Thanks Veya. What a great reply.

It's pretty easy to connect with cartoon characters if it's well written. Both mediums have their advantages and disadvantages. And this obviously applies to any medium really, like books vs visual content. In animation it's harder to have more nuanced character beats or a specific swing of emotions that actors can do within a split second, look no further than this show or something like succession/mad men. It's why a lot of characterizations in animation tend to be filled with generally bolder traits and less shading in between by comparison. And it makes sense when you think about the budget and time constraints but also the fact that at least for a lot of anime specifically (so not necessarily arcane or pixar stuff) they are adaptions of manga which are comic books, sometimes literally panels lifted straight from the manga which means the limitations carries over. On the other hand, a clear advantage for animated medium as mentioned above, is you can have a more heightened abstract visual expression of various things like say, setting or emotions or action set pieces. And when live action tries to replicate some of the stuff, they use CGI anyways for obvious reasons. It's why I'm incredibly curious as to how they're gonna adapt the later stuff in Three Body Problem. I don't think the celebrity thing for animation is a given though, that depends on who they get for the VA. Like Hailee Steinfeld's voice is pretty noticable for me, let alone some of the recent trends of getting big celebrities for voice roles. And in this show, why James Gandolfini completely disappears into Tony Sopranos for most people is precisely because of how uncelebrity-like he is and he was completely unknown before the part.

Veya

Appreciate the response, thanks. In that case I'll try watching it again sometime soon.

The Josh

3rd episode is when I realized how special the show was. The first 2 episodes I found did a very good job setting up the premise of the show, every single episode after the first 2 had me wired in the whole time.

NovB13

How far did you watch Arcane before you were hooked? I tried watching the first episode recently, because L&M were reacting to it, but I just couldn't get into it. Might give it another go sometime

The Josh

different mediums resonate with different people. i find animation to often be far more compelling than live action because of the exaggerated portrayals of emotions and the endless possibilities for how to creatively depict different scenarios. another appeal is the ease of seeing an animated character more as their own unique entity instead of being attached to the face of a famous actor with dozens of other roles, potentially influencing your perception of the character in the media you’re currently engaged with. this isn’t necessarily better or worse but is a different experience. it’s like asking “how do you connect with characters in novels if there’s no photos of them?” different mediums, different experiences.

Interested to hear your commentary on this episode, which is easily the hardest one to re-watch in the entire show, even if the subject matter only lasts for a minute. Lorraine Bracco doesn't get the recognition she deserves for bringing such a nuanced character like Dr Melfi to life. She was robbed of each of the Emmys she lost out on.

Aidan

Please, more non-anime content. Thanks.

Clay F

Firefly seems dated to me. At least it's only one season.

Clay F

This is hard to watch, but it brings an interesting discussion

Wallas

The answer to your question is quite simple for me. The writing, directing, pacing, animation, music, action, characters, the show structure (3 episode Arcs) etc. are all 10/10. There’s probably recency bias in me saying it’s my new number 1, but I don’t think a show has ever made me feel such a wide range of emotions in just a 40 minute episode. The character animation and dialogue feels so genuine and real that I’d put it right up there with the greatest live actions shows of all time.

NovB13

Yeah, some tough subject matter.

Clay F

This is me exactly: "I subscribed a while ago to watch Band of Brothers, my favorite show of all time. I was pleasantly surprised when you started the Wire and Sopranos, which are right behind Band of Brothers for me." This is not me (but I have not given Arcane or any anime a chance): "However, I binged all of season 1 of Arcane last week, and finished season 2 today. It’s my new #1 show EVER, which I didn’t think was possible." Question: How do you connect with a cartoon character? I ask this in all seriousness because I feel like I may be missing out by refusing to watch reactions to cartoons.

Clay F

Honestly debating if I even wanna rewatch this one

MB

I subscribed a while ago to watch Band of Brothers, my favorite show of all time. I was pleasantly surprised when you started the Wire and Sopranos, which are right behind Band of Brothers for me. However, I binged all of season 1 of Arcane last week, and finished season 2 today. It’s my new #1 show EVER, which I didn’t think was possible. I’ve never been more excited yo watch a show with you two as Arcane, hope you guys can post the rest of the show soon!

NovB13

Maybe the hardest episode to watch just for that one minute. It was the one episode I was somewhat dreading rewatching, despite being one of the best episodes of the series.

Darrach

The depth and complexity the female characters have really makes sense when you find out Mad Men had so many female writers. I’m positive the girls would love the show.

This work for me everytime: 1. If streaming their reaction on a PC or laptop, right click on their reaction video (in Patreon or vimeo) and then click "inspect". 2. Then go to the console tab in the new window that pops up and copy/paste or type in: document.querySelector('video').playbackRate = 0.9591

Clay F

A big +1 for Mad Men. MAD MEN (2007) (7 seasons). RT 94%. IMDb = 8.7 --Best TV Shows all time = Rolling Stone #7, Hollywood Reporter #1 --56 Emmy nominations, won 16 including for Outstanding Drama Series --Golden Globe 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 winner Best TV Series - Drama

Clay F

Josh, thanks for the reply.

Clay F

Yup, although I didnt start watching til season 3 when it was originally airing. I had to go back and catch up on first 2 seasons through the dvds

The Josh

I would be fine with that even though I still hope that they squeeze in Firefly before I am a senior citizen. Anything that isn’t so dark as the non Anime shows they usually watch.

Jason

unfortunately its not, that why we have to push it to monday

LM Reactions

Who did you think I was referring to? Mathew Weiner became executive producer after he became a writer. He wasn't involved with the show at all during the first four seasons.

Veya

Are you talking about when the series originally aired? Mine didn't.

Clay F

interesting info... i was referring to matthew weiner though who is the showrunner of mad men and executive producer on sopranos

Robert

It would be there favourite show ever.

the chosen one

The versions I watched definitely had translations for the Italian and other foreign language scenes.

The Josh

Either way they'd definitely love the show. Top notch character writing

Solomon Wong

I copy this instructions to sync it up, from Ron Choe in the 1x01 episode: 1. Open their video in vimeo instead of playing it directly on Patreon (just click the video title) 2. In Chrome, press F12 to open the Dev tools (or right click - inspect) 3. Click the Console tab 4. Paste the following command and press Enter: document.querySelector('video').playbackRate = 0.9591 5. You'll know this worked if the console then displays 0.9591. This will make LM's video speed match the episode. You can close the Dev Tools panel, you don't need to keep it open. You'll have to run that command for every video.

RubénMO

It's from one of the writers that joined season 5. david chase is still the main architect behind the show and isn't involved in mad men at all. So while mad men is a closer cousin to sopranos than some of the other contemporary dramas it's still gonna be different. They both do have the same' short stories building into a larger whole at the end' structure but that's still pretty broad and a lot of the humor and specifics of the structure and styles are different.

Veya

The last couple episodes for me haven't been syncing up. It seems like it's sped up slightly.

a. tree

i propose mad men next, it was from the guy who did sopranos

Robert

if youre using ms edge you have to run a code snippet in browser inspector and make sure to run it. The code snippet is: document.querySelector('video').playbackRate = 0.9591

Robert

No assigned schedule; always a problem ;)

snaps

i also cant figure it out ><

Gumbot

maybe I'm just fucking dumb but 7 mins in and I can't sync this shit up properly LOL

SlyMorris

You guys are the GOAT

JDU

This episode is so hard to watch

Yarrow

When this series aired, there was no translation of the Italian. Not thought needed because there was adequate context, mannerisms, expressions, etc. for the English-speaking audience to understand the communication adequately -- to get the gist of it without precision. No translation is the typical way historically for older movies and TV series. Sometimes the creator wanted the communication to be vague.

Clay F

Looking very much forward to your discussion for this heavy episode

mundanelotus

if you do switch to us stream let us know :)

Robert

Of the series you are currently reacting to, The Sopranos is by far my favorite. For me, the other series you are currently reacting to are no contest. Thanks for cranking out The Sopranos full reaction today.

Clay F

Is Haikyuu’s full length recorded? Can it not go up tomorrow?
