His fleeting moments of humanity was always what's saving him from becoming a complete monster and we're getting small moments where it's trying to fight it's way up to the surface to save him from completely succumbing to his worst self, which yes, can cause even more harm than he already does. Imagine a Ralphie or Ritchie as a boss. Small differences in the grand scheme, but maybe one extra person not dead for little reason, so it's not nothing. Otherwise yeah, not much to this episode except some more character shading. Kind of a Sopranos version of a light christmas special. Even with the goofy sitcom transition editing to underscore it.

2024-12-15 10:32:46 +0000 UTCGood that they watched Pine Barrens directly afterwards so that they can watch it fresh without seeing all the comments below that are hyping it up... but it's kinda hilarious that for all the effort that people (including myself) put in in the comments telling people not to leave spoilers, they get a mini spoiler in each episode just from their streaming platform showing screenshots and having a blurb about the episode. So they're already going into Pine Barrens expecting it to go in a certain direction from the start.

2024-12-15 09:03:50 +0000 UTCThe relationship between Tony and Pussy is always interesting to me because it's another instance of Tony breaking the mold of how a Mafioso should act and feel. Every other mobster in this episode remarks that they would have loved to be the one that killed Pussy, while Tony is seemingly the only one who grieved and is still haunted by the fact that he had to kill his best friend. He even got a panic attack and has to run to his shrink because of it. He still sees him as a former friend while the others reduce him to a rat. This distinction between Tony's empathy and the rest of the mob is also shown in the previous episodes with regards to Tracee, whereas the other mobsters dismissed her as just a whore and thinking the only thing Ralph did wrong was disrespecting the Bing. Definitely one of the most fascinating aspects of Tony's character to me. In the flashbacks we also see that Junior wanted to be boss before Jackie. Pretty intriguing to see Tony throwing his support for his best friend taking power over his own blood. This episode also has one of my all-time favorite Sopranos shots, which is Tony leaning on the guardrails facing us while Pussy and Jackie turn their backs to us (4:15 in the video). A great visual shorthand for him losing two of his best friends while he's the only one who remains.

Uncle Junior really felt some kind of way that he was passed up for promotion while his younger brother’s son’s best friend took charge. Jackie Sr’s death by natural causes really set the entire show in motion It’s really interesting to see the effect that Charmaine has on Tony, her scolding him was enough to make him leave the restaurant. I think their connection is really understated, her turning him down when they were teenagers and living her best life still bothers him. Meanwhile he literally blew up her restaurant It’s mentioned in passing but the man who Tony’s father Johnny cut the finger off of (Mr Satriale) ended his life shortly after helping Johnny get the strip club. Tony goes on and on about Italian heritage but the two main businesses that he runs are literally built off the back of an Italian man his father drove to suicide
