a subtle one i noticed; in Irving's dream sequence, the visual of the monitor revealing Helena identity, besides some of the letters being E, G, A and N, 9 i notably missing. Meaning Helena is an Eagan without the 9, lacking the virtues of Kier.

So excited that y’all are considering Andor (if S2 delivers). I know you both will love S1!!

No, Eren...it's shown that as an impressive child worker she then went on to attend a Lumon boarding school and received a special fellowship after. Her education was nurtured at the highest level. The hard labor was when she was 8

"The Nine" I think are the 9 core Lumon principles. The weird shit they pray to. Also interesting that at Irv's funeral they got 9 seconds of silence, and that Dylan was allowed 18 minutes with his outie's wife. This is a fucking cult for sure

It has nothing to do with her being a woman. It’s the fact that she would never have been able to receive the necessary education to invent a revolutionary brain implant. Especially as a kid working hard labor for Lumen

I do think it would make sense to make another slot. I read that the new trailer was HBO's most viewed ever. Reacting to a show this popular while it airs could really help attracting new viewers to the channel.
But that's up to the girls. If not I just have to be patient I guess.

Idk if they gonna watch TLOU season 2 close to its release, because they gonna watch Invincible S3 after Severance, unless they make another slot in the schedule.

Pretty funny to go from "This woman is terrifying!" to "Poor baby girl."

I'd expect Andor S1 to begin around July 14th

Here are the release dates for the upcoming shows you mentioned at the end of your discussion:
The Last of Us S2 - April 13
Andor S2 - April 22
Considering you have to watch Andor S1 first anyway, it can wait until you finish other shows and a slot frees up. However, I recommend watching Last of Us as close to it's release as possible. Spoilers are everywhere for that show. Looking forward to both!

Town is addicted to Ether since they all worked in the ether mill and got addicted to the fumes. Children worked there and "manned the vat" of ether

It's absolutely the solution an abused kid would come up with. I mean at its core, what is severance if not perfect disassociation?

One of the inventors of diethyl ether, Valerius Cordus, called it 'sweet oil of vitriol' back in the 16th century. Hence the title of the episode.

By the way, Milena asked in the previous reaction about some other awesome Apple Tv Shows that werent so well known, so here are some of my recommendations that I have watched:
1. Dopesick (Personally, i think EVERYONE should watch this, is that good)
2. Dark Matter (Its like a mix of Netflix Dark + Severance)
3. Presumed Innocent (Awesome adaptation of the book)
I think each of these are good enough to be a reaction series itself but I know that all the slots are filled. Maybe Lola could check them out on her own if she needs to distract her mind, i know that 2 weeks abstinence of Severance it´s too much.

Love that the reaction was posted just when I needed to have dinner haha. It was perfect your reaction and the reveal of how much influence Harmony truly had.

You were asking about the ether they were huffing... Ether was a real life old timey medicine that was widely used and was basically weaker chloroform (And not even that weaker). While it was used as a pain killer, it was mainly used to calm the humors. At the time people believed that certain body fluids (the humors) directly caused certain emotions, and they had to be kept in balance. Ether specifically was used to maintain black bile, which doctors of the time believed caused sadness and melancholy. This was the same reason doctors would bleed people, they thought having too much blood caused anger, so to calm people down they would drain the blood.

Cobel and the surrounding Lumon/Eagan mythology is definitely the stalest part of the show for me. But if this is officially the start of her face-turn, maybe that helps transform the character into something more interesting. So I'm all for it.
At least this episode explains why the show went with that clumsy "I'm leaving if you call Cobel" beat with Reghabi. I'm looking forward to watching her uneasy team-up with Mark, even if the getting there was so inelegant.

I believe the reason Harmony came up with Severance was shown in the huffing scene. As children, they needed to abuse ether in order to cope with backbreaking child labor. With all of her talent, she invented a much better way to deal with distress like that
Isaac

She's a brilliant cult devotee who needed to abuse drugs as a child to cope with factory work. I think her personality is well-suited to very unique circumstances she came up in. It would be weirder if she was normal

Lmao, no. There was clearly a reason they were hinting towards for why Cobel was so obsessed with seeing if the severance chip would hold up and why she was so knowledgeable about it the whole season. This was that reason. It's pretty straight forward story telling. That's why it's not out of left field. It's also very clear many (not all) are saying she couldn't invent it by herself because of some internalized misogyny. Men inventing things by themselves is often praised by society. The other reason I mentioned her being a woman is because they are telling a story based on real life. It's a man at the top of an organization taking credit for something a woman did. It's a main point of the plot that shouldn't be ignored

Because it's clear that there is almost noone alive who knows that she's the inventor. I would put money on only Jaime Eagan and a handful of others even having that knowledge.
Isaac

why is saying it's a stretch or out of left field automatically about her being a woman? I think there's a valid argument that this twist was written in after season 1 was completed. In season 1 she's largely treated as redundant by the board and is eventually fired. but now we learn she invented severance itself and has been groomed into the company since she was a child. so why would they fire her or treat her as so unimportant given what we know now

I liked this episode a lot for its world and lore building but am a little ambivalent on the reveal at the end, particularly in what seems to be trying to make harmony, at least somewhat, a sympathetic character. I know this is probably an unpopular opinion, and I know arquette is a famous actor and people love her, but I find her character a little ridiculous and cartoonish, especially the way her tone is when she delivers her lines and her random volatile snaps or outbursts. like a spoiled, pompous member of royalty or something idk

Yeah, for me this is comfortably the weakest episode of Severance but if you go back and watch Cobel's reactions to stuff last season, or in S2E02 etc it all makes sense.

I haven't watched the reaction here yet. But I just wanna say there are some valid complaints about episode 8... But anyone saying it's a stretch that Harmony could invent Severance isn't thinking clearly/isn't well educated in the numerous woman in the 1900s that pioneered so much of our complex technology and the men that took credit for their work. And those saying it was an "out of left field" reveal just need to go watch season 1 again. It makes perfect sense.
