What's crazy is that the game is still, imo, far more cinematic than the T.V show. It's not even that the show always does a bad job, but rather that the game's cinematic are marvelous. Joel's death scene in the game for instance was one of the most beautifully tense scenes I've ever watched.

This trope of trying distinguish between justice, vengeance, punishment, whatever. It makes zero sense. Forget “the law” for a minute. Law just exists as a way to write down rules that we mostly think help define morality.. sort of.. In the context of morality, laws are just rough black and white guidelines that can easily change depending on whoever wrote them down Every time somebody in a movie or show says “this isn’t vengeance, it’s justice”, or “this isn’t justice, it’s punishment”, or “this isn’t punishment, it’s blah blah blah”.. None of that makes any sense. Your actions are completely defined by the context they’re in. If you murder 12 people because your father was murdered, that is all that is. We should try to quantify the morality of that decision compared to other choices you could have made. These definitions of justice and vengeance, and the way the'yre used as justifications, it doesn't help As Lola pointed out, the end result is the same

The Last of Us is in a weird position of being a game designed to emulate prestige tv, that is now being translated directly into its initial inspiration. Both game and show hang on to the vestiges of the other. In particular Part 2 being a revenge story. That type of story is common in games partly for how it creates context for the action gameplay. Players can only take so many 'people talking in rooms' scenes before they want to actually play the game they purchased. So while both players and viewers might think 'revenge isn't the answer', if only because they're used to it, taking revenge in a game is a very different feeling to watching it in a movie, because it's tied up in what the player wants to do. I'm wary of spoiling things, and rambling on too long, but I think this is worth considering whether or not you've played the game. I had mixed feelings on the game, but my favourite aspect of it was the gameplay, and how that reflected on the characters and tied into their stories. Despite constant complaints that the Last of Us is 'a movie game', being a passive viewer of the story creates a very different feeling, especially in this one.

I just feel like unlike the game, you’re shown Abby’s reasoning beforehand instead of mid game which would of course make you more empathetic to begin with. Whereas the game you’re ready to break kneecaps. Both game and show portray Ellie’s downfall well imo

Brayden Underscore

They can do that in a week. I knew excellent reactors who binged it straight through in a one day.

Thoughts: I never expected these two to be bloodthirsty for revenge against Abby, but imo it's a failure of storytelling that they are watching episode 3 and saying "No Ellie, don't go after Abby, revenge won't make you feel better." Really not sure what to say about that Gail/Tommy scene. On one hand, we should probably not be reading everything said by the woman who proudly introduces herself as "a complete fuckin' mess" as straight text... But it so close to what (it seems) Mazin's read on Ellie is that I'm really baffled by what is/isn't supposed to be subtext there. If we had the same story as the game, I'd be reading Tommy's worry that "Ellie will follow Joel down a bad path" as him actually being worried that *he* will do that. But Tommy didn't chase Abby to Seattle, so it's not that. I don't know. Overall, I think it's a confused scene that isn't hitting the right thematic marks (yes, like a lot of the season). I don't know how they could have padded out the rest of the episode to make it work, but I have no idea how you shoot that *gorgeous* footage of Ellie at Joel's grave and don't end the episode there.

“Why are you clapping?” 😂

I know you guys don’t normally do movies but I’d love if y’all reacted to Sinners (2025).

Zachary Beverly

It was mentioned in a previous video but I think spending a month on the recent show ‘Adolescence’ would be really worthwhile.

Darrach

I wanted Mad Men, not a show that makes Men Mad 😭

Kara

yeah unfortunately the writers really do a whole lot of telling rather than showing this season.

Man...a proper Red dead series would be the ultimate dream😮‍💨

I liked this episode more than others. I like episodes that focus on characters and their emotional state, specifically Ellie in this episode. I like that she is lying to everyone and pretending to be "fine" when she is obviously not fine. I personally think it makes her character more interesting. I just wish they kept that for the entire season, because after this episode it kinda felt like Ellie forgot Joel died. However, I found the town council meeting very weird. I don't know why the writers had to literally spoon feed the audience on the themes of revenge. Show don't tell?? On the other hand, my favorite scene of the episode was Ellie visiting Joels grave. I love when actors are able to convey a string of thoughts without saying a single word. You can tell that Ellie was thinking of the good moments with Joel, and how she is trying to hold onto that memory but it fades away. Dina's actress does the same type of acting next episode.

LM Plays: Red Dead Dawn/Redemption II, coming soon

Darrach

SAME .. I was thinking it was today or tomorrow 🤞🏼

I totally agree! Ellie in the game is like: 'I have to hunt her down, I need revenge!', while being a real survival artist. Ellie in the show, though? She’s giggling, cracking jokes, not really into revenge, and has no clue how to stay quiet in the wild. I really don't understand why they changed her so much, because the goal of the story was letting go of revenge.

When will Mad Men come out? I'm itching so bad for it

bondbond53

God, I wished this season was better. Just so narratively all over the place and some terrible characterization

Brakthir

Of course they post the reaction 1 second after I posted my joke 😂
