People keep saying it's "refreshing" (which it may be for recent years where we got a lot of stories with nuanced characters and antagonists, but it's nothing new. We had orcs from LOTR way back when), but if that's the only point then there's no meaning to it other than being contrarian. You can still have your evil characters and enemies, that's not my problem. But what's the point of making an entire species/race of conscious beings inherently evil?? I mean they can think like humans. Lügner literally assessed the situation, did some deduction from checking out the room and was actually able to empathise with his enemy. So they're clearly smarter than your regular animals or beasts. They're sentient but somehow wired to be evil? Why? What's the point? Does this contribute to the story in any meaningful way? Now, in the future if this concept is gonna lead to some very interesting storylines or ideas, then I will refrain my judgment until then. But if that's not the case, in terms of writing I see no point to this other than being reactionary, which is just hollow

2024-08-10 19:37:14 +0000 UTCI totally get where ntn is coming from though. There is a history of othering different ethnicities for being too different from us. Even in your example, it’s almost like saying, “well, dwarves and elves are close enough to acting like us and have similar customs, so they can be included” while thinking the demons are too barbaric to be considered “human-like”. Unfortunately this has occurred too many times in history with actual humans, where it’s easier to make a culture an enemy if we just make them seem like animals, for me to be 100% with this type of storytelling. Many writers have written monsters as stand-ins for their racist views, first one coming to mind being Lovecraft. I’m not saying it’s bad to have truly evil/amoral characters, that definitely makes for a interesting journey, and I don’t need antagonists to have a sob story, but to have a whole race of them be portrayed like that can feel a bit gross just by looking at our own history. Even if a leader of a people are being bigoted towards others, it doesn’t necessarily have to mean that the people as a whole are bigoted. I certainly don’t won’t to be viewed as sharing the views of some of my “leaders”.

2024-08-10 18:18:16 +0000 UTCoh how would I love for it to have a remake and properly adapt the manga; the whole work is very dear to me, since I was introduced to anime and manga through it 🥹 I still think tokyo ghoul anime is worth watching, but definitely falls off with the direction and execution by the staff and studio decisions.

2024-08-10 16:45:13 +0000 UTCThe real life equivalent of other races would be dwarves and elves who still share innate “humanity” despite being different from humans in appearance, culture and longevity. The demons here pray on the desire to project human emotions onto anything that resembles a human. So it would be like being bigoted to a non-mammal species of wild animal (one that doesn’t instinctually protect its own young) that is combined with an artificial intelligence. If there’s any connection being made to real people, the Frieren demons feel more like an exaggerated reflection of real life “demons” who commit mass murder and only act in self-interest. Through this lens, the *spoilers* are the victims of the demons’ bigotry and *spoiler* is a survivor of that.

2024-08-10 14:25:59 +0000 UTCI think it's a breath of fresh air in a way that there's lots of stories right now out there that make demons or other monsters misunderstood creatures that you can or are even supposed to sympathize with. Or just in general make the antagonist something very nuanced and gray. And there's nothing wrong with that when it is done well. Yet here they are just purely acting according to their nature of being predators to humans. Like you said it's not anything super innovative (and it doesn't have to be). I think the reason people like it (or at least why I do) is because it is just refreshing, nothing more. But each to their own of course.

Think of demons like cats - they meow at people for food because it gets them a reaction but they don't mean anything by it. We also don't call them evil just because they hunt, its just their nature and what they need to survive. If season 2 ever gets made, there's a really amazing arc it'll cover where the demon discussion takes center stage. It's absolutely my favorite arc of the series so lots to look forward to.

Like, as you said, they are survivalists, so I do think it would be interesting to meet demons who are living peacefully in one form or another because it helps with their own survival. But idk if that's something that is explored in the future or not!

It's still a shame that the manga has never been properly adapted. The manga is really good.

No sob backstory for actual demons, very anti-thesis for a lot of demon/creature revolved anime, but just predators who are doing their thing to survive. Love this in the post discussion 2) With the statement above, Frieren was tagged "racist" in social media because of her knowledge of demon from this episode. It was honestly just for fun, the usual memes, until some 4chan posts and some tweets took it seriously that garnered a bit of attention. But overall, if you're around Twitter let it be known that most of the time "autistic racist elf" is a banter for our beloved girlie right there 3) just like 5-6, I think it's also best that you guys watch episode 8-10 together😁 EDIT: I love the Ging line so much too ladies :D
