I have been following your youtube channel for years and Mad Men surely was one of those shows I hoped you would watch. It's one of my absolute favorites, there is so much to say about it. And I agree, you can watch this masterpiece for hours just in awe. I am so happy that you like it. Wouldn't have thought anything else. There are some other great period dramas out there, who knows, maybe they end up here as well.

I love Andor and would be super excited to see a reaction to it, but if another short show is needed to put in a poll, might I suggest Adolescence? It's just four episodes and it would generate fascinating discussions, I believe. (I'd still vote for Andor, though.)

They shifted the schedule to account for the international move and the Cowboy Bebop movie which was late. The next Mad Men reaction isn't even late yet. It should be Mad Men > Monster > Mad Men > Monster, Thurs thru Sun.

I think the casting of the men is intentional. That's 2 older guys we've seen Joan go for. Her best friend just professed her love to her, so she takes her out to a bar, finds the first 2 random guys she can to pay for drinks/food, gets drunk, brings them home and has sex with them. idk if it's conscious or subconscious, but it's a desire to remind Carol that Joan is heterosexual (and maybe Carol is too). Of the two men she also leaves the "better" one for Carol. on a meta level it reinforces what Burt says later about not giving "youth to age".

No offence to the guys Joan and friend brought home
But I think they were cast a little too
old.
I knew you would love madmen for the characters, it doesn’t have the potential violence of a breaking bad, wire or sopranos but I think that makes it refreshing. There is the same amount of drama but it doesn’t hinge on the threat of death.

1. The lighting looks great, actually!
2. Someone may have already mentioned this, but in this context, "followed" is metaphorical. She means that she became friends with Joan because she was attracted to her, then later when Joan went to Manhattan, so she went too, as a roommate. There's still an implication there that she is pining for Joan, of course, generally one "follows" their partner, not a friend from college. But it's not literal stalking :D

Bit off topic but I rewatched The Apartment last night. It’s perfect and the MM influence is obvious but there’s a scene where Jack Lemmon is called Little Lord Fauntleroy and it hit me, that’s what Kendall is referencing and what Chris is calling Jackie Jr lol. Im guessing I was supposed to know that already. Oops

Hope you both enjoy Spain! Glad you're enjoying the show too. I think Don sees Rachel as a kindred spirit rather than her literally knowing everything about him. They've talked about being outsiders, losing their mothers, her father has also struggled to make a living. They get along on a deeper level and he feels like he can share things he can't with Betty.
There's a good exchange between Don and Abe Menken in their meeting, where Don is joking about him telling his kids how hard it used to be, and Abe replies 'yes it was hard, everyone seems to want to forget that'. Don sees the new beginning for the store as aspirational, but Abe is not ready to radically alter things so quickly. Rachel was similarly wary when they first proposed it to her.
One other things is Don talking about seeing himself in Nixon. He may have a similar background to Nixon, but his current lifestyle is a lot more like Kennedy. Good looking, charismatic, model wife and family but a known philanderer.

I would say the decline didn't start until the 70s/80s with neoliberalism and ending of New Deal democracy. 1960s had civil rights movement and The Great Society was still on the table.

You may not know a lot about America in 1960, but as an American looking back, 1960 has some very close similar society themes to today. The 60s were the start of the decline from the peak of the 50s America, and people like the characters could sense it, but didn't quite know what to do.

It's almost funny how Don outright *creates* that moment with Rachel. Roger's experience spooks him, and he wants to run to someone who knows and loves him... but that person doesn't exist. He tells Rachel that she knows everything about him, but she doesn't, not until he tells her about his parents *after* they have sex. And even then he doesn't tell her everything. He wants Rachel to want him (and she does), but he orchestrates the events so that he seduces her first and won't consummate the encounter until she *says* that she wants it.
The whole thing is so artificial, even if it's underpinned by real honest emotions and confessions.

Don: "my best friend and boss had a heart attack"
Betty: "wow rip to a real one, btw did you know Gloria cooks pot roast with KETCHUP?"
CRAZY good episode, sooo much happened lmao. I guess I'll focus on the thing I care about most: gay yearning for christina hendricks. Just to be clear, Carol said she saw Joan in college, they became friends in college, then later Joan moved to NYC and Carol followed her yeah. compulsive heterosexuality (comp het) is powerful in 2025, imagine how much worse it was in 1960. honestly being a lesbian then, if you got lucky you could have a "lavender marriage" with a gay man who understood the assignment. otherwise you're either a lonely spinster people whisper about, or allowing rando men to do whatever they want. it's nice to have some minor woman queer rep alongside Sal, even in such circumstances. it makes me cry for all the women - not just gay women - who just said "yes" as the path of least resistance, because its what you're "supposed to want", because it's easier than making a scene. this still happens now. your comments about class are wholly appropriate - it was a lot easier to be gay in the village than it was to hold down a job in manhattan. there's a lot of great resources, books, youtube vids if your interested, just search "queer history 20th century US" etc.
It's a small detail but when Roger is in hospital he says "I did everything the doctors said, I ate the butter, I drank the cream" - back then the latest dietary news was that fats were good and you were supposed to eat as much fats as possible. So here's Roger Sterling drinking half a bottle of vodka minimum a day, pounding oysters with rich butter sauces, inhaling glasses of creamy milk prescribed by his Doctor + smoking cigarettes nonstop, who is then shocked when he suddenly has a heart attack lol. just a funny "history is weird" meme.
One of the things I love about Mad Men is sometimes it feels so relatable + contemporary and other times it feels like watching an alien civilization on a different planet. you think of history as being specific groups of people, "the 1800s", "the 60s" etc but every moment in history is a cross-section slice of human culture just like 2025: where we have boomers and gen x and millennials and gen z and gen alpha all mixing with conflicting beliefs and classes and cultures. its like that in 1960 - you have people who lived through the gilded age, mixing with people who will still be alive today. Sally Draper would be 71 if she lives until 2025.
I'll sound like a broken record but it legit warms my heart how much you love the show at this point lol. I always suspected this would be the case but you never know for sure (rip Diegesis Mr Robot reactions 😭). to see you be INTO the show this much honestly makes my week every time the reaction drops 💖💖💖

Huge part of Mad Men and Joan's agency is her weaponizing the hand she was given. Same goes for every other female character acting outside of the status quo. Pretty easy for us to judge in retrospect fifty years later. I think she should get all the credit. Why can't she be just as nasty as the men when she has to deal with a million roadblocks to get where she is now and exponential consequences that they would never have to face? That's the genius of Mad Men to me.

The movie "The Apartment" that Joan references is a classic film regarded as one of the best films ever made. It's about a man working at a company who loans out his apartment to higher-ranking men at his company to use for their affairs so they won't be caught. That's why it resonates so much with Joan when Roger talks about how the risk of them being caught is what determines where they can go. I've seen the Broadway play based on it, "Promises, Promises".
I think this is one of those formative episodes of the early series. We get more insight into Don's past, we get more exposure to Roger Sterling, and Joan's personal life, and even more of a look at Bert Cooper.
To give some context to Carol's confession, anti-sodomy laws in New York were still on the books at this time, so it was literally illegal to have gay sex. The Stonewall Riots, which was a seminal moment in the US gay rights movement where people rioted after police raided (and harassed, beat up, and arrested) patrons of a gay bar, wouldn't happen until 1969. If Joan wanted to, she could have gotten Carol arrested or beaten or thrown out of their apartment because of her confession, and she would have had complete legal and societal support.
I think you're right that Don is projecting onto Rachel. Specifically, I think he's projecting that she thinks & feels the same way as him. He's looking for validation and support that what he feels is correct, which is why he makes her verbally say that she wants to have sex as well, instead of just going through with it for sexual gratification when she stops resisting. He doesn't want sex, he wants somebody to say "Your nihilistic outlook on life and self-serving ways are normal and appropriate for the world".

I think Joan may be getting too much credit here.
Joan was not giving Caroll an out. Otherwise they might have gone out and done something else that night that didn't involve Joan conspicuously fucking a man in the same apartment where they live.
Joan's response and behavior was an outright rejection of Carroll's *orientation*. There was no understanding there. It was a firm "No, AND how dare you even go there." She threw her heterosexuality in Carroll's face by having them come home with two men and going to bed with one of them basically right in front of Caroll.
If Joan had any kind of understanding or sympathy for Carroll, she never would have left Carroll out there with the other guy.
I think the critical thing to understand about Joan (and many women of this time and place) is that she fundamentally accepts the patriarchy as right and good. It is as normal to her as the air she breathes. She never noticed the stench. The fact that she skillfully navigates this social order does not mean that she questions it. Joan works *within* the system. It would never occur to her to challenge it and imagine another way. She wouldn't want to!
For me, this is a big part of the genius of Mad Men: the way it shows that often, people who live in an oppressive system *don't know they are being oppressed.* That, is Joan.
Great reaction and discussion as always.
Julien
2025-07-13 00:40:54 +0000 UTC
Agreed. Love your analysis. Like you said, Joan has to deal with unwanted advances all day at work. And guess what, turns out the girl she knew from highschool that she eventually was able to get an apartment together with... Wanted her as well. She's not even "safe" at home with someone of the same sex. Just shows the fucking minefield she has to traverse daily, and the type of interactions that she's had to deal with her entire life. All of this has forced her to temper her interactions with literally everyone in her life going forward.

Incredible Joan episode. Two moments stand out for me: First, how smoothly she rebuffs her roommate's declaration of love -- because what does Joan do all day besides fend off unwanted advances?
Second, of course, is the *crushing* moment with Bert at the elevator. The parallel to "The Apartment" (great movie, by the way) is heartbreaking on its own, but it coming immediately after Bert gives her some genuinely well-intentioned advice about her affair with Roger, as if to say that even *he* sees her like a tray of canapés (great line, by the way), is just a perfect statement about how boxed in Joan is by the world around her. Christina Hendricks is absolutely terrific on this series and she just shreds the (always incredible) material they give her.
I also love how we initially think Bert is oblivious to the Roger/Joan situation when he calls her in to write the telegrams (telegrams, by the way!) only for the show to double back and wallop us with that moment. You don't need an action-heavy plot to do great plot twists.

Darrach
2025-07-13 00:09:08 +0000 UTC
Yeah, Episode 303 has been removed on some streamers / in some countries for "controversy" surrounding one specific scene. It's an overt moment of racism that's totally in-step with the time period and the show's interrogation of the era. We aren't meant to interpret it as anything other than racism.
It's ridiculous that the episode wouldn't be available -- to say nothing of how this specific censorship implies that all the other racism, homophobia, sexism, etc. on the series is "fine" in comparison. Other streamers have just included a pre-credits message about the moment and its historical context, which is a much more sensible solution.
