Chainsaw Man 1x02 Reaction

Chainsaw Man 1x02 Reaction

Honestly this was a great pick for one of the more "action anime" style shows for them to watch. It's got a lot better story and characters than a lot of the others. i think ya'll are really going to enjoy this.

Kolton Nay

I just watched the reactions to the first two episodes and I have a few things to say haha, apologies for the long comment!
First of all, I was surprised by the comments you mentioned (I only read a few myself), because it seems like a lot of people are interpreting the characters’ actions and your potential take on them on a very superficial level. I was honestly shocked that some people were worried about whether Denji’s behavior might be a turn-off for you. Yes, he is a horny teen, but he’s also a kid in a situation of extreme vulnerability. He literally has no idea what a normal life looks like, or what healthy relationships are. Every relationship he’s had so far has been transactional and abusive. Anyone should be able to pick up on that after watching the first episode and see his actions through that lens :( that’s why I’m not at all worried about how you’ll react to this show going forward, you guys are smart and perceptive and it’s obvious that you’ll recognize the dynamics at play. I have no doubt you’re going to like the show or at the very least, that it’ll spark a lot of interesting conversations between you two. On another note, I think the comments about the quality of this part of the story are unnecessary. It’s world building. Some people will find it interesting, others won’t. I wish people would let you guys form your own opinions instead of giving “warnings” Lastly, I f-cking love Aki!!!!!!!!!! Bye

CC

ngl, I feel like some people were insulting their intelligence with those comments

CC

I AM SO FCKIN BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CC

I love how they are already calling Denji "my boy" and understanding how desperate for affection he is

Vitor

Can we have NGE reactions as well in the future? 🥺🥺🥺

Sazid Rahman

Wow! They are smart enough to understand the nuances of some vulgar rhetorics used in a good story. Who knew! Can we please stop gatekeeping Neon Genesis Evangelion from them and bring it on their radar? Please!

Sazid Rahman

This show is pretty great but it flies by

In general, Fujimoto has a great personality. His former editor, Yukinobu Tatsu, had been trying to write his own manga stories for a long time, but dozens of them were rejected by magazines, which almost made him give up. Fujimoto is said to have advised him to write a story that did not appeal to a broad audience, but simply whatever came to mind and gave him joy. He then wrote Dandadan, one of the most popular modern manga, which also received a very successful anime adaptation from the animation studio Science Saru. The story breaks with all conventions and is incredibly unique.

I am not a chainsawman fan. But I am a fujimoto fan. I seriously consider him to be once in a generation mangaka. Fujimoto mostly started to write Chainsawman because he needed to pay bills. In one interviews he shared that this was also time when he started to oil paint with friends, which tends to get expensive really fast. Chainsawman's breakthrough in popularity helped fujimoto to cover his bills. But chainsawman is not THE story he wanted to tell the world. I would suggest you girls to also check out his one shot mangas "goodbye eri" and "look back". Look back semi autobiographical in nature, and is directly related to fujimoto's own life about creating manga and experiencing grief. Look back has been adapted into a movie btw. Being mangaka is an extremely lonely job. There is time when all a young author wishes to do is to become one, but once you're there, you're basically managing everything by yourself, storyboarding, art, layout, publishing etc. Chainsawman part 1 was on weekly schedule, and it consumed fujimoto entirely. He took break after completing part 1. And during this "break" he wrote look back and goodbye eri. Part 2 of Chainsawman is on biweekly schedule which allows him a bit more flexibility. Luckily Fujimoto has had help of several talented artists who have been his assistants. Yuji Kaku-(creator of hell's paradise), Tatsuya endo (creator of spy x family), Yukinobu Tatsu (creator of dandadan). These are extremely popular works, that's why I made the statement that Fujimoto is once in a generation mangaka. Everyone of his assistants has gone to create popular works.

BTW ARE YOU GIRLS GOING TO REACT TO THE SUMMER HIKARU DIED ?? im always out of loop so idk if yall are planning to or if we'd have to wait for a poll first

sleepymiffi

the pain of having to wait another week for the next chainsaw man drop... i’d insert an extremily sad gif that’d make you empathise if it were possible

sleepymiffi

Mid twenties was always the guess of the fans. She is in a leading position in the goverment organisation. There can't be a 17 year old. 😂 Almost all Devil Hunters are between 19 and 30 years old. Denji is 16 years old and only allowed there because of his power.

Robert Dirk H.

The culprit is the "devil of the comment sections"

refo44

Makima is not 17 lol. I mean we don't know her exact age but she's definetely an adult and i personnaly always thought she was older than Aki ( who is 20-22) so around 25-29.

petitcorbeau

I was surprised seeing all the comments about the sexually explicit stuff when people were saying why LM wouldnt like this show. CSM is an essay on consent and power imbalance in relationships, and the future arcs in the manga cement that. I’m a fan of the show, but imo there’s a different reason why I wouldn’t have voted for it on this reaction channel.

My Toasty Toast

In my opinion, some people are overreacting to the sexual content in Chainsaw Man. The two got through Hisoka in Hunter x Hunter. No matter how much Makima manipulates Denji, it can't be worse than Hisoka 😀 Fujimoto also attempts to address the issue of consent through Makima's manipulation and Denji's very primitive sexual goals as a teenager. Unfortunately, grooming of boys by women is still rarely taken seriously.

Robert Dirk H.

I think you should watch episodes 3 and 4 together if you haven't watched episode 3 yet :D

Robert Dirk H.

Also best boy Aki is here 🧎‍♂️‍➡️🧎‍♂️‍➡️🧎‍♂️‍➡️

Milen Karabadzhakov

After the first episode's reaction I rewatched the season again and I teared up surprisingly often. I think I got hit by the Empathy devil (you two) lol.

Milen Karabadzhakov

Literally, it feels so weird seeing people squirm at any sex exploration in anime when people mentioned CSM and NGE in the comments when you’ve got the Sopranos and such. Feels dismissive of the genre as a whole

bondbond53

The greatest pair of smart anime characters! :p

Paqi

The folks that think this show has too much "fan service" or is "too sexualized" are, frankly, immature, and don't appreciate depth. I haven't read the manga, so I don't know where things go past the first season, but everything depicted in the first season is 100% grounded in exposition and character development. And when things cross a line, the show straight up acknowledges that. It's part of the story, and makes sense within the context it occurs in.

Paqi

The way some comments have been talking about whether LM would like/watch/be able to discuss some of the things she show does feels especially weird after they just got through The Sopranos. Which is FULL of sex/nudity/exploitation and etc. I think it can be true that there's merit to a discussion of how a lot of anime handles these things, but sometimes it also feels like people put more weight on portrayal of things like that in anime than in live action. CSM also, imo, does a lot better than other shows in that it is actually *discussing* sex and intimacy with its themes, vs other ones that just have it there for the sake of pure titilation or to attract viewers.

cosmotron

Tatsuki Fujimoto is know for including insane things or even really awful things, for exemple in his first manga "fire punch" he portrayed cannibalism, pedophilia, slavery... but he never glorifies it and it serves the narrative. And on top of that he isn't scared of portraying gay or trans people (something pretty rare in japan and even more in shonen manga) especially trans people since he wrote a whole short story just about transsexuality and even had a major plotline for a character in "fire punch" being that they are trans

Beam

yes chainsaw saturday !!! I was kinda scared because of people reaction to csm winning saying that you will not like the show for certain reason but i don't know why I doubt it, it is clear you girls understand what Tatsuki Fujimoto (the very skilled writter of the manga) wanted to portray. I'm sure you girls will love it

Beam

I love Denji posing in the classic anime protagonist stance as he proclaims his goal is to touch boobs

bondbond53

In another universe, Bocchi the Rock won and that Milena is having a brainwave frequency with this Milena in the discussion

My Toasty Toast

*Spoilers below beware* . . . . . . Ken I’m one of the people who voted against CSM. I actually really like the story and show - I can’t speak for everyone but I don’t think most people were against the show because a suppressed 17 year old is horny. Putting aside the Himeno stuff, in my opinion why I voted against this for LM is that Chainsaw Man shares the JJK problem where it kills off too many of its characters for shock factor or when there was more juicy storytelling potential. I’m not saying that LM wouldn’t like CSM, I’m saying that I think of the reactor’s tastes here when I vote and there were shows on the poll that were much more suited to what they look for in a story.

My Toasty Toast

That’s why you were being warned due to the sexual nature of the show but you’re mature girls and understand that’s just what a teenage boy is focused on. People need to chill you girls can handle it.

Ken Drummer

Power and Denji’s relationship is my favorite part of this story, i love them 🥺😭

Daniel Molina

I'd make the argument that "explicit" is fairly subjective, so while I personally agree with your take, I don't think it's wrong if others feel that the content in CSM is explicit.

Merfhew

Wtf how? Personally I love Power. I agree with you on the first part tho.

Dimitron

People way overblow the "explicit" stuff. It's quite ridiculous. It's really not that bad lol. Especially this season/at the start. I hate commenters who treat reactors like toddlers. They're adults. They can handle it.

Hollow

Well… see.. idk.. ahh is hard not to address those fanservice allegations without spoiling anything but I can see why people would complain about some fanservice in this show. Sadly without spoiling anything is a bit hard to address those things lol

Jack SV

I feel moving forward you shouldn’t read too much the comments. People can be split about how you girls might or not like this anime but I feel you girls should get to that conclusion on your own. Ahhh hot take but Power is my least favorite character in this anime lol she is just an annoying character to me. Also good observations regarding Makima.. ;) I will just leave it at that lol

Jack SV

What type of character do you like? Lola: I like the Kurapika type.

Jack Hoff

Oh they're gonna love this show. They (unsurprisingly) fully get Denji as a character and understand that him being starved for attention is a huge part of why he is the way he is. Not to mention being a teenager.

Sverrir_Thor

I've only seen the anime but so far I agree with the notion that the people talking about "fanservice" or the like in some negative way are being very insulting to the author and the girls here because so far at least its not that simple. I remember people talking like this during the Hunter x Hunter poll as well and it is very strange to me how they arrive at these conclusions.

Daiga54

20 is the legal smoking age in Japan so we know he's at least 20

hman70

The thing about people warning you two about the more "explicit" parts of the show is that Chainsaw man gets really heavily criticized for those aspects of it by people who don't really take the context of Denji's character into account. This led to a lot of fans of the series getting pretty defensive about the show and manga, making them feel the need "warn" people about these parts of the story. But you both get what Fujimoto, the writer, is going for with the sexual themes of the show so there really isn't any need to be overly worried about what people said.

JJ

Most character's age's are never stated, we can guess from context clues that Aki is 20-22 and that Makima is likely older than him. I'd say 25 like Lola said is probably the younger end of the estimate. I'd probably describe her as mid-to-late 20s, but I wouldn't call someone crazy for calling her early 30s.

hman70

Yes, I think you hit the nail right on the head. Someone I knew asked before watching if the anime was going to be "horny", as a reader of the manga I said no, and while watching they kept messaging me going "how is [scene] not horny?", and I don't really know how to respond to that. If you think Denji ideating about touching a boob is supposed to be "horny", we're using a different definition of the word. Genitalia isn't inherently titillating, otherwise Denji kicking Aki in the nuts would also be "horny", context matters. That said I do think it's a slight exaggeration to say it's NEVER titillating, though I also find some people's blanket admonishment of all titillating content to end up being more harmful than helpful.

Nina

you guys already understand what “explicit things” mean in the context in the show so there was no reason for the comments (me included) to worry

tanasia

Concerning their ages, the manga only ever reveals Denji’s; however ppl speculate Makima being the oldest of the core in her late 20s, power is a fiend so unknown, Aki is 3 years Denji’s senior at Public Safety which means either 3 years older than Denji or he just started at Public Safety 3 years ago and we have no idea what his age is; but he is speculated to be in his young 20s

TDawg

Yeah I'm not surprised your comment section was a mess. The reality is that the show depicts some topics that are rough, and even sometimes shows the character kinda being ok with it, and often people mistake that for the author or the media itself being for it. Judging your past reactions (long time fan) you'll understand the nuance.

Z3P

Loving this, especially the after discussion. You're asking smart questions about the worldbuilding! And after how you guys have reacted to a lot of the characters there are certain episodes I *cannot wait* for you to get to now. This is going to be a fun season!

hman70

Okay, they didn’t write off Denji because of the boob thing. First hurdle cleared lol.

SwampFox95

I think some of the discussion around the show mistakes depicting difficult topics for endorsing them. I don’t think anything in the show or manga could be considered titillating.

Patrick

On the comments about the explicit stuff (not going to spoil or hint at anything): You'll know it when you see it. I personally believe that people who are concerned about it didn't really grasp the complexities of it or never watched the anime and judged from clips. Obviously judge for yourself, I'll go into more detail once we get there.

Nina

24:05 OH poor Aki next episode XD

Jonathan Wang

"Boji" is so LM core XD

Jonathan Wang

yes every episode has a different ending!

tanasia

Makima is old enough to be in a high ranking government position. She's certainly grooming him. I experienced very similar treatment compared to Denji, and it's portrayed very well.

Pastel

Yall are going to love next episode for sure.

Nina

lets gooooo

tanasia

lets freaking gooo

Happy Chainsaw Saturday to all those who celebrate :D
