2024-09-29 19:00:36 +0000 UTCIt's not so much that the vocabulary is complicated(don't get me wrong, there are definitely uncommon words used) I just think that the way sentences are structured during those time periods are confusing to those without a very strong command of the English language. Words are qualified and arranged in ways that don't easily fill the reader/listener with context

2024-09-25 18:49:25 +0000 UTCUsing big words in sentences that don't really make sense is something that 19th/20th century religions, specifically New Age ones do on a constant basis, because it's the easiest way to make gullible individuals conform and get them to believe in whatever you want them to believe as a means of indoctrinating them. The methods are always the same, only the words change. You already alluded to the fact that the whole Lumon Industries feels like a giant cult, and it's the leading theory amongst Severance fans as well. The show hints at it pretty strongly, so it's not surprising whatsoever, but the added twist of people having no memory once they leave that "cult" does pose the big question about what it is exactly they do there.

They always try to justify their fortune and power with some bullshit story: their diet, their dedication, their cleverness. The secret is that they got started with their idea when they were 12, they don't drink coffee until the afternoon, they've invented a system to figure out what someone wants in life. They think you hear this story and you're impressed and want to follow them, but all it does is start a debate about which Batman villain they sound like. I feel like I've been handed a bingo card at an all hands meeting before, it's that close...

I think you even made a link in the discussion, that I hadn't made when I watched this, when you referred back to the painting when talking about the tempers.
