The Sopranos 1x11 Reaction

The Sopranos 1x11 Reaction

Comments

I know you've mentioned on a few occasions that you haven't seen The Godfather and don't plan to see it. However, in my opinion, a lot of storylines and references would become far easier for you to work out if you watch the films. A reaction video would be needed but even without it, you can watch it in private and then start season 2 of The Sopranos. It will help you.

Karan Verma

I love the next episode so much

cheech

Yeah to me he seemed really suspicious

BigJo H

Jimmy got out of jail pretty quick. He visited Tony right after leaving jail. Rather than talking like a normal human, he immediately started talking about details of a job that Tony was involved in, asking him specific questions, which if answered, could implicate Tony. It was weird. Tony had legit reasons to be concerned

windyMelon

so for us outside of this world these are very understandable reasons, but they don't care if it was for your family or not

ashton

Coming back here because I just watched the review, in the mafia the betrayal of being an informant is very big, even if you love him deeply (like Tony in relation to Pussy) it is something that does not matter much because there is an oath when you enter

ashton

Lmaooooo good one

Jack SV

I can't believe they didn't laugh at that, that shit had me in stitches! 😂

Tony: "I can't find pussy anywhere" Me: Join the club

Shivering King Banana

It's cute how when Tony gets really emotional he has a little bit of a lisp.

Shivering King Banana

Milena: Is this Pussy? Me: It's a house full of pussy.

Shivering King Banana

Just because his best friend is named Pussy doesn't mean they're fucking. JK that's just what it made me think when you said cheating.

Shivering King Banana

Milena saying pussy was a bit shocking.

Shivering King Banana

Cat scans, dog scans, you name it

One of the things this show does well is flipping the switch between these characters feeling bumbling/funny and then dangerous and terrible. It's a juxtaposition that a lot of people were drawn to in the beginning and it deepened over time.

Veya

Your best friend might be cheating on you, your uncle is planning to kill you, another friend just killed himself, your mother hates you I would pay for your therapy myself, Tony.

ashton

I mean there was a reference to it this very episode lol. The horn paulie honked was the godfather theme right? There's one particular episode in the next season, and one in the very last season that would be a bit richer if they actually have watched the films.

Veya

This was a great episode and one of the better ones from the first season. Besides starting to thread things that are going reverberate throughout the rest of the series, it had more subtext than the past couple of episodes. The AV Club review for this episode (her reviews are very good in general but I don't recommend for first time watchers, at least these early ones) had a good excerpt: ""The Sopranos is excellent at illuminating that moment when life ceases to be something you live and becomes something that lives you, and this episode is filled with moments like that. The slow, dawning realization of what's going on on Pussy's face in the locker room. The look in Tony's eyes as Jimmy peppers him with questions. The way Vin doesn't even look down as he climbs the side of that bridge. There's an inevitability to this episode that simply works."" idk if links are allowed but if anyone wants to read them just google Av Club Sopranos and the episode title. Again, not recommended if you are watching for the first time. It also mentions that the more you're stuck in a certain worldview, the harder it is to pull out. We see Livia spent the entire season complaining about how Tony is treating her, despite people trying to convince her otherwise and she basically felt cornered and insulted enough until she basically goads Junior into drastic measures. We also see Makazian in a terrible mental state and spiraling until he feels he has no real option (even though Tony tries to point out afterwards it may not have been the end of the world). It's interesting that he saw Tony as being reliable and said Tony liked him, when every interaction we've seen of them has suggested otherwise. The type of ambiguity in this episode and ambiguity of life in general, is also a consistent throughline for the series. Sopranos Autopsy mentions this (also don't recommend that one for first time watchers). David Chase has always liked that things don't always have a straight answer or sometimes not even an answer at all. On this show, sometimes they do, sometimes they won't. It's more life-like.

Veya

Hey that was my comment you mentioned at the start! Woooooooo! I feel famous! I don't like to give anybody an excuse that they 'have' to do something evil, but in this instance Junior is correct that he 'has' to respond. Learning that his own subordinates are working behind his back has only one response in this world. His options are either let it go (Essentially retire as the boss and admit that he's a puppet) or seek retribution. Livia KNEW that when she told Junior, so this is where we can say that she is DELIBERATELY trying to get her son killed. There was no other outcome here for these characters. Junior might seem bumbling, but remember that we've already seen him order one death since becoming the Boss, and we know that he's been in this world for his entire life. You can't dismiss somebody like that just because they're old now.

“The Wire, it’s fucking Jimmy!” Mcnulty’s still catching strays smh Tony’s honestly more physically affectionate with the men he loves than the Lord of the Rings men are with one another

You two touched on it briefly, but the big change from the "glory days" of the mafia re: mandatory minimum sentencing is in regard to drug trafficking, specifically involving heroin. The threat of life in prison turned relatively toothless prosecution into a real risk for members of the mob, and in turn led to more cases of criminals turning informant. All of which is to the say that, when Makazian says that Pussy was moving heroin to pay for his kid's college, it makes sense that it would get Tony's attention. On the psychology side of things this week, you're right that the show is drawing parallels between Makazian and Tony for the viewer -- and very right that Tony himself actually seems interested in that parallel. Tony's relationship with psychology is still in its early stages, but he does seem to be using the people around him as test cases for how effective it can be and/or if it can really help him (both professionally and emotionally). Very excited for the next episode, which imo is the first fully mature The Sopranos. Plenty of these first episodes are great, but the show is definitely still finding its footing. Next up is the show operating at the height of its powers, and exploring what makes it truly unique among the pantheon tv dramas.

Mike

I can’t wait next week for the season finale lol. Now.. I feel Jimmy was asking too many questions plus like Tony mentioned.. how is he out in bailed when he was charge with conspiracy..(?) What I love about this episode is how conflicted is Tony with the idea that Pussy(his long time friend) could potentially be the rat. Also his paranoia and most likely his temper can make him act out of character sometimes.. overall I love the setup this episode does for the other upcoming episodes. Also, Tony’s mom definitely deserves to be on that list of most hated TV characters lol

Jack SV

It also took a cold turn in Arizona today. After 113 straight days above 100 degrees, today was only 95! Time to break out the jacket.

Michael M

You know who had an arc? Noah.

Silly winks to the movies aside -- Paulie's car horn! -- I think the way this show exists in conversation with The Godfather and "classical era" 40s & 50s mafia representation in the media makes GF I & II essential companion texts to The Sopranos. And they're just amazing movies besides. They should 100% watch before starting Season 2, even if they don't do reactions.

Mike

Agreed 100%

TheBrandonator69

I'm really glad they are watching the final 3 of the season together because they go really well together. They aren't as episodic as the previous two.

Damien Fenton

I watched it last week and they really would. A reaction might not work cuz they are really long but even just watching them on their own time I think they would enjoy it a lot.

Cole

it was 80€ at the merch stand when i went to the concert, idk if it was the same price in all concerts or even at the online store. but it's the typical hoodie that starts to shred the on the inside when you wash it.

sand_fl

...how much is it. it's ok, you can tell me

Isaac

I watched The Godfather yesterday and it really is exactly the type of story LM loves to watch. Michael's arc, probably the greatest in cinema history, is perfect for them. Maybe between seasons 1 and 2 of The Sopranos they might consider it. They'll be able to get a lot of the references too that The Sopranos make (some obvious, some subtle).

Damien Fenton

currently wearing the same taylor swift hoodie and i must say it's way too pricey given it's quality 🙃🙃 but also i'm happy it's cold enough to wear hoodies again, i kinda hate summer 💀
