It is possible to enjoy a character while recognizing that they are far from perfect. And, yeah, it's kind of gross how some guys are so hung up on horniness that they don't see predatory behavior for what it is. As if male teenagers are somehow not capable of being sexually abused, which is just insane to me. Which is why I appreciate Himeno phrasing it as "taking advantage" of Denji, rather than seducing him.

But after coming back to it, I appreciate how paradoxically beautiful the scene is. There are many shows which jackhammer tragedy into you with sudden deaths and it feels so contrived, but this felt so raw. And just reinforced how cruel and unfair this world is, without feeling edgy. This show is a real treasure.

I found fascinating that, despite all of makima's manipulation, she consistently gives Denji good advice. CSM makes a really good job of portraying exactly why Denji loves her so much. She showed him kindness and maturity. She is, from his perspective, a considerate and reliable female authority figure, which means a lot to a boy that never had motherly love. She would have been much easier to write if she just took advantage of his sexual desires, but it is much deeper than that.

I remember making the mistake of watching it on the train on the way back home from uni and unsuccesfully trying to hold back tears lol. The direction, the shift in tone, the high stakes!!! Himeno!! Himeno was is a really conflicting character to me because even though I have absolutely zero tolerance for inappropriate behavior towards minors and I truly think her actions when it comes to Denji are revolting, there’s also a part of me that recognizes her as a deeply broken individual who has probably developed self-destructive and irresponsible behaviors due to her traumas. Obviously this does NOT excuse her actions but I’m constantly reminded that she’s one of the many traumatized people in this story living under hellish situations. She makes me wonder: do I really like her? Am I allowed to like her? I’d like to know how other people feel about her. On twt she’s either loved or literally the worst person ever, there’s no in between. (By the way, after watching the reactions to episode 7, I decided to check out some group reactions from men, and I swear a couple of guys were hyping those inappropriate scenes with Denji and saying he was living every 16yo boy’s dream by getting attention from two adult women. At first I was irritated and thought they were pigs lol but then it just made me sad that predatory behavior from women is so overlooked by men, just because sex and female attention is given so much importance. As a woman, that’s something I really struggle to understand.)

I think you guys would really like the characters there, it probably won't change your life like frieren or Vinland saga but there's a lot of fun to be had with it! also like the community experience of like watching/reading JJK is like no other in my opinion so it would be cool if you guys were in on that when season 3 comes out

Also, I personally love all the "over explanations and silly rules". So fun to me. Though, I can empathize with you about them getting stuck on only shounen shows and no other genres of shows ever being selected.

2025-09-07 18:00:59 +0000 UTCA good way to think about it is to consider the trope "making a deal with devils" and to realize that many of the powers in this show are based on making deals (Denji with Pochita, Aki and the Fox Devil). The idea of making deals with demons isn't that common.

I know some people are pushing for it but I would rather them watch any other anime..hopefully something different like Nana or any other genre besides shounen for a change of peace lol.

This makes me a little worried that the movie will have an extremely fast pace, with twists and action following one after another.

In my highschool, they used to create public lists ranking girls asses. Not only it was dehumanizing, it made us girls see each other as competition, seeing ourselves as merely bodies to attract the male students, and eventually develop a very unhealthy relationship with food and sports. Provocative non consensual touching was also pretty normalised under the disguise of being playful and, like denji, we grew up thinking that that kind of behavior was positive because it meant we were valuable, another form of connection, and made us feel "good".... until it doesnt.

I just love how real this world is. Everything is grouned but has every shonen element possible, this is my fav show and story and character fujimoto crafted a 10 outta 10

2025-09-07 02:54:16 +0000 UTCLoved the long discussion at the end, of course Himeno was a big topic since this episode brings the conslusion of what I think is one of the best characters of the show. Also makima, since she gets shot and killed out of nowhere, in the same scene where for the first time you feel some empathy for her, with two dialogues that I find very interesting about the character : 1.Her talking about how she enjoyed the drinks something you highlighted 2.How she says "I hate the meetings with the tokyo bigwigs. They're so intimidating" the idea of Makima finding people "intimidating" is crazy And finally last topic was kinda a lot about how the world of chainsaw man works, what I think is a very interesting topic, even more when you are still finding out lots of things at the start of the show. The worldbuilding of the chainsaw man is phenomenal, with a mix of a realistic, really grounded and dark tone combined with some goofy characters/scenes. I think it's interesting because the director of season 1 (nakayama) focused more the first part when adapting the manga to make the adaptation have this "realistic" tone and in comparison it looks like the director of the movie that comes out next month (yoshihara) focused more on the second part with the design of the characters being more colorful and more simplistic like in the manga and having a staging more extravagant. You can see the difference in the adaptations of the extra chapters that came out a the end of the 2 recap movies that came up on crunchyroll (just look at the last 5-6min)

She's the blood demon and the blood for her weapons comes out of her wrists. I think you can put those pieces together.

2025-09-07 02:34:01 +0000 UTCThis might be a big ask, but I highly recommend that for episode 9, you guys watch the Chainsawman Movie Compilation part 2 from 24:30 - 41:07. The end is obvious, so you wouldn't need to keep track of the time. I find that the tone is wonderfully done and that the added & revised scenes that aren't in episode 9 add to the experience quite a bit. If you watch episode 9 on its own however, that's still great. I loved the reaction, have a good one.

2025-09-07 02:18:23 +0000 UTCThis episode/these chapters cemented this series as one of my favorites when I first read them. I love how they fulfill the promises of earlier episodes. The very first thing Aki says to Denji is that he needs to quit because everyone who takes this job ends up dead, at the restaurant the other verterans were almost speaking casually about one of their rookies dying because it's so common, the first thing we learn about Himeno is that her first 7 partners all died. And now it's made obvious that all that wasn't all window dressing to artificially raise the stakes, they were warnings lmao. Most people who were sitting at that table last episode are now dead or presumed dead, just like that. And this fight is a fantastic example of "Chainsaw Pacing" lol, I love how when a fight begins everyone immediately goes all out and uses their most powerful attacks without much hesitation or taking any time to explain what they're doing. Like how Aki pulled out his (nail) sword that takes years off his life which was treated as a big deal two episodes ago with no fanfare or announcement, bro just realized he had a job to do if he wanted anyone to live.
