Your comparison of "having the most compute" for bitcoin to "burning the most gas" in aggregate is pretty close. It's even worse though, because presumably the gas being burned is for something useful, whereas the compute burning energy for bitcoin is specifically, horrendously inefficient and useless to make it expensive to mine. The math they are doing is literal busy work, as if having a parking lot full of idling cars going nowhere was a key part of like, how your bank does credit card processing.
