This show is great but obviously not perfect and some of the subplots are big minuses for me. These include Chris’ Hollywood adventures and any Paulie subplot. I don’t care at all about whatever is going on with his mom.

Again people setting stupid expectations. Exactly why must this episode be watched with the finale? All y’all have done was make them expect a big cliffhanger type moment that never came. 🤦♂️

This is just my interpretation, but I always suspected that Carmine knows exactly who Paulie is, and that was his way of saying 'you got no business speaking to me'.
I think Carmine was frequently cutting people down to size in indirect ways.

Furio's final line: "You're standing too close" said to Tony at the helicopter applies to himself. He realised that he had got too close to Carmela and had to leave.
This episode continues the tradition of AJ witlessly passing on information to others without realising what's going on. He tells Meadow that Carmela had been sad that Furio left, like in season 1 when he told Livia that Tony was seeing a therapist, and in season 2 when he told Livia that Janice had been discussing her DNR.
For an episode which largely revolves around Carmela's hidden sadness, it's worth listening to her interpretation of AJ's book 'Billy Budd': "Billy Budd is the story of an innocent sailor being picked on by an evil boss". I think she's projecting her feeling about Furio and Tony, where Furio is the handsome sailor and Tony the evil boss. That's why she bends over backwards to dismiss the "gay book" interpretation, as it undermines her reading of it, which she clearly pushed AJ to put into his essay (as it's revealed that he didn't read the book).
The final exchange between Tony and Carmela when talking about Meadow is very subtle— "She can do whatever she wants... isn't that what you dreamed about?", to which Carm flatly replies "yes". Tony clearly intends the question to mean Carmela dreamed that *Meadow* would be able to do whatever she wants with her life, but the phrasing works in another way, to mean "isn't being free what you wanted for *your* life?". I think Carmela is really answering this hidden question, which makes sense of why she answers it so flatly.

One of my favourite background jokes in this episode is how AJ's English teacher kept assigning him books with homosexual themes, and how it all went over his head every time lol.

My grandmother, who turned 100 last year, kept driving until she was 95 or 96 or so. Never had an accident or any problem. We all thought she should stop driving to be safe, and I always insisted on driving whenever I was with her, but since she was still physically able to do it we had no legal means of stopping her. It wasn't until her vision began to go that we could finally convince her to let us chauffer her around.

Jokes aside, I actually like Paulie a bit more than most of the other mobsters simply because he’s comfortable in his own skin and doesn’t try to pretend he’s a good dude unlike most of the others that delude himself. This is why he never married or have kids, he knows he’s not fit to be a family man due to his line of work and doesn’t kid himself.
Don’t get me wrong, he’s still awful, but at least he knows it.
