Lover Analysis Part XI- "It's Nice to Have a Friend"

DISCLAIMER- Y'all. The technology gods have not been on my side these past couple of weeks! Today, my camera totally died while I was filming. It happened about halfway through. You can still read and hear the song lyrics, though. You can also still hear me discussing the song lyrics. Since the lyric analysis is the most important part, I figure it will be ok! I sincerely apologize, though! This is a new camera, and I did not realize that it wouldn't allow me to charge it while using it as the webcam like my last one did.

I do hope you enjoy this video, though. I had a hard time making it. I get very personal in the video about a loss I experienced, so TRIGGER WARNING. For me, friends are the family that we choose. They are soul connections that cannot be replaced. I cherish all of my friendships dearly. I love that friendship can change. It can be platonic and romantic. Here, Taylor captures that perfectly. I'm not sure what or whom this song is about specifically, and I do not think it matters. What matters to me is the beautiful way Taylor uses symbolism, parallelism, imagery and diction, along with familiar motifs, to tell a touching story of a transitioning friendship.

I always loved this one. It's special 🌷

This was one of my favs on Lover and i remember the day she announced Folklore i was hoping the whole album would have a vibe similar to this πŸ˜‚ I love your definition of a friend. I'm not sure how to even add to that, cause you summed it up so perfectly. My bff of 20 years told me I was her platonic soulmate, and after hearing your definition i have an even deeper understanding of what she meant. Great analysis as always!

I’ve never really liked this song and it’s been a skip for me - (which is 3 songs total in Taylor discography - and 2 are about Kanye). I’m glad I watched your analysis though because at least now I can have a different appreciation of it. Thanks for continuing to breakdown her music. It’s soooo nice to see others appreciation of her talent. ☺️

Friends to lovers is a great trope! Though I'm probably toxic because I love a good enemies to lovers trope in drama πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

I ADORE this song. Maybe it’s because friends to lovers is one of my favorite troupes lol, but seriously, I really love this song! I personally think it’s probably just a made up story line that was possibly inspired by real events. Also, I think your definition of friendship is spot on. I also don’t have many friends, but the ones I do have are people I’m very close with, and they really do feel like family πŸ₯°

Yes! I will be analyzing that song next week πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ

I wasn't sure, but are you going to do the song "Soon You'll Get Better" at any point? That song is deeply personal to me but I know it makes people uncomfortable. Actually that's one of the things I love most about it - it's incredibly honest and relatable. It would be good to talk through all the English-y things there, if you're able/want to.

You actually defined "friend" perfectly - one of the most important elements of a friendship is that you protect each other.
