Romanji & Other Mysteries in Japan

Comments

Hmmm... from a German perspective Japanese pronunciation of letters is very similar to German. Hearing (many, not all) native English speakers speaking Japanese is pretty painful for my ears, although my level is way below theirs, to be honest. However, They don’t pronounce Japanese well either. ;) But I totally get your point in teaching English with Japanese alphabet sounds... oh boy, no good combination. And funny story: once I visited a concert in Nagasaki and tried to read Beethoven in Katakana - almost broke my tongue!!

ei - 'eight', 'height'. Not all of Japanese confusion about English is their fault. An Indian programmer at work once complained about English not having enough letters. Thinking about how many letters we need to combine in order to make sounds, he may be right. I'd hate to have to explain how to pronounce 'spaghetti' to a Japanese person.
