character focused, you say?? I'm in. I love, and prefer, character-driven shows/movies. The only ones I haven't seen from what you listed are Godfather 2, Moonlight and The Squid and the Whale! I plan to finish the Godfather trilogy eventually bc I loved this first movie, but I've also heard good things about Moonlight so I do have my eyes on that one too.

What a pleasant surprise. A few quick thoughts on the movie.
1. There’s not a second wasted in this movie. Its long but literally every frame is important. That’s so rare. If it were filmed today it would be a miniseries cause even more story to tell.
2. The studio did not want Al Pacino to play Michael, they were struggling and were desperate for a hit. They wanted a major star and this was Pacino’s first or second movie. He was a theater actor, i think. Francis Ford Coppola had to fight to cast him.
3. Many (probably most) people think Godfather 2 is even better than Godfather 1. It’s famous for being the rare sequel that’s possibly better than the original. Both are considered among the best films ever made.

Now.. like you girls mentioned multiple times, this could have been a show but at the same time I feel the movie doesn’t waste any time engaging you with the story and characters. Yeah, in addition to what you've said, dukie and namond and most of the street characters in that show are very marginalized, and the system is too established, specific and deterministic to capture the general malaise and dread of "reckoning" that the sopranos is going for, which reflects a broader america. It's specifically the fact the characters in sopranos aren't as marginalized (or even truly marginalized at all, it regularly pokes at the self-pity some italian-americans feel) that makes it a more biting critique on this front because marginalized people will suffer everywhere, while these people are supposed to be in a better america.

Absolutely, and I don't want to discredit those shows, which are amazing. I've seen Deadwood, The Sopranos, and The Wire called a kind of trilogy about the rise, fall, and rot of the American experience, which I think very apt. But The Sopranos, and its characters especially, feel more fascinated (perversely fascinated, mostly) by "regular" American life -- pop culture, Gladiator, vacationing is Aspen, Hollywood, stock trading, Tom Petty, high school football, all of it -- than The Wire or Breaking Bad ever did. (Mad Men is a period piece, but it's an obvious sibling to The Sopranos in this regard. Blame Matt Weiner.)
Not to say that Namond & Dukie aren't living regular American lives -- they are, tragically -- but they aren't classic American Teens™ in the same way that Tony's kids are, for example.
I've always thought of The Sopranos as the quintessential post-9/11 show, which is interesting, because fully half of it aired pre-9/11. But maybe the way that it *anticipated* that certain era only makes it more fitting as a standard-bearer for the period.
(Or was it Quasimodo who predicted it? Something like that.)

Sopranos being a uniquely american show is also a bit more understated than say some of the other contemporaries, especially when it's mixed in with a bunch of other themes and follows a single family with pretty general human issues as opposed to say, The Wire literally detailing an american city (though far from a typical one) or how Breaking Bad's plot wouldn't really be possible without how the healthcare specifically works in the US.
It's been described as the best at portraying a specific Bush era, turn of the century, 2000s America. Not just the specific kind of atmosphere but also the feeling of transitioning to a post 9/11 era and the general sense of increasing malaise that serves as an underlying subtext to a lot of the ideas being explored, especially later on.

Just for clarification, because I think it's made more clear in the books than the film, but Vito's sue for peace was also in part pragmatic for the revenge he cooked up with Michael. It doesn't necessarily step on the point about Michael being different than his father or that Vito genuinely wanting peace at the time but it's an extra layer to Vito's decision at the meeting. Revenge was always there despite him saying otherwise.
They sued for peace and agreed to concessions that weakened them, then the move to Vegas further pushed that image that they're weak (and it's a genuine business move anyways), and then specifically after Vito died, Michael made his move. Vito pointed said *he* won't be the one to break the peace, because Michael will.

So thrilled to see this! (And greedily awaiting Part 2, which I think you'll like even more.)
Putting aside the superficial references to this film (and the sequels) in The Sopranos, I think the broader context is so important. Particularly the way that both use the mafia as a proxy for America and American life.
This may be the most *American* movie ever, in the way that it examines (and refutes) the idea of the post-war American Dream. Vito dreamed that Michael would escape his life and rise to become the politician holding the puppet strings, just like immigrant families dream that their children will graduate high school, and go to college, and eclipse their station. To *make it* in America. But The Godfather says that, well, maybe it's not so simple. "There wasn't enough time." Is there ever enough time to set your children up for success? Is it even really possible in this world? The film opens with Bonasera declaring that he believes in America. Two hours later, Vito is calling on him to help bury his son.
Because at the same time that Vito is trying to boost Michael into a new life, he is grappling with the pending doom of the drug trade -- and (we know from history) the beginning of the end for the golden age of the mafia in America. The politicians will be his friend when he involved with gambling. Not so much with heroin. So the tragedy is not just that Michael hasn't eclipsed the life that his father built; it's that he might be inheriting a career in an industry in decline. Like the cobbler who passes on his family business to his son while Nike shoe factories spring up in Asia.
So flash-forward 50 years to Tony, sitting down on the first day in Melfi's office, lamenting how he feels that "lately, I'm getting the feeling that I came in at the end. The best is over." -- and how that parallels the post-9/11 disillusion with the broader American Dream. Tony watches a movie like this, and sees Vito Corleone in all his splendour, and romanticizes the heyday of the American mafia. Hell, look at that wedding sequence. How couldn't he? The best is over, indeed. Why do all the guys sit around Satriale's quoting the movie? Why does Christopher want to sell his story to Hollywood? The tension in The Sopranos is that... maybe the mob life isn't all that it's cracked up to be. And by extension, maybe America isn't all that it's cracked up to be. Maybe it's ennui all the way down.
(It's worth mentioning that the film itself is a period piece, and that Coppola is there in 1972 drawing the same conclusions about the rise and fall of the American empire.)
I don't know if The Sopranos is the most American television show ever made -- the show most *about* America -- but it's close. And it shares that DNA with The Godfather.

This was a great surprise. Regarding Vito Corleone, he was basically the perfect mobster. He was an intelligent criminal with his own sense of ethics and a huge love for his family. Michael, Sonny and Fredo each inherited an aspect of Vito's personality. Michael inherited Vito's ability to be cold and calculating. Sonny inherited Vito's hot headed and violent side, while Fredo inherited Vito's more gentle side. None of the sons had everything that made Vito who he was.

As a film lover I'd love to see y'all do a bunch of different genres but man do I wanna see Godfather II and Goodfellas reactions (particularly because of the Sopranos actors in the latter). I would also love to see more older movies because I think you might honestly be surprised by, say, rom-coms/screwball comedies from the 30s and 40s (just to pick a random type of movie I love). Not that I'm expecting anything like that, I'm just a little too excited by the prospect of seeing you explore the medium of film more.

WhooooaaaaAAAAAHHHHHH! I thought MAYBE we'd get this between-seasons for The Sopranos, I never predicted a surprise drop.
It would be impossible to overstate how much love I have for this film, so I won't even try. This is one of the very few film adaptations which I say is 100% better than the source material. The book is subpar-to-average, but they managed to distill it into perfection.
The sequel is one of the very few sequels that people recognize as just as good as -- if not better -- than the original. My vote is definitely to make it the next movie you watch.
You can watch Part 3 if you want to, just give it a break before you do.

My biggest fault as a human being is that I really do not like gangster films. I respect the heck out of this film for everything it does in filmmaking and acting as well. I'm sure it's known but this is considered a true hollywood classic and one of the greatest and most influential films of all time.
I think with this film it's easy to see what mob tropes the Sopranos were simultaneously influenced by, but also work to deconstruct and present differently. For instance "They know he's a civilian" gets completely nuked in the Sopranos as there's no pretense at all about some sort of civility in that regard. They are all properly dressed and are more well conducted while mobsters in the Sopranos are portrayed as more brutish and are less glamorized.
Also a GIGANTIC bridge between the Godfather films and Sopranos is "Goodfellas". Which is directly what inspired the style of Sopranos (and also they literally took like half the cast of Goodfellas for the Sopranos and Ray Liotta was originally eyed for Tony Soprano). Less civilized gangsters and less romanticized and more on the everyday mundane aspects mob life. Much more of the downsides of the lifestyle that doesn't involve big hefty downfalls or high peaks (like the literal rise and fall of families and big family revenge), and The Sopranos was influenced by that takes it up to eleven by being even more mundane and about inbetween moments.

Because it's not really about gangsterism. It's about family and legacy and has a hefty shakespearean undercurrent so it's not really going to age or have novelty worn off once you get past the spectacle or mob elements. It's pretty universal and timeless as far as themes go. Also, it's just a great film in terms of filmography and writing and you can appreciate it for it's historical significance. This film is one of the greatest and most influential films of all time and it has even changed how gangsters in real life conducted themselves (as far as a certain type of image or self-perception goes) because it was that big of a cultural phenomenon.

I think a movie like The Godfather is so good that it transcends its genre. I'm actually not a huge fan of gangster movies and so I can understand how LM might have thought they would never watch it. But it is so good that it is one of the best movies ever, not just one of the best gangster movies. So I'm not surprised they liked it as much as they did. Same with The Sopranos. Also, same with Game of Thrones which appealed to people who typically have no interest in fantasy drama.

You guys probably want to get through The Godfather 2 and Goodfellas, and then some other genres, but in time I recommend Heat. It's a crime movie rather than a mafia one but it shares some actors with The Godfather series, and also has some fascinating character work. If you're looking for an older movie, Vertigo by Hitchcock is often considered to be one of the greatest movie ever made. For horror, the double punch of Alien and Aliens is extraordinary and I think you guys would love Sigourney Weaver's character, especially in the second.
