The hatred you two seem to have for Don is comical. Sorry to report that Don Draper is one of three greatest characters in the history of television alongside Tony Soprano and Walter White

BobVee

That’s crazy that it’s just in the wrong order, I checked it on my Netflix as well and it’s got them flipped.

Patrick

The way that the show does (and doesn't) use Don's secret is really interesting. The first season has that really classic mystery box design, and it gives you the *feeling* that there is a big revelation coming about Don. And there is, but we also get that the famous "Mr Campbell, who cares" anti-climax. They are ringing a similar bell here. Betty discovers this explosive secret, spends all day waiting to confront Don... and then puts it back in the drawer when he doesn't come home. It's kind of similar to the secret itself: Yes, what Don (err, Dick) has done is illegal. He is an army deserter and he stole Donald Draper's identity. But also, it's kind of a victimless crime? I guess Anna is a victim, but she's also become his closest confidant and obviously wouldn't dream of pursuing charges against him now. The actual mechanics of what he did are kind of... nothing? He didn't steal Don's old job or his money. He divorced his wife and even bought her a house as compensation. He didn't really assume Donald Draper's life in any meaningful way. He just took the name and walked away from his own life. The real "secret" is the lie. His name isn't his name. He isn't who he says he is. And that isn't illegal, exactly. If he were using a different, totally unencumbered name professionally -- hey, "Donald Draper" just *sounds* better, right? -- and Betty knew about it, there would be nothing wrong with that. But by not telling Betty, by spending years building a life with her on false pretences, the whole "secret" has grown into somethign explosive, and become emblematic of his other lies and sneaking around on her. We saw how Bert Cooper reacted to this non-secret secret, but he's a ruthless pragmatist who (evidently) only saw the revelation as leverage over Don. Betty... probably isn't going to see it the same way.

I just want to reiterate: MAKE SURE that the next episode you watch is the right one! It should begin with Betty wearing a coat in her bedroom. If it's something else, ABORT!

Taya

She's too much of a minor character to make it into the top 5, but among the minor characters she is definitely one of the best

Taya

It MIGHT be in the wrong order. The next episode should be The Gypsy and The Hobo.

Taya

I hate it when Don and Roger aren’t getting along, they are such a great duo otherwise.

Patrick

Hey guys just to flag the next episode on Netflix is in the wrong order number 12 should be number 11

James

These next three episodes are to me where the golden age of the show begins. And it just keeps going for several seasons.

Sebastian

I don't think peggy is intentionally starting weak and building up to it. I've always read it as her being so genuinely talented she CAN improv her way into something brilliant right there in the room.

Sebastian

Remember you are not allowed to say the name of the next episode anymore!!

"I think the next three episodes are going to be insane" From Kill Bill: Vol. 2: "Baby... you ain't kiddin'."

Paul realizing there's levels to this shit as Peggy feigns off the dome my god Peggy intentionally began by giving middling pitches. She already had heat cooked up after hearing the Chinese saying the first time. Then magnificently maneuvering the pocket inspiration to show Paul how talented she is and how cut-throat she can be if he really wants to go pitch for pitch bar for bar

on crip ...

31 out of 58 of the UK's Prime Ministers went to Oxford University, and 13 of those studied at Christ Church (a college within Oxford). The UK is still incredibly insular and elitist in 2025, I can't even imagine how bad it was in 1930, 1940 etc. There's a running "joke" that studying PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics course) at Oxford is the gateway to power, being PM or working in government due to connections etc. The UK has its own unique forms of racism but it's genuinely hard to explain how bad classism is - some posh UK people will discriminate against other white people who have a working-class accent, who were born in the north of the country etc. Let alone Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, which are all part of the UK but considered secondary (and they all have their own internal class issues). To quote Atlanta: "I thought racism wasn't really a thing here [in the UK]. I thought it was more about class." "Racism and capitalism, hard to separate, innit. [...] I feel like anywhere you can buy a can of coke, some type of racism's going down there."

Kara

It's a smaller part of the episode, but here we see the confirmation for what had been implied earlier about Lane Pryce's social position and background in England. "I've been here 10 months and no one's ever asked me where I went to school." 'Where you went to school' is not precisely UNIQUE to the UK, but it has a lot of cultural baggage that doesn't translate to the USA. It's "What class did you grow up in?" and "How rich were your parents?", and also (but much less) "what kind of education did you receive?" and more besides. Since this is a question he's glad to avoid we know Lane didn't go to the best school, which means he wasn't rich or well-born, which explains why he's so willing to let his bosses kick him around despite apparently being very good at his job. If he was American he could fight back (a little) by moving to a different firm if he's unhappy with how he's treated, but in England he's supposed to just take it because of the class roles and expectations. The classism he experiences in the UK is nowhere near as virulent as the USA racism that we heard about in the last episode, but it's nonetheless real and harmful. To Lane, living in the USA is like moving to the Promised Land.

Roger is amazing...they want to say he's the fav, do it. DO IT.

(i sent you a DM, sorry if you've seen it!) Paul: I tried everything, I even talked to Achilles. Peggy: [concerned] How do you... talk to Achilles? It's nice to see Paul finally realize that Peggy isn't just "don's girl", she's talented in a way he never will be. Paul drunkenly masturbating to jazz music, is there a better metaphor? I love that both Peggy and Don know Paul isn't lying, he really believes he forgot to write down a good idea. Another link between Peggy and Don. Betty and Don both thinking their lovers cold called the house is so funny. Other shows would have the explosive discovery in the S3 finale, like the girls predicted. Mad Men just throws it out in ep 10 so we can stew on it / deal with whatever consequences for 3 whole episodes. Its choices like that which make the show never feel formulaic to me. Every choice has purpose, everything in its right place. Bonus thoughts: Roger is in don-hater mode but still does a really charming, believable speech.... he is good for one thing at least. I like the Lane side story, maybe its just the actor Jared Harris but I buy into whatever they're selling. I like that it's gotten colder, everyone is wearing coats now, its not the long warm summer of earlier eps.

Kara

i forgot how good this episode was.. damn

T0ast

1. Don, 2. Peggy, 3. Joan is my top for life

Bernardo

I love Roger like yeah he’s scummy but his actor plays him with such charisma and humor I can’t hate him

Jude G

The next episode should be titled The Gypsy and The Hobo and the first scene is Betty in her bedroom.

Taya

Next episode on Netflix is the one in the wrong order. I'm sure many people will point this out in these comments.

Jay Craig

Totally agree with you about Paul & Harry. Well, at least Paul can be kind of endearing/funny with his pretentiousness, at least it's a character trait that stands out. Harry is just... so unlikable by default, if you even notice he's there. He's not funny or endearing or particularly talented. He's just... there. And he's ALWAYS grumpy and complaining about something or other, but not even in an amusing way like with Pete, because he has negative personality and charisma.

Taya

nah roger is #1 he steals every scene lol dont like betty at all tho

Josip

For beginning rankings where does Trudy fit in?
