made some holes in them and pushed them inside.
“If you want to survive you’ll have to fight for the sweat that drips from between my toes, that’s your only food from now on”, she said, ignoring their pleas and cries.
Some of them managed to survive like that for a very long time, but within 3 years, no one was left.
She enjoyed knowing that they all died starving beneath her feet, no one cared, no one did anything to stop her, it made her feel more powerful than ever, it made her crave for more slaves.
That was the story of many of the first victims of the shrinking virus.
