Intermission  -  Otherworld Reincarnation Office Scrutiny

That day, I was pulled from my duties as reincarnator guide, to undergo scrutiny about my recent work.

I was presently standing right in the middle of the scrutiny room.

Honestly! Why am I being called like this again!?

Just a while ago, I was grilled about the eight reincarnators that died immediately after their transfer, because I should have guided them with more care. In the end, they said there wasn’t anything exactly wrong with my services, though.

I was grumbling and muttering under my breath, when the inspector sitting diagonally from me spoke.

“Hmm? You are thinking ‘why am I on the receiving end of a scrutiny?’, are you?”

“Aaah!!”

That’s when I recalled how this room worked.

Here, the person under scrutiny has all their thoughts revealed to the inspectors.

“Indeed. Do not worry, though: the issue brought up in the last meeting has no bearing today.”

Why am I here, then!?

“We need to talk about the last person you reincarnated.”

The last one? Oh crap…

“Looks like you already know something is going on.”

Don’t think! Don’t think! Don’t…aah, whatever! I can’t hide it anyway!

Half out of desperation, I decided to state my honest thoughts.

“Yes, I admit that something bad is happening. But I do not think I am the only one responsible! First of all, my superior should be standing here too. He interrupted the reincarnation process many times, so I had to hurry. According to the rules, the reincarnation process should be prioritized above everything else. Even if you tell me now that I haven’t explained enough, I can’t accept it as my fault! Aren’t there more problems in the reincarnator selection process and training system, anyway? Despite that, all responsibility goes to a mere guide like me! What do the chiefs and directors think of this!?”

I was breathing heavily by the end of my rant.

Receptionists were nothing more than guides, in the end.

Our work consisted in sending reincarnators to other worlds, as picked by the otherworld reincarnation management office, using the “training system” they developed, so the reincarnators could have stats sufficient to survive in the new world.

I was trying to do my job and send the new reincarnator to their new life, and despite my superior’s interference I pulled it off! Why should I be reprimanded, anyway?

The inspector, however, continued plainly.

“Hmm. Interesting point of view, but it is irrelevant now.”

What do you want from me, then!?

Did I just rant about unrelated things, and only worsened my position?

“You do know that the training facility is a subspace built by the reincarnator’s manager, the otherworld’s deity, using resources provided by our reincarnator office, yes?”

Of course I do!

“You are also of course aware that the flow of time in this subspace can be adjusted, to facilitate its management.”

Yes, yes, I do! Who doesn’t!? Wait…ah!!

A certain possibility emerged in my mind.

The inspector continued.

“The advised training settings are for an hour in real time to correspond to one month in the subspace. Thanks to that, a three month training period would correspond to just three hours in the otherworld reincarnation offices. This makes it possible for us to manage a great number of reincarnators at the same time.”

I opened my mouth, as cold sweatdrops lined my forehead.

“I am aware of that, of course. I admit that I let the last reincarnator be for about fifteen hours. How is that my fault, though!? That happened because I was called here for another meeting! Are you satisfied by blaming everything on a low-ranking employee like me!? It’s unfair!”

The inspector nodded.

“Yes, we are aware of the circumstances that caused your inability to check on the reincarnator’s status for fifteen hours. The issue at hand is that you failed to report it! Besides, did you properly examine the reincarnator’s abilities? You should have checked if there was anything that could cause problems after the reincarnation, and report any issues you found!”

I sighed to myself. How could I report anything, after being grilled in a meeting like that? I tried to formulate a reply, in the politest way I could…not that it mattered much, since my thoughts were open for everyone to see…

“The candidate wasn’t a good fit, isn’t that the whole issue!? They took ten whole months to reach level 10, after all! But even if they ended up training for fifteen months, in the end their abilities were sufficient, weren’t they? When the candidates have faulty abilities, the training period can be extended to accommodate them. There are precedents too. I fail to see why I am being accused here!”

The inspector took a heavy sigh.

“You really do not understand what you have done, do you…”

What? What is he even talking about?

“According to the conditions you have set…one hour in real time corresponds to one year in the virtual subspace."

Eh..? Not one month, but…one year…!? But then, why didn’t he level up more…?

“The candidate spent fifteen whole years in the training facility. Furthermore, they willingly stopped leveling up, for ten years.”

I couldn’t wrap my head around the concept. What was the point of not leveling up?

The inspector continued.

“This candidate, while not leveling up, has attained enough power to destroy the whole facility. Did you not see the alert messages? They should pop up in case the facility is in danger of destruction. If you did, you would know that this candidate has enough power to annihilate the world they have been reincarnated in!”

W-WHAAAAATTT!?!

It was only then that I realized I had made an irreparable mistake.
