Also, every episode title is either the direct title of a famous song (Sympathy for the Devil by the Rolling Stones, Toys in the Attic by Aerosmith, etc) or reference to music in some way.

I had a friend who watched Cowboy Bebop in the early 2000's using DVD's he ordered. He only got the first DVD without realizing there were more. The last episode was this one, and he went on thinking this was the series finale and it was just a bizarre ending where everyone died lmao

As others have mentioned this episode is reminiscent to the 1979 film, Alien. Several of the episodes pay homage to many classic sci fi films which is another reason Bebop is so great. For myself it feels like a love letter to the genre while very much being its own thing.

I believe Lola is/was away for about 5-7 days and she left before Severance came out so they haven't gotten to it yet. They mention this in the opening of the last one.

Yeah, this is one of the best episodes of the series. Very much a mix of sc-fi horror and comedy.
Ed eating the creature at the end is such a great moment.

It's crazy how important those "lessons" are when you look back at the end. the writing is peak

I'll solve the mystery for you: The opening lyrics are not spoken by Spike. They are by Tim Jensen, a musician who collaborated several times with Yoko Kano and The Seatbelts for their music.
This was one of the first episodes I ever saw of this series, and it made a heck of an impression on me.
Everybody else is right that it's an homage to "Alien" and other classic sci-fi films. But it's also so perfectly unique for Cowboy Bebop.
