Haikyuu!! 1x18 Reaction

Perfect explanation, thanks!

Yoko

There were Spring Volleyball Nationals on last week of March until 2010 every year but now they moved to January since many high schools in Japan also have graduation ceremony at the same week (so some of them may not be a high school student anymore technically). Students may want to focus on college preparation during winter, or some professional teams want to recruit them right after their graduation starting April. Therefore, the tournament moved to January and but still people call as "the Spring tournament". If 3rd year students surely know to pursue volleyball career, then they will join January tournament, but I would say only handful people.

At about 4 minutes and 20 seconds in episode 14, UKAI said that Karasuno lost 2-0 to Date Tech in the Prefectural public tournament last march.

Arthur

oh yeah you're right! my bad

PI

Karasuno lost against Dateko in the Spring preliminaries. They never played against Tokonami before.

Sooo...I did some research just now, but take this with a grain of salt as my understanding of this comes mostly from anime and Haikyuu :) The school year in Japan takes place from April to March of the following year, with most schools adopting a 3 semester system. The school year goes like this: 1st Semester (April - July) Summer break (end of July - end of August) 2nd Semester (September - December) Winter break (end of December - beginning of January) Semester 3 (January - March) Spring break (end of March - beginning of April) There are two national tournaments per school year, the Interhigh and Spring high tournaments. Rn, our guys are playing in the Interhigh preliminaries (May - June), which leads to the Interhigh nationals (early August). This same school year will be the Spring High preliminaries (late October - early November) and Spring High nationals (early January). Entrance exams for universities are held from January to March, so the preceding months are a crucial period for 3rd years planning to attend university to focus on studying. That’s why it is common for them to step down after interhigh, making it their last chance to play in high school. And, that is what the Dateko 3rd years are referring to. So, technically, they do have one more chance to play in the Spring high if they choose to, but apparently that is unlikely the case unless they are from a powerhouse school or intend to pursue volleyball beyond high school. As for when Karasuno lost against Dateko, I believe that was during the previous year Interhigh preliminaries. They lost, Asahi left the team (sad boi), Noya also left the team (angy boi) and then later in the spring preliminaries of that school year, with Noya and Asahi absent, Karasuno lost against Tokonami. :( Anyone feel free to correct me if I said anything wrong!

Our poor babyyyyy! Hinata would sit next to him~

ginabella

sad fact about Aone (white hair dude), when he sits down on the train, no one ever sits near him ): Furudate just gave us that information to torture us

You have to remember that Japan has over 125 million inhabitants. Japan has 47 districts, but each district has a massive number of inhabitants. The tournament in each district is long. We're still in Block A in the Inter-High preliminary rounds, we're not even close to being through the tournament yet. I think they have to win 7 games in row to win the preliminaries. But the next game is the Block A final against Aoba Johsai: https://imgur.com/a/42BR3KS

Robert H.

It's relatable. I'm curious to see what their reaction against Aoba Johsai will be. :D

Robert H.

I like to describe their schedule as chaotically stable. We don't know what's coming when, but at the end of the month we had got exactly what we expected.

Robert H.

Milena pissed for Suga not playing is so adorable lol.

Karabo

You guys said it as a joke but for real, third years don't generally do the Spring Tournament because they have to study for their exams. It's very serious in Japan.

Karabo

There are two national high school volleyball tournaments in Japan. One is the National High School Athletic Meet, called "Inter-High", and the other is the High School Volleyball Natioal Championship Tournament, called "HARUKO". The Inter-High is held every July and August in a certain prefecture. The Inter-High features not only volleyball but also various other sports, example for football, baseball, swiming etc. Only one representative from each prefecture may participate. There are 47 prefectures in Japan, so 47 high schools is selected. Preliminary rounds are held in each prefecture in May or June to select the representative. Karasuno High School participates in the preliminaries for Inter-High in S1. HARUKO is held every January in Tokyo. The number of representatives from each prefecture will vary depending on the number of high schools in each prefecture. In Tokyo prefecture, three representatives is selected. In Hokkaido prefecture, Osaka prefecture and Kanagawa prefecture, two representatives is selected, and only one representative is selected in each of the other prefectures. Karasuno High School belongs to Miyagi Prefecture, so they will compete for one representative. In Japan, the school year starts in April and ends in March. So university entrance exams take place from January to March. Accrdingly, it is common for students in their final year to retire from club activities in the summer and start preparing for their university entrance exams. Therefore, for final year students, participating to HARUKO is risky.

Thanks for your reply! I'll continue to enjoy watching your videos!

Thank you for this I think this is the first time I've seen a Japanese person clarify and confirm what most people presume.

carl houlihan

ah okay, from what i’ve seen they were posting on sunday, tuesday, and thursdays but you’re right i don’t think i’ve seen anything official out

Juniper

i dont think there is a consistent schedule. except for frieren fridays. and 1-2 episodes of haikyu/sopranos a week

T T T

im not sure if i missed it but did the haikyuu release schedule change?

Juniper

Hello! I'm a Japanese who always enjoys watching you guys! Thank you for your fun content! I'm using a translator, so I'm not sure if the translation is correct, but I thought I'd send you a message to let you know about Japanese schools. I love Haikyuu too. The first school year in Japanese schools starts in April, unlike in other countries. A school year runs from April to March of the following year. Not only volleyball, but other club activities also have inter-high school preliminaries in June. Since regular high school students have to take university entrance exams, most third-year students retire at this inter-high school, except for those from strong schools. In January, volleyball has a special championship called the "Spring High School Volleyball Championship," which is attracting attention even in Japan. The preliminaries for this championship begin in September. This was a long message, but I hope it helps you with your viewing!

Yuki tsujihara

Someone else can expand on this, but basically it’s pretty common for third-years to stop attending club activities toward the end of their year in order to focus on studies and to prepare for college entrance exams. All of my understanding comes from anime, so I could easily be wrong

RPSiege

please nobody confirm or deny anything LOL. Please let them find out in due time.

Harfie

the realization that the 3rd years won't be around forever.
