That is how and why Japanese travel, Brian. Drive to Nagano to buy apples. Drive to Osaka to buy some tasty bread (but ate it on the way home). Want to go to Italy to eat the food. We hear it all the time.

My last visit was with my adult nephew, and a couple of his buddies. They're REALLY into food. I'm more of an "important sites" kind of guy. Well... he taught me a whole new way of tourism that I think I'll follow from now on:
SCHEDULE YOUR VISIT AROUND FOOD.
His itinerary was based around sampling types of food, and visiting known restaurants. As he said, "Everybody's got to eat! Food makes people happy." And man... THE consistently best food I've ever had has been in Japan.
FOLLOW THE FOOD FIRSTLY, and the "important sites" on your itinerary will be seen. No worries about that. But when you take care of the tummy... the whole trip becomes so much better.
