I discuss LDR's use of diction, imagery, metaphor, symbolism and more in this second NFR track.

YES! I second this!!!

Kathryn

The full version is on Genius Lyrics I think, can't wait to see what you think!!

I'll have to check that out for sure!

If you liked Lana’s poetry book, you just have to read her Ride Monologue. Omgggg ur gonna live for it. I’d kill for an analysis

Yes! I can definitely tell that she likes to play around with gender roles/stereotypes/expectations! I can see that in both of the first two tracks!

English Teacher KP

That could connect back to the first song on the album when she says she's been painted blue.

Wanda Smith

I'm pretty sure the "I'm your man" part is metaphorizing and subverting gender stereotypes. She spends the entire song stating that she is powerful, that she is strong, that she can be the guide, everything that the male figure symbolically represents in a relationship. And I also see that the song is talking about her public view, because many people when seeing that in most of her songs she puts herself as submissive and fragile, and she always connects to the fact that she is a woman indirectly, think this is part of her essence. And what she's saying here is no, she's layered, she's deep, she insn’t just a fragile, sad woman label, she can be the man if she wants to be. And she assumes this “masculine” role when she claims that she can save the man on the boat, she is in control.

Pedro Medeiros

Now that you said that, I can totally hear "void", too!

English Teacher KP

Thanks so much for this! This context definitely helps!

English Teacher KP

Thank you so much 💖💖💖

English Teacher KP

I'm so glad you like it!!!

English Teacher KP

Haha, this seems very like a very Lana thing to do 😂😂😂

English Teacher KP

Love this!

English Teacher KP

I hear "void" instead of bolt or board, since she follows it up in verse two with saying she's dark and deep. But I also have a hard time understanding her when she sings.

Wanda Smith

You are right about this being to a very specific person! Here is an exact quote from Lana discussing what the song is about! "The song is about this time I took a walk late at night with a guy I was seeing, and we stopped in front his friend’s apartment complex, and he put his hand around my shoulder, and he said, “I think we are together because we’re both similar, like we’re both really messed up,” and I thought it was the saddest thing I’d ever heard. And I said, “I’m not sad, I didn’t know that’s why you thought you were relating to me on that level, I’m actually doing pretty good.” And he was upset, and that’s when I wrote the song."

Loving this series so far! You make me appreciate her work in a whole new way :) Also, I've spent quite some hours with 'Violet bent backwards over the grass' and it has really done things to me... profoundly! Thanks for the recommendation

oh and btw im pretty sure there's no lyric booklet for this album, lana said it's too much work because some of the songs are almost 10 minutes long lol! so not sure what the official lyrics are

j

lana is from ny! she was born in manhattan. venice bitch also refers the next song on the tracklist with that title (which is almost 10 minutes long btw lol) she has talked about that first line about someone taking her sadness out of context and essentially explained that it was somebeing saying that they're together or relate to each other because they're both damaged and fucked up and she was kinda like ...i'm actually doing fine dude

j

Love this! In that case, maybe she's implying that Marilyn is also not a candle in the wind...there was certainly more to her than her tragic end, afterall!

English Teacher KP

Making comments mid-video and Lana has actually compared herself to Marilyn before! In a video for her song National Anthem, she actually puts herself in both the shoes of Marilyn AND Jackie Kennedy, even singing her own rendition of “Happy Birthday Mr President”!
