I'm always fascinated by the whole little story of Richie giving Tony the jacket, because I believe that for this one moment Richie was being 100% sincere. He honestly thought that this was a great gift. If you piece all the details together, Rocco Dimeo was a toughuy that Richie beat up and took the jacket from. Since Richie is willing to talk about it at all and not hiding it in euphemisms, that probably means it was just a fistfight and not an execution. And since Richie is older than Tony, what this means is that it probably happened when Tony was in middle school or high school. So, back when he was a kid Tony probably thought the jacket was the coolest thing ever and that Richie was the toughest guy he knew and the kind of guy he wanted to be like when he grew up. And we've seen throughout this entire season that Richie still thinks of Tony as "a kid". Like his kid brother's friend. So when Richie wants to give Tony a personal, heartfelt gift, he gives him the very thing that Tony idolized back when he actually was a kid. Except Tony's not a kid anymore, and he doesn't look up to Richie anymore, so at first Tony is just confused, and then kinda annoyed at the big deal Richie is making over nothing. If a friend gave me a pair of his old pants and said "I bought these pants after I graduated college!" I'd wonder that the hell was going on. They probably mean an awful lot to my friend, but there's no emotional connect at all on my end. Tony doesn't think anything of giving away the jacket because it's just a weird pass-off. It wasn't even a deliberate slight. But to Richie, who thought he was giving Tony something of deep personal significance, it's like throwing out a family heirloom.

"What's Adriana's story gonna be, I'm so curious." You have no idea what's coming. Enjoy!!

Jr said the guy who had the jacket died from Alzheimer’s shortly after. So I don’t think Richie beat up someone that tough.

Everyone loves the real Chris inside.

There is very few people you can absolutely defend on this show.

Somewhat amused at the pearl-clutching over Carmela’s actions here. Yeah it would have been deeply disappointing to see her sabotage her daughter like that, but it’s not any worse than the status quo: abetting and even facilitating Tony’s criminal lifestyle, of which outright murder is a part. I suppose it’s still shocking because of what Milena said: this I would actively hurt her child, which is where Carmela and Tony both typically draw the line.

I think they may need to look at their subtitle settings. That line of dialogue was subtitled in every other version of the show that I've watched. It's not too crucial here but I think there are some scenes in the future where the subtitles are a must.

I don't think Carmela was ever a top student like Meadow. Her reaction to AJ's turn last episode was the same as Tony's - confusion, annoyance. Meadow's the one who had to tell them 'this is what education gives you'. Could be wrong but I think Melfi sees Tony's actions as positive because they are honest, not because she has a rose coloured view of him. He isn't hiding his decisions from himself or Meadow. That allows them both to examine how they feel about those decisions more honestly. I really enjoyed this episode. Tony, Richie and even Carmela all flex their power here, use it in ways they feel are right, justifying it to themselves. They all feel they have a case within their own view of what's right and fair. They're all wildly different of course but there is that similar thread of 'why shouldn't I do this?'

I've been waiting for your reaction to this episode's therapy session ever since you two discussed it back in episode 6. I do think that it's interesting to see how Tony seems disgusted at Melfi's implication that he did something "noble". Instead of being happy that he did the right thing for once, he wants Melfi to tell him that he did something shitty so he can feel unhappy and he can have that self-pity thing. Almost as if he enjoys being miserable sometimes. Sounds familiar... I'm happy you girls also see things from Richie's perspective too. Tony once again is breaking the mafia mold by going against another made man, and one in his own family at that. Richie says how it really is, "Maybe while I'm over there I could fuck his wife." Richie is an old school made guy, he's got a license to do whatever he damn well pleases as long as it's not against another made guy. Doesn't mean he's right to do that kind of thing but that's just how it is in the mob. Carmela can be a gangster too when it comes to college lol. With these types of shows, I'm glad to have the "criminal's wife" character with their own subplot, and Carmela's story is always as deep and interesting as Tony's.

Remembering the world as it was before is a throughline for his character and for others in the show to varying degrees. It's even alluded to in the opening song: "the world turns upside down". He's similar to Tony in some ways in that they both view the past with rose-tinted glasses and have a stubbornness towards it but his is more extreme because he was in prison with time freezing for him.

Veya

I’d rather have them take longer breaks if it means we’re gonna get a better show

I love how invested ye both are in Carmela's story. Even ye just being pumped to see her sitting in the kitchen well dressed, not doing much 😂 When I watched this when I was younger I often overlooked what a great character she was. Loving these reactions, ye have such a great understanding of the characters already.

...now thats a hit!

i think richie was in prison for so long (20 years i think), it would make sense that all he remembers of the world was just as it was 20 years before, and that jacket he probably fixated on his whole life. Now he's back in the mix and there's such a distance between how things are now and how it was back then. Tony tries to be respectful, and Richie has a lot of insecurity and overplays his hand a lot, but they try to respect him because when a guy goes away and doesn't rat it's like a decorated soldier in their culture.

Robert

perfect discussion about carmela in the review, can't wait to see you guys find out where this all goes

ashton

The show knows how to structure it’s seasons. It was done intentionally to have this episode follow the last one considering the endings of both episodes and this season was also deliberately muted in terms of violence compared to the first half of the first season.

Veya

We see another example of tony’s personality getting in the way of the therapy here. There is one small breakthrough but then when melfi tried to push further he shuts it down. Also great discussion about carmela. And a key to her character was already presented to viewers all the way in the college episode with her conversation with the priest.

Veya

Random fact: At a 43 minute run time, this episode is the shortest episode of the entire show.

I've definitely known a couple that acted like this. It's such a sad thing to see.

Marcus Cato

It's the episode with THE JACKET!!! Seriously, to me the jacket represents how unbelievably childish these guys are. Richie really is that upset about the jacket. I read somewhere that abused people fail to develop emotionally past the point of childhood due to abuse, and I'm convinced pretty much all these characters suffered abuse on some level. Case in point: Tony resorting to the silent treatment in Melfi's office: "I'll sit here but I got nuthin' to say!"

Marcus Cato

Good timing because the new severance trailer dropped like a day ago lol. These new shows take waaay too long breaks now.

Veya

Years ago I had a flatmate who was in a very toxic relationship with a guy. She would literally run from her bedroom in fear that he would hit her, and yet a few days later, they would be back together again. And the cycle repeated over and over. I'm not saying Chris and Adriana's relationship is that damaging, but unfortunately it is an example of so many people who struggle to break free of toxic relationships.

Damien Fenton

Adriana’s mother looking so powerless hurts Tony has some nerve to be upset that Chris was shot after pushing him into this life. In season 1 it’s mentioned twice that Chris’s mom doesn’t want him to be in the mob, he can’t live without Tony’s approval

Ras Kass - Van Gogh is from season three, methinks. Another one to add to your rotation kind being

Those two guys have got to be the biggest clowns in the series. I'm surprised they didn't manage to shoot themselves!
