Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End 1x12 Reaction

it’s friday and it’s the best episode so far

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End 1x12 Reaction

Comments

The image you talk about after the episode, with Frieren looking at Himmel, is really interesting. I assume you mean the image of Himmel turning in a sort of slow motion shot, against the blue sky background. It reminds me very strongly of a scene from the very first episode. There's a very similar shot of Frieren as Himmel is saying, if I remember correctly, "You are always there in those beautiful memories." It's an image that stuck in my mind because Frieren looks so beautiful in those frames and I always thought it was showing us how Himmel sees Frieren. He's looking up to her and she's smiling as if she hasn't a care in the world. She looks so beautiful. I think that image of Frieren in the first episode shows how Himmel saw her and the image of Himmel in this episode shows how Frieren saw Himmel. The sad difference is that Frieren is only just now realising that she saw Himmel that way... or at least, she's just beginning to. It's the main driving force behind this new adventure she's on: she wants to understand what the party of heroes really meant to her. She's always pleased when she thinks that she has changed in some way, like when the einsam showed her an image of Himmel instead of the image of Flamme she expected to see. It always makes me happy but there's also a sadness in the background because she's realising it all after Himmel and Heiter have already died and gone. What will she do if she comes to realise she was really in love with Himmel and she missed her chance for that kind of a relationship? It scares me. It's such a strange feeling: I want her to realise that she loved Himmel... but not until I'm right there so I can hug her and protect her somehow. It's such an irrational feeling to have for a fictional cartoon character but this show is so beautiful it just makes me stupid lol I'm so happy to watch this show with you two. You make it even better, and I didn't think that was possible. Perhaps you are each my Fern smiling at a sunrise.

I agree with you girls. This anime is one of the best! It’s not just battles it’s wonderful characters and stories. I think I’ve cried in every episode. Such a beautiful cast of characters who are funny, heroic and caring. Frieren like you said was alone for so long that she didn’t appreciate or realize she loved Himmel until now after he is gone. It teaches all of us a valuable lesson to appreciate the people you love now and live in the present because one day they will be gone. Milena saying this episode healed something in me was so heartfelt and touching to me. I think this anime is healing something in all of us. Friday Frieren is the best part of my week! Thanks girls!

There are some things sprinkled through the story that seem to be foreshadowing someone (not saying who) is going to pull the sword, but given other things that are foreshadowed and themes of the show, its not going to be used in a way that diminishes Himmel, but the opposite. Its going to make your point even more poignant. Definitely a theme I havent seen explored very often in stories: who is the real hero, the one who is destined to be a hero, or the one who chooses to be a hero?

Jonathan H

Lmao Robert, the heaven line is still good tho

HenryM

Did that little girl just say "I'm hella grateful"... who translated this Eric Cartman?

Shivering King Banana

when Frieren said "future generation romanticizes heroes to the point where their original nature disappear", this one is such a remarkable line to me. people in the future may compare him or the Heroes party to some of the greats, devalue his works, even boost or strip him the title as one of the best (some of the people they met along the way can't even recognize Frieren so far), but to Frieren, all she ever remembered are some of his most precious memories next to them - Himmel's humorous side, Heiter always being a drunkard, the Eisen that will put up to their bs no matter what.

halfeldian

now we know why Stark don't believe in his own strengths, since episode 6 :') and the touching part of him slowly realizing there's actually people giving him 'birthday presents' all this time, with a roller coaster emotion of that potion (that appeared in episode 3, when Fern said Frieren always buy useless things) ... makes up for this as one of my favorites of cour 1 and season 1 as a whole too. btw that frieren smug face 'just give this kinda thing to men and they will be thrilled' was a funny phase, everyone else is just editing that potion to something they love.

halfeldian

Oops. I missed the "of the episode" part :D

Robert H.

Yeah I knew it was a few months difference either direction. Manga info I assume?

Teddy S

Trying to see if there are any episodes we wouldn't cry

Mra Keung

I've been waiting for you two to jump on the Fern/Stark train, and I'm happy to see how fully you've done so!

cosmotron

Fern is younger than Stark. That’s why she calls him “Mr. Stark.” They are close in age, though.

Joe Tucker

It's funny, when you said Fern is jealous because Stark is offering to carry Frieren I had to really think about which way you meant it because it works both ways.

Teddy S

Checked multiple episodes and wrote out Fern and Starks ages last week only for them to outright state it in this one, had totally forgot. So Stark is was 17, and by my last estimation Fern was close to 18 by 4 months is she hadn't already turned last episode. By this episode it's another official year since the last episode which might mean Fern is the older of the two by a estimation of some months if Stark just turned 18. Just find that interesting for some reason.

Teddy S

To add to this. Remember the replica sword that was in his funeral in Episode 1. It looked shiny and beautiful. It was the sword that Himmel used to defeat the Demon King. Now look at the ''Real Hero Sword'', it's just a rusty sword that's only attracting monsters and causing problems to its people. Yeah, what a ''hero sword'' am I right? Like you said, pulling the sword would defeat the point the show is trying to make. It's pointless. You want proof that Stark is a true warrior? Big Borger.

Lixien

ironic how the real hero’s sword just attracts monsters and puts the nearby town in danger whereas the fake one saved the realm. this series really relishes in subverting fantasy tropes in a thoughtful way. (and theres still plenty to look forward to too!)

Sebastian

Fern was raised by a priest, and thats why Kraft called her "pious", which means very proper and religion-oriented. So it would make sense that seeing any impropriety from Stark would cause her to call him perv. Same goes for the "vulgar potion" that Frieren bought.

ODIS

was that even in this episode though

Danny

I CRY EVERYTIME

Arcturus

Nah, my favorite statement is the one about the existence of heaven. Such a beautiful scene and completely free of religion.

Robert H.

Yeah exactly Robert that’s my feeling. No shade against the second cour I did enjoy it.

The big story arc at the end is still a 9.9/10, but these episodic stories are perfect.

Robert H.

i just got out, will do what i can. if i get ran over... not the end of the world, paid medical leave 😂😂 i survived getting ran over when i was like 12, i think i can manage surviving now too.

I am glad they understood a lot of the emotions behind this episode though. Im not trying to be rude its just many people don't understand the way this episode is trying to be portrayed and focus on "pulling the hero sword" way too much. Stark was never going to try to pull it. He is a warrior and he looks up to Himmel quite a lot.

L.C.

Even if you didn't like the big arc in the last few episodes quite as much as the rest of the episodes beforehand don't worry we still have even more peak to come in the next season. A lot of peak to adapt into the next season of the anime. Plenty of chapters to do an entire next season. :)

L.C.

So many people apparently get this episode confused. Stark has nothing to do with the "hero sword". He wouldn't mess with it. That would be pointless. Himmel is THE HERO. Stark is a warrior that looks up to Himmel and what he has done. Its never clarified but you can always just make certain assumptions like no one is ever meant to pull the "hero sword". Its the people who still push forward even if fate is telling you that you can't do it. Its the person who would try to pull the sword that will face fate knowing that they couldn't pull the sword but still try to be a hero anyways. Himmel made the "fake hero sword" into the REAL hero sword because it was the sword he wielded since he himself was the REAL hero. Stark looked at the hero sword and had flashbacks because he saw his older brother as a hero. His older brother was his hero back when he was a kid. Stark pulling the sword would sort of make the entire series be completely different and in my opinion it would have been a terrible choice to make for the series.

L.C.

I wouldn't mind if you upload the reaction to episodes 13 to 17 all at once and then pause Frieren for 4 weeks. :D

Robert H.

Seen this anime at least 5 times and I've somehow never caught that, thank you

SlippinGymy

Stark and Fern's chemistry is one of my favorite things ever, from the moment I felt that there was something possibly starting between them I knew I wanted it to be the slowest burn in the history of slowburns

Aris

"Everyone who works hard is a warrior" my favorite line of the episode. Thank you for the upload girls, you are true warriors

HenryM

My favourite thing about this episode is they make you understand what the white cloaks mean to the warriors. And yet you see Stark's brother crouch down and let his cloak get absolutely muddy, just to talk to Stark. My heart ❤️😭😭😭

atmdboss

Just a small detail to point out, In the beginning we learn that Heiter and Himmel were friends in an orphanage since they were kids. Which means Heiter was probably the most devastated alongside Frieren when Himmel died.

Jay

True.

Robert H.

Excuse me they are all perfect

My Toasty Toast

For me it's the next 5 episodes. They are just too good.

Robert H.

It's mentioned in practically every comment section for the episode 12 reaction, so you get it too. The entire hero group is flawed. A “Fake” Hero, a “Corrupt” Preast, a “Cowardly” Warrior and a “Disgraceful” Mage. It's a sweet detail.

Robert H.

The run of four episodes from this point was to me the peak of the show

Jay Craig

This is totally unrelated, but last night I was rewatching some of your Black Sails reactions for the vibes and I have to ask, did either of you try to read treasure island or watch any of the movies? I did as part of the healing process to ending one of my favorite shows ever, I’m imagining probably not but figured I’d ask

My Toasty Toast

Happy Frieren's Friday!

refo44

Told you. Best episodic story arc :D

Robert H.

Happy Frieren Friday!!

Jason Parker
