2025-06-08 22:38:37 +0000 UTCAfter watching the first 10 episodes of Monster (CBM version). I have to say, it is incredibly overrated so far. The show is such a time piece of early 90s and early 00s drama serial thriller, that you'd think it was a banger and to see that its an anime, just evokes "Wow, it must be so interesting". It's really not. I wish I had watched this in 2004-2005 around the time of its release because I would have been blown away. In the current context, it's just not that good. Incredibly generic in its dialogue, its scenes, the way characters describe what's happening and the symbolisms. The twists and turns are so telegraphed that anyone that has watched more than 5 TV shows will be able to see them a mile away. It is a soap opera thriller with no substance that can only be appreciated if you transport your brain in to 2004 and dismiss everything that has come out in the last 20 years of anime. Which its not its fault but it makes the experience just "okay", not something I'd want to sit through 74 episodes for, especially after hearing how polarizing it is towards the end because of its pacing. I wish you good luck, girls. I hope you enjoy it, and I hope you can find it engaging enough to dip your feet in the puddle of water that is the depth that this show has for 74 episodes. I'll give it 10 more episodes cause apparently the 15 episode mark is when "it gets really good, trust me!".

2025-06-07 18:10:09 +0000 UTCcannot believe the day has come. You're so not ready for how good this story is. It's my first time watching the anime because i only read the manga i'm so excited!! And who told you monster was very dark? It's dark sure but it's more nuanced than that. It's a very human story so there is also lot of beauty in it. You'll see for yourself but the impact that monster left on me is similar to vinland or orb let's say. Don't get me wrong, those stories are very different can't even compare and i personnaly love monster more but they are similar in the way they made me feel. They can be very sad but i never felt like i wanted to end my life or anything it's quite the opposite in fact. And since i mentionned orb on the movements of the earth, i really recommend this show to you. It's a 25 ep finished anime so i hope you'll consider it afet bebob. The writing is stunning and i know you'll love it.

I hope you did watch multiple episodes at once like you mentioned. So that any comments this first episode don't spoiler you. For me, when I first watched this I binged all episodes so fast.

If at all possible you guys should try to get the originals! I think some people have posted good links here.

2025-06-05 18:52:30 +0000 UTCThe Monster setting is incredibly interesting. It begins in 1986, in a Germany divided into East and West. The Soviet Union only 4 years before its collapse. Turkish guest workers remain and do not return to their homeland, which was viewed negatively by many conservatives at the time. Today, many Turks stand together with conservatives against Arab immigrants/refugees in Germany, which is somewhat ironic 😅 I'm really looking forward to your reaction to the show. It might feel more like a live-action drama than a typical anime, since it lacks many of the classic anime tropes. (HBO was very close in adapting it in a Live Action show.) Urasawa has a very unique way of telling stories and writing dialogue. It's often natural, but can also be quite raw and intense. I really recommend his other adapted story Pluto very much because of that! His best story "20th Century Boys" is still only in manga. As for Monster, one thing I’d suggest is to keep asking yourself: What defines a monster? And when does a human become one?

Some speculate that it stems from similar social structures and historical parallels, the cultural and literary exchange between the two countries before the 20th century, or their close cooperation after the war. I kinda enjoy it. It's fun to see German culture in media. Monster maybe the "worst" pick. So many evil/grey characters. But I love to see the restaurants, technology and technical devices. I got flooded with childhood memories after seeing the Grundig television 😂

Apart from Monster he's created multiple other highly acclaimed works, which doesn't happen often. They have a somewhat similar tone, but different plots. And he's a musician too. Overall a very talented person.

Honestly, I know Monster's music by heart and a lot of people agree with me that the changes in the International version are odd. I don't know whether Crunchyroll has the same music placements as the Japanese one, but try to find Monster with the same HD quality and with the Japanese music score if possible. Both the International and Japanese versions have the same score I think but they use different tracks at times. The music that played while Tenma was contemplating going back to the child was ill-placed imo. They replaced the track "Drift Mind" with "The Seeds of Time". Obviously, it's up to you.

Then I never wanted to pick it back up where I left off because it was way too good of a series for me to continue with a foggy memory, and when I found out yall would react to it I knew it’d be the best way to re-experience the series until I can continue on my own again!❤️ Edit: it’s actually been 2 years, oh my😭
