Kakegurui: Ten Consecutive Guaranteed Hits

Volume 1 Chapter 42: If You Want to Gamble, Don't Cheat!

Among these facilities, aside from the employed staff, some of the service providers were students who had become "livestock." The wages from these jobs within the school were far better than outside, making this high school arguably the best-treated in the world, not considering gambling, of course.

However, due to a new policy instituted by the new Student Council President, every student had to pay an additional fee each month. If these fees were considered membership dues to maintain these facilities, Kiyohei was willing to pay.

For a minimum of 100,000 yen per month, students could enjoy all the free services offered by these public places. Such facilities would be popular even outside the school, considering that in other places, a personal training session in a gym alone could cost around 201,352 Yen per month. Yet here, not only could students use the gym for free, but they also had access to professional trainers at no extra cost. It was quite a deal for those who used these services.

It was unfortunate, however, that Kiyohei didn't see many students who shared his leisurely attitude. Moreover, the school wasn't open to the public.

For most of the time, these facilities were probably deserted as students were engrossed in gambling.

Kiyohei adopted a critical stance against capitalism's extravagance while Kurume unabashedly enjoyed the school's services. The range of services offered at this school tempted Kiyohei to never leave its premises.

But there was a downside. The school's housing wasn't available for rent. Hyakkaou Private Academy was similar to a university with loose student management and its own student dormitories. However, these rooms were only open to students who had attended the school since junior high.

Of course, the school didn't restrict leaving, and anyone could return home every day. In fact, most wealthy elite children went home daily, leaving only the gambling-enthusiast students on campus.

For students like Kiyohei, who had transferred midway, it was either attending as a day student or living in the school's hotel.

Among all the facilities, the hotel was an exception and didn't offer discounts to students. A standard room alone costs 20,000 yen per night. And this was for the most basic room; there were also options like suites and themed rooms, which were even more expensive.

Most students stayed in the dormitories provided by the school. Those students who had entered based on their own merits wouldn't choose to stay in such an expensive place.

Kiyohei couldn't fathom who would willingly pay for such an unaffordable place. He complained to Kurume about this, only to notice her face turning red as she looked away and whispered, "Actually, this place is for couples to rest. If anyone bets their body in gambling, the Student Council also serves as an arbitration center to supervise both parties in fulfilling the penalty..."

"I see..."

Kiyohei felt a bit awkward and quickly changed the subject, saying, "By the way, can even one's body be used as a bet? I thought the Student Council would regulate these things."

Kurume responded, "Whether it's property, vehicles, or even one's body, as long as both sides agree that the stakes are equivalent, the bet is established. The Student Council doesn't interfere with established bets. There's an arbitration committee specifically for that, ensuring the winner receives the agreed-upon stake."

Most of the Student Council members were girls, and they ensured the rights of female students. But if someone lacked self-respect and bet their body during gambling, that was entirely their own choice, and the Student Council wouldn't intervene.

After leaving the hotel, Kiyohei wanted to visit the location of the white tower, but unfortunately, the gate leading there was locked and not open to the public. Kurume explained that the building had been under construction for half a year, but the owner's identity was mysterious; no one knew who funded its construction.

Around the time school ended in the afternoon, Kiyohei and Kurume left the cinema.

They had chosen the movie themselves, and the entire theater was only occupied by the two of them. While enjoying the complimentary popcorn and cola provided by the cinema, they comfortably watched the movie, spending a fairly pleasant afternoon.

If you ignored the gambling aspect, this school was indeed the best choice for enjoying life.

Kiyohei didn't know whether to thank or resent his thrifty father. After the movie ended, Kurume left the school. She had transferred here during her third year of junior high and didn't have dormitory accommodation, so she commuted home every day.

Kiyohei stayed in the school and took a tour, arriving at the club building. As expected, Mary was present.

Kiyohei could tell that Mary was impulsive, and once she set her mind on something, it was hard to change her. She was determined to earn money and wouldn't waste any day.

The club building had about five or six floors, each with seven or eight gambling dens. Students who lived in the dormitories would often gamble late into the night.

Taking advantage of the lack of people around, Kiyohei conjured a large bag of relaxing R-rated potato chips and strolled while munching. He had originally planned to conjure them during the movie, but Kurume had been sticking close, making it difficult to find an opportunity.

However, the cinema provided unlimited free popcorn, which was delicious enough to make up for it.

He visited the Shogi Club, Supernatural Research Club, Anime Research Club, Traditional Culture Research Club... Kiyohei walked through these clubs like a regular high school student. The content of these clubs was mostly the same – they were all gambling dens.

Kiyohei didn't participate in any of the gambling. He merely observed from the sidelines as gamblers wailed in despair. It was clear that cheating was rampant in this school. Out of ten gambling dens he passed, seven were cheating. Although he didn't scrutinize the methods, their low win rates indicated something was wrong. Ten bets, nine losses; there was no need to guess that there was a problem.

These low-win-rate gambling dens naturally had low foot traffic. For the popular ones, even if cheating was involved, it wouldn't be as obvious. They'd at least employ a fair 4:6 ratio to give gamblers a sense of winning.

Kiyohei recalled that operating these gambling dens required paying a facility fee to the Student Council. Given the blatant cheating, even if the win rate was around 90%, could the owners of these gambling dens afford the facility fee?

Especially a gambling den named Traditional Culture Research Club, where not a single gambler was present. As Kiyohei entered this gambling den, he saw that there wasn't a single customer. Subconsciously wanting to leave, he was grabbed by a girl wearing a kimono who insisted that he gamble a round before leaving.

This girl kept demanding, mentioning that her club president was a member of the Student Council. If he refused to gamble with her, she threatened to punish him as "livestock."

Kiyohei wasn't sure if the girl was just trash-talking or if the Student Council was truly this authoritarian. Helplessly, he left behind 10,000 yen and made a swift escape.

If you want to attract gamblers, why resort to such obvious cheating? What's the point of this aggressive buying and selling?
