I just realized that Chris doesn't misgender the trans woman, even when telling people about the hate crime done to her as a funny story

Yarrow

The Milena Cheese, cheers joke is hilarious even though I don't know Serbian. I am going to say sir/seer (don't even know how to type it) whenever I am toasting or taking a picture.

Karabo

You can be a mob boss while still looking out for those close to you.

Cole

100% Chris and David’s outcomes both are on them. They made the choices that got them where they are, but Tony as Chris father basically and as David’s friend could’ve done more to help them.

Cole

He also included a father character who is going blind and doesn’t want his son to do crime

space colon

The things you pointed out is him acting like a mob boss. Wich is what he is, so i think most people expected that behavior because that is who we are watching

BigJo H

I love how they keep telling Pussy's wife to divorce as if that's a realistic option for a mob wife. 😂

BNJ

but one of the main points of Sopranos is to show that at the end of the day everything is a consequence of your actions and decisions (Melfi makes this clear in the therapy sessions). Tony gave David countless opportunities not to play and gave Chris the possibility to decide what he wants, obviously it can be questionable how he dealt with both situations but even so they were choices made by David and Chris. In the same way that Tony is a victim of his parents, but at the end of the day it is his choice to be who he is.

I loved this episode and was surprised at the lukewarm reaction to it online haha. AJ's storyline here will inform his character trajectory moving forward, and I do find it interesting that you girls caught up to the fact that AJ and Tony sounds similar in a way. We're gonna see that develop more in the future.

IanJ

Ya exactly. Most people that go to therapy go there in search of peace of mind, to find out who they really are or to better themselves as a social being etc. But for Tony or someone with his mentality, in my opinion it seems he's only really there to solve a logistical issue with the running of his business. He can't run his gang with an iron fist or with impunity, if he keeps having these bouts of extreme anxiety and panic. Its a catch 22 basically, he can't really solve the issue if everything he has to do is exacerbating that feeling of unease and impending doom.

Fuckin' Internet.

This is what I think every time Tony is in therapy. No matter what progress they make, after the session he’ll just go back to being a gangster removing any of that progress that was made. The choices each of these characters make have boxed them into the their current miserable situations. You can’t get mentally healthier or happier if your days are spent murdering and stealing, and this is something Tony doesn’t get. He wants to have his cake and eat it too.

Cole

I think up till this point in the show, we see a few glimpses of the characters searching for real purpose or meaning in their lives but coming to the realization that they're basically stuck. They're in the mafia and surrounded by people that are actually incapable of nurturing that breakthrough in any real way, because to do that they'd have to really question their life too. Ultimately everyone they know being in the mafia or being a direct beneficiary of that lifestyle, have no real way of transcending that life once they're in it. Any moment of clarity or really opening up to someone is immediately shot down to maintain their cushy lifestyle and the status quo. Once you join the mafia and make that oath, any other option you had is gone. Unless you're willing to give up everything you have and rat out everyone you love.

pucchiacchia means litterally pussy

I might be alone, but I hate Tony so much rn. In the last episode he let his friend who clearly has a problem, gamble at his game when he could’ve easily not let him and kicked him out, then threatens him when he doesn’t have the money Tony knew he wouldn’t have. And in this episode he sees Chris going through very similar stuff he goes through himself and instead of helping he gives him an ultimatum that will force him on the self destructive path his own father forced him on.

Cole

I didn't like Chris in this episode

Wallas

To AJ: To counter what your grandmother said, I think there's no such thing as nothing and there's no such thing as being alone either. Don't be tricked into thinking that because no people are around you that you're alone. Don't let silly, utilitarian maths trick you into believing there is such a thing as zero/0 being literal. Death, being dead, is some kind of strange, ongoing, recycling process. "Dead" things are literally in you right now..a percentage of what makes you YOU is, in a sense, dying or "dead" already. "You are there somewhere alive somewhere vast stretch of time then it's over you are there no more alive no more than again you are there again alive again it wasn't over an error you begin again all over more or less in the same place or in another as when another image above in the light you come to in hospital in the dark" ...but finding purpose and meaning is another thing entirely.

Everyone in this kind of business is a horrible human being, Chris wouldn't be much different (and still manages to be less than others) Tony is the greatest example of the show, I absolutely love this guy and he's my favorite character in the entire history of TV, but he's a son of a bitch as a person. I feel like it's almost a challenge from David Chase to try to make the audience hate Tony and 99% failed miserably lol In Sopranos I had to learn to separate and ignore MANY morally unacceptable things

ashton

I personally love AJ's storyline, Meadow too. I think it's because we met them when they were kids and throughout the seasons I saw them grow up, and they are two people who didn't ask to be born into this mafia world so I feel very protective of these kids.

ashton

Something I've always said is that AJ is the one who never had a chance. He's not as naturally smart as Meadow, who could theoretically support herself in a career and get out of her parent's control. He's not overly aggressive and mean, which are negative traits to be a well-adjusted person but could lead to success in his father's line of work. He's got no potential in either following in his father's footsteps or breaking out of that life. If he had real support and guidance he could still make his way in life, but instead he has....this.

You have to take everything in context. Yes, in a normal world, Chris is a terrible boyfriend. In the Sopranos world, he's actually one of the better ones. Compare him to how all the other characters treat their wives. Its actually worse. Chris is torn between wanting to be a respected gangster and wanting to be more, and that struggle tears him apart.

Farbod

Kid went to the same island as walt in lost between season 1 and 2.

Veya

Hard agree. Chris definitely sees marriage to Adriana as a future trapped in the mob life

space colon

I feel like Chris is really projecting himself as this tough guy asshole after breaking down at the theatre group. I didn't really enjoy his storyline because of that, although it is well written. He's just very unlikeable, and Jon and Amy are very shallow and transparently trying to use him. Also a d-girl is a development girl, basically a way of saying she's unimportant. That's why she's like 'I'm a vice president actually'. Love AJ's storyline though.

Mark M

It’s an obvious connection but I like the small detail of Chris’ leading man being said to be at a crossroads when Chris comes to the biggest crossroads of his life

Jay Craig

So many of the characters are being gaslit or gaslighting others into accepting absurd rules and beliefs and ultimatums that make their lives worse. They’re all brainwashed It’s really fitting that Chris has a fling with a Jewish studio VP, someone who’s the opposite of Adriana and most of the Catholic women he’s spent his life around. She has a career, an education and dresses in business attire, she’s an escapist fantasy for him not just because of his love of film but also because she’s not connected to the mob We see Chris sit down for dinner with Tony and Carmela and the minute marriage is brought up Chris storms off. He can’t see Adriana as a person deserving of love and respect, he sees her as a tether to his miserable meaningless life under Tony Instead of going to AJ’s confirmation (a Catholic service for the son Tony actually cares about), Chris confronts Amy for using him. Him telling her “I really liked* you” parallels a similar scene last season with Adriana except in that scene he was the one crushing Adriana’s dreams, saying he wouldn’t pay for her to produce the band

space colon

in hollywood during this time i guess the studios and industry was very obsessed with the mob and getting authentic stories, pretty much based on the success of the sopranos, haha. So, it's sort of building a story line with Chris based on sopranos within the show.

Robert

Starts with an “R”? I think it’s a great character. Kind of reminds me of a similar character in Goodfellas.

Veya

Just as a warning this show does mention things at times just because as a red herring and other times it does play out (sometimes waaaay down the line) so it’s gonna depend on how much of the smaller things you can remember especially the more mundane stuff. The ‘being trapped’ throughline of the the season continues here as does the deconstruction of loyalty. Livia and Melfi also showcases two different approaches to the philosophical question posed in the episode. And for people who have watched the entire show: there’s also a very pivotal scene here that i forgot came this early in the show’s run, without getting into what specifically. But man it reminded me of the last part of the show.

Veya

wtf? i'm finishing s1... how much did this kid grow?

sand_fl

I've moved onto season 3 because I wasn't patient enough to keep pace with LM. There is a character in season 3 who I think they are going to despise.

Damien Fenton

Great video as always. Cheese :)
