It is really funny how he's obsessed with Ayn Rand

Nazım Metin

I love how the show casually kills off the key to the foundational mystery of the show in the opening scene and then proceeds with the rest of the episode like it didn't happen.

Julien

haven't even finished s1 yet 💀 its gonna be a goood year

SPOILER WARNING . . . . . . . . . Your comment heavily flirts with spoilers. A few of the key terms you use simply aren't remotely applicable yet: protégé?? In what world? This is episode 11 of season 1. Peggy is a secretary who just got her second copywriting assignment. At best, this is an experiment. Your reading is entirely premature and spoilery. As is your description of what Pete may be feeling. Again, we are not there at all. Let's try not to get ahead of ourselves. We are all here paying to get unspoiled reactions.

Julien

Man, that reaction to the first scene was worth the wait haha

I really struggled to take the complaints about glorification seriously because of stuff like this, [later stuff] and the fact they KNOW cigarettes are bad and addictive and are fighting to try to slow down regulation like "warning labels on the package" (that we know succeeds). a core plot is the characters trying to make cancer-causing smoking cool + glorious! haha I basically agree but in a small peggy defence, she's like 20yo and only just learning a world exists outside of the little Brooklyn catholic community she grew up in. it's like she just learned a cool secret and is desperate to tell everyone so they can get in on the cool secret too.

I can confirm that the majority of writers (9 out of 12) of Mad Men were women, as confirmed by show's creator Matthew Weiner. Mad Men used a writers room setup, so everyone is in a room together discussing the season and episodes, contributing to everything. Then one credited writer pulls it together into a script, so even episodes with male credited writer will have the (majority) women writers in the room contributing ideas, dialog, themes, plot etc. That's why diverse rooms are important btw, having even 1 person in a room can shape every single episode. "I used to think you couldn't put a value on a human life, but I never asked Bert Cooper did I?" This ep is the second time Bert Cooper has brought up Ayn Rand. Ayn Rand was a (woman) author, she wrote Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead and is the creator of "Objectivism", a political philosophy that is like libertarianism on steroids. Ayn Rand's Objectivism says that selfishness is the highest moral purpose, that strong individuals should do anything to make themselves happy within capitalist systems and 'reason' is the only thing that matters, not faith, not cooperation or collectivism (no god, no kings, only man). Her work inspired settings like Bioshock (Andrew Ryan = Ayn Rand etc). Bert Cooper loves Ayn Rand and her flavor of completely untethered free market capitalism. He sees Don like one of her characters, a strong handsome smart powerful (white) man who selfishly climbs the capitalism system. Basically, Bert Cooper is like the mega end boss of Capitalism, and that benefits Don here as Bert happily makes him partner to benefit the business by reassuring clients that Don isnt going anywhere like Roger. "Carlton would break my arm" worth noting that we while we see Don be a terrible husband, we've never seen him be physically abusive to Betty or the kids at all so far. This shouldn't be surprising but sadly is for the setting, where many men viewed wives and children as property they could punish or simply abuse because they were angry or felt like it, with very little recourse for victims 😔 I also love the interactions with Don and Peggy these episodes! Don is a strange fish. We see him cheat with multiple women but he never mocks women like Peggy in the office. He treats Peggy (almost) "like a man", giving her straight up advice. He's almost chivalrous, which makes it almost surprising when he fucks Rachel or Midge (artist) then goes home to Betty. Definitely fascinating though, you really wanna know more.

Roger Sterling's SECOND heart attack after a lunch of drinking and eating is yet another blow against people claiming that this show endorses the hedonism we see in the office. I find Peggy's date in this episode to be painful to see. Because there is nothing wrong with ambition or pride or a desire to change yourself or your station. But none of those things require feeling shame or condescension or contempt for where you came from. And it's fine that Peggy wants more, but she doesn't need to look down her nose at people who don't. And she doesn't need to look down at HERSELF. Don's definitely Peggy's mentor, but don't overlook that Freddy Rumson is the one who first suggested bringing Peggy back into the room. He saw her potential from the beginning.

They should 100% do this. The music choices in the credits are not incidental!!

Mike

Might be worth turning off auto-play on Netflix, so the ending songs aren’t always cutting off into the next episodes intro

Love the added nuance to Pete & Peggy's relationship here. All of a sudden, Pete realizes that Peggy isn't just the new girl at the office. Now Don is kind of taking her under his wing -- a role that he might have thought was his, in his own self-centred Pete way, after his conversation with Roger at the start of the season. I think that recontextualizes the flashes of resentment that Pete's been showing towards Peggy all season. I don't know if he even understands the cause-and-effect at play, but Peggy's run of success at the office has basically blown up the idea of her (and the power dynamics between them) that he fell for. "Uh, Freddy's wife... does not look like Mitch's." Thanks Harry. (So, so excited for these next two episodes.)

Mike

but but but he said "good job pegs" 🥺 (yeah he's a prick, same as the rest of the young guys)

Kara

I guess I never realized how harsh Ken Cosgrove is in season one.

Dan Draper is my fav character in Mad Man (/s ❤️❤️)

Dinner time!! I watched the full reaction and wanted to say that I absolutely love the dynamic between Don and Peggy, together and individually they are my two favorite characters on the show. I'm glad you guys have already seen the potential in their relationship!!

That death was so incredibly sad especially considering how happy he was a few episodes ago when he thought Don was visiting him to rekindle some kind of brotherhood.
