The Sopranos 6x06 Reaction

Comments

Meadow! Don't give me any of that "poverty of the Mezzogiorno" bullshit. A little education is a dangerous thing.

Thomas Fahey

It's not a bad storyline. It probably just got a bit more screen time than it deserved.

Marcus Cato

"Once you in it, you in it." -Slim Charles And Meadow is in it. Same goes for Angie with her money on the street.

Marcus Cato

Worth noting that it was Vito who killed Jackie Jr in Season 3, and here in an ironic twist of fate, Meadow is the one who signs his death warrant. The woman sitting in front of Vito at the diner is Georgianne Walken, who was the casting director of The Sopranos, and is also notably Christopher Walken wife! I like how Lola picked up on the variety of reactions to Vitos homosexuality. Tony, Bobby, and Patsy as she pointed out, had relatively mild and ‘progressive’ takes… at least for New Jersey mobsters in 2006 that is aha

Darrach

No one is arguing about what is "right", it's just a factor to take into account among many other things. Whenever you judge someone's character with limited info it's never gonna be an empiric study lol, doesn't mean your gut isn't often right. It's not about "oh he's have a dog so he's obviously not a terrorist", but rather "these are all the traits and attitudes that makes me believe it's unlikely this person is a fundamentalist terrorist, which includes him owning a dog". Some people are almost trying to turn this into a theological discussion when that's besides the point. And sure, Islam is not a monolith, but extremist fundamentalists do usually share things in common. The discussion is around the possibility of the person being a terrorist, not how muslim they are.

Gaboxxy

"live free or die" is the new hampshire state motto. there was an episode of breaking bad with the same name when it was revealed that walter white also fled to new hampshire after everything went down.

kingsley scanlon

i’ve seen people in the comments argue about wether it’s right for chris to assume muslims having a dog means they’re westernized and personally i think it’s ridiculous. islam is not a monolith

Probably the funniest therapy session so far. I love how after Melfi pushes him on it, Tony admits that in the end, he didn't really care about Vito's sexual orientation. Speaking of homosexuality in the Mafia, The Genovese family has a long history of having gay associates. Vinny Gigante was close friends with gay mob lawyer Roy Cohn. Genovese captain Matty Ianiello owned a ton of gay bars, as did Carlo Gambino. They both lived to ripe old ages. Those pics with Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, Carlo Gambino and a bunch of other mobsters were taken in the back room of one of the gay night clubs Carlo owned. Some of the most successful mobsters had a rather amicable business relationship with the gay community. The smartest mobsters were all about money. Of course, there were lines drawn and overall the mob was anti-gay. The Vito situation is partly based on former Jersey boss John D'Amato.

Season 6 of Sopranos is both the darkest and funniest season lmao

leonthesleepy

Tony having conventional opinions on gay men reminds me of Melfi telling him in season 3 how deep down he's very conventional. In the early seasons he's alternating between trying to be the conventional dad and the mafia don. Season 4 and 5 he starts to lose the dad side as he loses his family. Now he's trying to get it back. FYI there was also shows like Queer as Folk, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, movies like Brokeback Mountain in the 2000s. Plus characters like Omar lol. Although honestly I doubt Tony cares about that too much, it's just a little irritating to him. His mindset is woman + woman = appealing, man + man = not appealing. Which is shallow but is at least more honest that Paulie's bullshit, and isn't violent.

Mark M

I swear this show only gets funnier the more you rewatch it

Diego Corredor

That would be Maine.

Gaboxxy

Loved to watch Lola laughing about some offensive sexual jokes about Vito, and Milena looking at her in desbelief at laughing with these terrible and awful people. So many hilarious scenes/frases in this episode, Paulie is one of the best. I am sure they will laugh more with Sopranos when they rewatch it in the future.

Diego Palma

I mean, he has has made it perfectly clear to everyone that it's a shame he's losing such a big earner, it's not like he's hiding that or anything lol. Even so, at this point Vito coming back is out of the question and he knows it, he's out of the business for good whether he lives or dies. The main reason to avoid killing him without doubt is that he doesn't care about his homosexuality and he doesn't feel Vito should dies because of it, simply as that. Even Melfi realized his economic arguments were bullshit and he was just avoiding speaking his true feelings, and because she knows him well by this point she kept poking him to get it out of him, but of course it's something he can only express with her (and to some extent Silvio). There's no way he can just openly say to the rest of the crew he accepts Vito's homosexuality, especially now that he is trying to make a point not to be perceived as weak.

Gaboxxy

Tony's push back on the most reactionary takes on Vito from the other guys is part "who cares" but also I think mostly "I might be able to profit more off Vito if he sticks around"

Eric Viola

oh yes, its comin g the acepptance of no redemption

Benjamin duran

Also I think it's starting to solidify now, the essence of the Ojibwe saying: Pitying yourself while a wind carries you on your back. Represents the duo effect of Tony's family on him. Saving and harming him at the same time, not being a monolithic symbol. The right connection was made between Meadow and the wind saving him (pointedly Tony was also starting to follow his mother into the house). While the pitying part of the saying, Tony through Livia's influence, have morphed it into another "poor you". He's thrown it out a number of times now not seeming to retain what the actual connotation of the quote is in the context of a more positive message.

Veya

Chris's AA sponsor: "Vito Spatafore is an a**-muncher... Sorry it's true" "Probably bullsh*t"

Eric Viola

The thing with Meadow is that we're seeing the harm insulation does. Unlike his own childhood where he was exposed to actual violence, Meadow and AJ have only the general understanding of what Tony does. There are SOME potential positives but we're seeing the negatives here where it seems to allow their cognitive dissonance to take a stronger hold. It's not too dissimilar to people who can buy meat at the store but if you actually expose them to visceral violence of the process, they may feel differently (even if only temporarily). Similarly, with Carmela, it's one thing that she knows what her husband does on a conceptual level, but what would be her reaction be if she actually saw exactly what he does. If she actually saw Ralphie beat Tracee to death, maybe she actually leaves back in season three when the therapist tells her to.

Veya

"Every T.V show rubs your nose in it" As they spend most of this episode of this mobster show on a gay romance lol. Still they did it far better than Joker 2.

Jack Hoff

I think it's more or less what would happen in almost any organized criminal organization of mostly working class folk, even in progressive societies. It's seen as a weakness, especially if you're a "bottom" homosexual.

Gaboxxy

New Hampshire is as far north as you can go in the U.S before you hit Canada.

Jack Hoff

I don't really think most patrons even care either way if you upload the video to Vimeo or Youtube, so don't even worry about it. As long as we get to watch it with decent quality that's all that matters.

Gaboxxy

That's most of the world unfortunately.

Jack Hoff

Damn they're crushing season 6. Can't wait for Mad Men!

Eric Viola

That you for the hard work

Daniel_

This episode was pure comedy gold tbh. While I might be one of the few people who doesn’t really care about Vito’s storyline, I can definitely is still appreciate what it adds to the story.

Jack SV

Have fun in the mountains! Say "hi" to your family! The Behind the Scenes tidbit that is mandatory to mention for this episode: When Vito is fleeing the three guys in his car, he runs over one of their feet. That really happened while filming, and it broke the actor's foot. You're correct that New Hampshire is north of New Jersey. The state is about 1/3 the size of Serbia, with about 1/5 the population. It's one of the smaller states in the USA, but still big, so Vito COULD disappear here if he stays out of trouble. I won't say that this was THE episode that soured me on Meadow, but her actions here were very saddening. She knows that Vito is going to be killed for this and she's willfully ignoring it and acting offended that Finn would dare to suggest such a thing against her family. She got involved, she INSTIGATED by telling Carmela and Rosalie what Finn had seen, and she manifests no guilt or regret. I've said in many comments that AJ never had a chance, given his own intelligence and personality and the way he was raised. Meadow we saw DID have a chance, she could have gotten "out", but unfortunately she made the deliberate choice to stay.

JBK405

Angie a whole boss lady

bondbond53

love how angie didnt give two fucks about carmellas mickey mouse auction lmao

Josip

The sad thing is, being from Eastern Europe, I can absolutely see Vito's story playing out irl no problem

bondbond53

we used to joke that up in the mountains you have to bring the packets (of internet data) by hand, and that it would be faster to mail a USB than send a file over internet

Kara

Guys stop or the girls will get scared and stop sharing LM lore with us lmao

bondbond53

More a reference to the state motto of New Hampshire I’d wager, but it could be both certainly.

Darrach

Pretty sure it’s Lola, she has said before she has family in the mountains

Darrach

There is no Internet in the mountains of Montenegro and never will be. In the future, when American pop culture has saturated the whole earth, the only reactors remaining will be tall Balkan shepherds who will react with childish amazement when they learn that Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father and that Vito Spatafore is an assmuncher.

Derek Halvorson

It has to be Milena. The title of the video is "The Sopranos 6x06" and not "sopranos 606".

Robert H.

“Live free or die” was also the name of the first episode of Breaking Bad season 5, this was a Sopranos reference, there are several in the show including the pizza on the roof, the cancer doctor named Kennedy ect

Wayne

Whose family lives in the mountains? If I was to guess.. hmm Lola lol

Jack SV

Thanks! I'm only watching the reactions for sopranos so its helpful ❤️
