Today’s Salon Cancelled

Hallo lovely people! I’m in the middle of a routine Glucose Tolerance Test (preggo admin), but they started the test late, so I will be lying around feeling vaguely unpleasant and having blood drawn at intervals to make sure I don’t have gestational diabetes during the time scheduled for this week’s salon, rather than happily sitting down with a nutritious snack and a cuppa to do the thing, as I had originally planned.

I did contemplate running the salon anyway, but have concluded it would probably a bit rude to be juggling a computer and ignoring the nice nurses who need to steal and label my blood while chatting with you lovely Patreonites. Either rude to the nurses or rude to you, or maybe both. All completely aside from the small but non zero possibility that I’ll go green and woobly.

(If you don’t know the glucose tolerance test, they make you fast, then they take your blood, then they make you just chug about 250ml of sugar syrup and deal with that with the tools available to you in your emotional landscape, and about an hour later they take your blood again, and an hour after that more blood. So it’s basically a recipe for feeling queasy for a couple of hours.)

So far I have spent about half an hour thinking about how mechanical and heavy handed some medicine is, (if you’ve ever seen a knee reconstruction) compared with how precise and almost magical some of it is. This particular test has that slightly heavy handed feeling, so I’m wondering if it’s one of those things that they haven’t figured out a better (less queasy) alternative for because pregnancy health is a weird research cul-de-sac for many good and some quite bad reasons.

This week we have a Book Club on Friday, (see the calendar for your local time over at the linktree) and the two writers workshops, so I hope to see you there or on the discord.

They called mine a "glucose challenge" Is that more fun than a test?

I had to have GTTs every other month for 3 years as part of a drug trial. I just learned to slam the bottle of sugar drink as fast as possible to minimise the sickly sweet taste. The only test worse than that was a Heart Stress Test where they gave me an injection which caused a splitting headache, flushed face and feeling of impending doom. Good luck to you on the gestational diabetes test. I hope you enjoyed the cup of Institutional Tea provided at the end.
