Manic Analysis- "You Should Be Sad"

I discuss the way Halsey achieves exposition and characterization through her use of diction, imagery and more!

I really enjoyed this one, y'all!

Manic Analysis- "You Should Be Sad"

Oh wow! I had to Google who G-Eazy was, but this is so interesting! Thanks for the tea!

English Teacher KP

I am so glad you enjoyed this video! I can't wait for "I'm Not Mad"!

If you didn’t yet know who this person is about, it’s the rapper, G Eazy. Halsey wrote her most popular song to date called Without Me after finding out that G Eazy cheated on her in every state while on tour. They had a song together called Him and I, and they performed it together on good morning america the moment after she found out he cheated. Her face is so heartbreaking while performing that song. The most powerful performance of Without Me was live on SNL where the backdrop is G Eazy’s “breakup note” where the words say “ashley, I cheated. I’m sorry.” And then all over the page it says “in New Orleans”, “in Tampa”, “at home in our bed”, “in more places I can’t remember”. Highly recommend the SNL performance after you hear the song. So powerful. The music video is also great and she got a G Eazy lookalike to play him lol.

Halsey had 3 miscarriages, but it was never confirmed any with G Eazy. Personally, I really don’t think Halsey would’ve written that line if she had a miscarriage with G as it meant so much to her. it was confirmed with the ex that was talked about all throughout Hopeless Fountain Kingdom. She said she had a miscarriage on stage while on tour💔

Nikki S

Thanks for recommending I’m Not Mad, I also commented about that. So similar! It’s my favorite song other than 929❤️

Oh my gosh! I enjoyed this so much! One of my top 5 favorite Halsey songs, if not top 3! You might not be planning on reacting to the extended version of the album, but please listen when I tell you that you will also love the song “I’m not mad” which is a deluxe track that is really similar sounding and lyrically to You Should Be Sad ❤️it’s my most listened to song of all time on my Spotify haha!

Great point! This is absolutely possible! I live in North Carolina, and we definitely still say "crocodile tears" here. I would be super interested to know what people in American states like Florida say since alligators are so prevalent there!

English Teacher KP

That is so incredibly heartbreaking! I can't imagine her pain!

English Teacher KP

I think Alligator Tears is just an example of how language can evolve and in the Americas it would make sense for Crocodile would change to Alligator. The original saying refers to Nile Crocodiles however there are no Crocodiles in the Americas, they are Alligators. So it's basically replacing one animal that isn't in the part of the world you are in replaced with one extremely similar and often indestinguishable to some people but are more common with the word for.

the thing that gets me so much about the line "i'm so glad i never had a baby with you" is halsey has endometriosis and had a miscarriage with the ex this song is about (i believe so at least) so that's an extremely painful subject and that fact that she's glad of ANY part of that shows how bad he was

Happy birthday to your son! I love your thoughts on this album so far. I took the ending lines of “you should be sad” to be kind of a response to “I’m sorry”. Like yeah, you SHOULD be. Not so much he’s not sad, but that he deserves that sadness for wronging her! Can’t wait for more 🥰

I knew you’d like this one! I think you might like the next one as well, it has a more upbeat sound than most of the other songs from the album. It also has some very well written lines (as usual!)

I love the tea-spilling in this song. It’s scathing and deservedly so. The music video is fun too because the outfits she wears pay homage to several women in music she considers “badass idols” of hers. I love how you connected it to Graveyard bc you are absolutely right. I think someone else mentioned in a comment to another video about what Halsey went through with their miscarriage, which happened right before they went on stage to perform, and what happened afterward. With her fertility struggles, it makes that line so much more impactful. You’ll be able to draw a connection between it and “More,” which I’m really excited for you to react to (but have tissues ready).

and happy birthday to your son of course! x

a song that’s kind of similar to this one is „I’m not mad“ which is also on this album! i actually don’t like either of them that much but I’m glad you liked this one!! i definitely love the line I’m so glad I never ever had a baby with you cause you can’t love nothing unless there’s something in it for you, it’s so telling

j

Ah I'm so glad you loved this song, and happy birthday to your son!! In Halsey's poetry book she talks about this relationship and how he wasn't just verbally abusive but he do drugs and then become physically violent. It was incredibly toxic, but they were pretty serious for a while. Happy she got out <3 also, I feel like you'd love her album Hopeless Fountain Kingdom just to listen to, it's directly inspired by Romeo and Juliet and tells a modern version of it from beginning to end. It's very similar to this lyrically in that it's more straightforward, but there are so many bangers off that album <3

Camila Dejesus

That makes total sense! It's pure poetry for sure!

English Teacher KP

That must have been absolutely heartbreaking for them at the time. I suppose that means that they were actively trying to conceive; it just goes to show the seriousnes of the relationship, and it makes this all the more heart-wrenching 😭😭😭

English Teacher KP

The line "I'm so glad I never ever had a baby with you" has a deeper meaning too because Halsey has been outspoken about her experience with multiple miscarriages

Watching these is reminding me that this album and Halsey’s poetry book came out the same year. Some excerpts from poems actually became lyrics on this album and vice versa which might be why you enjoy them even if the sound isn’t your style.
