The characters aren’t good people but they love succession and think Walter white is one of the best characters they’ve seen so that won’t be an issue I don’t think, especially since the show is so well written you still like those characters and love some of them.

Watched a couple of episodes of Barry and it was pretty good, I plan to get back to it at some point.

2024-08-08 19:51:11 +0000 UTCNo shows are perfect. Breaking Bad is the closest in terms of consistency, but even it has some flaws (the marie subplots, the kids are pretty much plot devices). These shows are considered the best because of their peaks and baseline writing not because they’re perfect. And in terms of structure and pacing, sopranos is as modern as any non ultra serialized show. It’s just that most shows are super serialized and every plot generally leads somewhere and feels more integrated. But you can look at something like atlanta or the bear and see similarities and they are both modern shows. Also mad men had the same structure and pacing.

They are in fact very comparable considering the creator of mad men wrote on sopranos and he flatout said he learned how to structure his show based off it. Both are slice of life shows and focus more on in between moments than big drastic events (usually). Mad men may win the next poll if Sopranos voters vote for it next time since they are ultimately more similar to each other than Sopranos is to Barry. Not sure about Yellowstone.

Also the main character of sopranos is one of, if not, the single most fleshed out character on television and influenced characters like walter white and a lot of different anti-heroes including the main character from mad men. Also mad men’s creator wrote on the sopranos so there’s an overlap of the same type introspective character drama.

The difference between the two is kind of like the difference between Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Both exceptional, but one just tackles its topics with a much larger amount of depth. Less action, more time to let things breathe. Mad Men is famous for not really having much of a plot, it's just seven seasons of character development.
