Matthew Kung

It would not be the first time that they watch short shows in that slot in between the next long show just to catch up

I said this in a comment a few episodes ago, but in season six we've seen the transformation for Carmela from being a "bystander" to being IN. She's always been "in", but she never admitted it to herself and always claimed that she's not involved. We've seen her bring up several times over the course of the show that she "just" keeps Tony fed and clothed. It was only when she spoke with Dr. Melfi while Tony was in the hospital that she FINALLY admitted that her presence in the marriage has been an accessory and enabling in all of Tony's crimes. But instead of being the moment of clarity that got her to leave Tony for good, it seems like that got her to just stop pretending otherwise and fully commit. She's given him advice and observations on several points since then, and we see it again here. She's getting more and more involved because she's finally accepted that she's involved anyway, so she might as well try and take control where she can.

Sopranos not being as "serialized" as later shows is nothing to do with its age imo. The Sopranos was one of the most unpredictable shows of its era as well. Chase loved to throw curveballs, generally as an attempt to reflect the randomness and unpredictability of real life. And the show is mostly episodic by nature, that's just its format and it fits to this type of story. I love that about it. There are still shows like that around today. Not every show needs to be like BrBa or Lost.

Nice reaction! Hard to believe that the Sopranos reactions will soon be over. Generally speaking, I'm really impressed with how well they understand the characters and the show, even though the plot of the Sopranos is a bit erratic and hard to predict. I guess that's one aspect of the show that shows its age, because it's not as serialized as newer shows. When it comes to the question of what shows to watch next, Andor has been the best series this year for me personally, better than Severance or The Last of Us so far. I'd be very curious to see what people who aren't deeply into Star Wars (and Andor is certainly the best Star War) think of it.

On the discussion about Andor, unless I misunderstood you, Andor won’t have season 3, it’s 2 seasons and that’s it for the show. So there’s no need to hold it off for a new season.

Patrick

Regarding a couple other comments: I probably do more harm by calling attention to them. My bad.

Marcus Cato

Yes pls Mad Men, you won't be disappointed.

TylerNorCal

Just pitch perfect Sopranos that in the same episode Little Carmine has perhaps his best malaprop (the sacred and the propane!) and the most self aware, honest, introspective moment maybe out of all the characters in the show when he tells Tony about his dream and how it changed him.

John Collins

this episode might have my favourite ending in the whole show, though there's some real strong contenders (Employee of the Month, Where's Johnny, the episode right before this one). perfect song choice, so genuinely ominous with Phil's "no more of this" and the utterly dead looks in Tony and Chris's eyes. there's no love between those two men anymore.

castration_rite

Yeah I've enjoyed seeing their reading of Carmela develop. They say they are disappointed in her for accepting Tony's cheating as long as it happens in the background, but the funny thing is this is exactly where Carmela was in season 1, when her acceptance of Tony's philandering is discussed directly with Father Intintola, and they adored her in s1. The difference is that in the early seasons, L&M convinced themselves that Carmela's arc for the show would be to eventually divorce Tony and spoke of it like it would be her final triumph, like Luke Skywalker blowing up the Death Star at the end of Star Wars. When they split in Whitecaps, fulfilling what L&M had been eagerly hoping for since at least Commendatori — but then she ended up selling herself back into the marriage for 600 boxes of ziti and fully re-committing herself to being Tony's wife in s6 after the shooting — L&M have come to understand that like Tony says: "you are what you are", and this is who Carmela actually is. She's not the downtrodden, plucky hero who will rise up to triumph over the mean husband who doesn't respect her enough. Carmela's arc is a circle, and there's no fairy tale ending for her.

"and the mailman.... at that point I had to fully commit" is such a great line

RIP Johnny Sack, at least he didn't get his brains blown out in the middle of a restaurant

mundanelotus

Honestly I think you’re really reaching there. Birthday candle smoke equals a need pope? I just don’t see it

They said in the episode Chris's own dad was Tony's mentor (the prequel movie explores this). That adds a unique layer to their relationship that isn't really going to be the same with his own with AJ or Jackie Jr. or whichever son figure. This was also mentioned in season 5 (Adriana mentioned Dickie was like a brother to Tony). Their relationship isn't just a "Tony feels no love for Chris and then decided to use him". It already had a history of baggage and it also started to morph after key events in the show. If you think back to the early seasons, Tony tried to genuinely empathize with him when Chris had a brief period of depression (season 1 episode 8). He genuinely was distraught when Chris was shot in season 2. There was clear love there and plenty of times where he stuck his neck out for Chris when it would have been easier to just kill him (think Chris messing with Junior in season 1), and all of this is before season 4 where Tony formally wanted to make Chris his successor and ramped up the manipulation. Tony even delayed Chris's "making" and only granted it after he got shot (maybe he felt he owed him at that point). The relationship is more complex than just a carbon copy of Tony and Livia. That's why he felt those genuine emotions during the therapy. In season one Livia tried to murder Tony. In season two Tony had to kill Pussy (who was his best friend, not just a regular rat he had to kill). Season three he tried to keep Jackie Jr on the straight and ended up having to order his murder. This show doesn't follow a clean point A -> point B character change (like say Breaking Bad) but these are all very natural things that would morph someone who already has a pretty warped view of love and whose vocation just enables more dark thoughts and dysfunctional relationships.

I’m glad you talked about the music in the ending. I believe Stevie Van Zandt (Silvio’s actor) had a lot of say in the music choices, but regardless that unnerving feeling you had at the end is exactly how I felt in my first watch

Knot

I know Paulie's line about beating cancer comes off very self-centered (and it is), but I like the fact that he was trying to get at how life is a completely absurd carousel

*Maedo* according to Furio

Gaba Gool

Shout to Sydney Pollack who was such a pro 🙌🤌🙏

Daniel_

Genuinely think Peggy has a chance to be their favourite character ever

Mike

That Chickentown needle drop is so perfect. I love that whole scene with Phil (especially the Leonardo/Leotardo explanation lol). Great episode. Funny to see them coming around on the Carmela hypocrisy movement. She is brilliant character, and it's a testament to Edie Falco's performance that you can buy her as a (relative) bystander among all these evil people for so long.

Mike

It pains Tony to hear little Carmine saying he quit chasing the big boss status because Tony cannot do that.

Daniel_

One of my favorite episodes of the whole series. Danny Baldwin playing himself obviously; he was also on Homicide Life on the Street, a great show on NBC that aired in the 90s and a sort of predecessor to The Wire. Sydney Pollack as the wife killing oncologist Warren Feldman gives perhaps the best guest performance on the show. Considering how many great one episode characters there are in this series—Fran Feldstein, John Schwinn, Alan Sapingsly as examples—that’s saying a lot.

Octavio

So, it’s time for One Piece? 😂 If yall would have started watching that like 5 years ago you’d only have 10 more to go! It really is legit though, yall should watch it in your personal life if you watch anime for just yourselves at all.

Truemeathead

He was a fuckin' kid.

JG

47 years old.. just a fuckin kid

Josip

Theres no Andor season 3 season 2 is the last season

Jack Hoff

They keep saying that Tony doesn't love anybody but I think he really loves Meadow.

Oscar

I think logistically its a bad idea to put a short show in the long show slot. I love Andor (and voting for Mad Men over it will be soooo painful 😭) but basically with Sopranos winding down it is "smart" to start up a new longer show so all the Sopranos fans who want to watch the new show can lock in for another year. Think Wire into Sopranos. You've never not had a long show in the slow. My worry is that Sopranos folks will end their subscriptions during the 3 month break and not come back 😔 Eventually we'll run out of long shows but we're not there yet. Crazy to think about though... that recommendations thread was 80% "they've already reacted to / watched this" 💀

Kara

IMO you need to watch Rogue One (movie) afterwards. Absolutely love Andor (a top 3 show for me) but I wish it ended in a more self contained way. Now when I recommend it its like: watch 2 seasons of Andor then a movie then probably 3 other movies (original trilogy) in order to actually get an ending for this era.

Kara

small clarification s2 was the final season for andor and the finale was this week ( now that it’s concluded i genuinely think it’s one of best shows of the decade if not more. it’s a true love letter to liberation movements )

Sebastian

Bravo, Wiener!

Gaboxxy

And here we have Matthew Weiner, the creator of Mad Men, with another guest appearance commenting on the New York mafia succession. A sign if I do say so myself

bondbond53

I don't know if they know a thing about Star Wars but if they don't then they should watch or react to the first 6 movies atleast.

Dimitris Spyropoulos

They're going to love Mad Men

Eric Viola

I mean it’s pretty damn close. Not as good in some areas but better in others. One of the Sopranos writers created it and I remember some of the episodes and story beats giving off overlapping vibes.

Veya

Also for people recommending Andor.. don’t they have to know a little bit of Star Wars before going into that show? I’m just curious about the answers when it comes to this show lol

Jack SV

Man.. I’m sad we are almost done with this show. At this point I feel it wouldn’t be fair for the next show to try to top this one. I know people are asking for mad men.. and to be fair I haven’t seen that show but I highly doubt it can be as good as this show.

Jack SV

I'm gonna recommend Andor. It's just 2 seasons and it's the best anti-fascist piece of fiction ever put to film

Sverrir_Thor

There is no season 3 of Andor coming, it’s a two season show.

Darrach

this is fuckin’ chickentown…

Darrach

They’re in the endgame now
