so true. instead of a shonen esque battle the antagonist learns the meaning of life. from a conceptual standpoint this is like mount everest. to even go for this as a writer shows just how amazing togashi is.

shaiapouf is such a phenomenal villain, man.. no one built like him fr, but would you say he's the true villain? after all, he acts the way he's programmed to act, had he encountered life changing moments tailored to his personality, like pitou did when the king asked her to heal komugi, he might have evolved somewhat?

Not really just aimed at you, but most people who don't understand how these stories are written. Characters are representations of your human psyche, not just independent, whole individuals. The royal guards are Mereum's emotional (Pitou), intellectual (Pouf) and biological instincts (Youpi). How can anyone possibly like or dislike any of those characters? It makes no sense. They all serve a purpose within the story and within us. Not liking a character just shows how ignorant, not just you, but most people are when it comes to these sorts of things. Just wanted to point that out!

‘The Word X Is X You’ my easily favourite title of any episode. A poem in just four words. The way Welfin whispers Komugi followed by an explosion of beautiful imagery is easily one of the best moments in all of anime in my opinion. Pouf finally feeling how much Meruem cares for her, and immediately knowing he never really had a chance. Who would have thought in episode 91 that this Chimera ant would tell a fellow ant to try and live a human life? The payoff of this arc really makes it all worth it. I also appreciate Lola acknowledging how the beginning imagery brought her mind to Palestine. I thought the exact same. Children missing limbs, people starving in alleys, whilst the rich and powerful continue to wine and dine, toasting to the destruction of other people. Togashi wrote this arc over a decade ago, but feels just as relevant if not more in its themes and substance.

Pouf is the intellectual, logical side of you that helps you to achieve your goals in society and reality, while being a counter-balance to your emotional side which can become toxic and sometimes suicidal. In this instance, emotion won out in the end and the intellectual side has no choice but to follow and support those emotions. Let it be clear. Without Pouf (your intellectual side) you would be an emotional wreck, locked up in a psychiatric hospital, living a torturous life. Show some god damn respect!!!!

Well, his character on the surface level is supposed to be hated, his ending though is nothing but tragic. The only guard that died knowing he failed his duty and hurt his king.

Awesome discussion, feel like the Welfin/Meruem/Pouf encounter is a perfect thematic conclusion to the arc Meruem the baby God standing between two creatures with opposite intentions: One who sees Meruem as a king because of his biological nature while the other would only accept a close friend of his as a king (Pouf would DIE to shape Meruem into the King he wants him to be while Welfin will desperately fight to preserve his own life so he can find his friend) Love that throughout the story friendship has been the candle in the dark: If Gon hadn’t become friends with Killua then Killua wouldn’t have become friends with Ikalgo, Ikalgo wouldn’t have reconnected with Welfin as ants because of their previous friendship as humans and then Welfin wouldn’t have been able to reconnect Meruem to his friendship with Komugi (I also think it’s not a mistake that the arc is set in a fictionalized North Korea, a place known for dictators who force their populace to revere them like Gods. But Meruem is LITERALLY a God with followers who GENUINELY revere him and would give their lives for his sake)

Crazy how, after that intro, this whole episode is just the conversation and inner monologues of three chimera ants and it manages to capture the horror and beauty of humanity. One of those episodes of HxH that makes me think it might be the best piece of media ever lol. And one of my favorite discussions of yours too, found myself getting moved all over again.

IMO, Pouf would've been understood if the King would live all of his life playing with Komugi but it's gonna toil away at him slowly and yet cannot do anything about. Unlike if Pitou was in the same situation, she would've been happy as long as Meruem is happy. Since they already watched the next episode. I can say it. Next episode is peak.

Rewatching this and I kind of have the same opinion. Although Im more inclined to say that what the narrator meant was that Meruem was ''neither'' given the fact that in this arc one of the most prevalent themes in this arc is that both humans and ants are capable of the best and of the worst

maybe this is a reach but i interpreted the narrator’s last line as meruem transcending both humans and ants. that through remembering komugi and mastering pouf’s ability to read emotions, meruem has obtained an almost omnipotent capacity for empathy and understanding that no other creature has had. immediately he understands welfin, forgives pouf and asks for knuckle and meleoron to be released. but now just as he’s reached an almost godlike benevolence he succumbs to human made poison like some greek tragedy

Funnily enough, i believe it's implied that the snot dripping from Welfin's nose is what triggers his thought of Komugi, as the shot hyperfocuses on it. IMO that's kind of brilliant and funny too.

The difference in how pouf reacted to death before and after the "word" just shows how much it impacted his view, i believe that this is the moment he broke through his programming and finally accepted meruem as a person, as it was said in the episode, they share the same feelings, Pouf felt everything meruem did as if komugi was as close to him, previously he knew those emotions existed but he never knew how much they mean to meruem, he thought they were unnecessary but can you imagine sharing this beauitful feeling with the person you love most in the world and at the same time you know you were the one trying to take that away from him ? Pouf already knew he lost before the word was said, if meruem killed him before it he would still hear komugi after, then why was his reaction so different ? how does a person go from proudly dying to crying and asking for punishment?It took him to be literally spiritually bound to meruem to finally understand his true love for komugi and his true identity, in the end he was able to give in for what meruem truly is. There was something he said in the manga that was not here "there was not a reason for my wishes to become true" i think he sees how much his actions caused harm but it's far too late and that breaks him. "the only thing i could do is nod in assent" he was not even punished for what he did due to meruem's evolution and the only thing he can do is nod in assent to his king while crying, his entire life, his purpose, the only person he cares about, the person he was born to protect. He was the only thing keeping his king from this beautiful feeling, the feeling that he shares with him now and knows how much it means. "This, this is... This is how intensly he cares for her".

Ngl I was happy when Pouf died. He was super annoying and some people found his character endearing, which good for them but his character for me was the most annoying next to Cheetoh lol. Regarding what the king feels regarding Kogumi….I don’t know if I would called it love, I think it was more like admiration or respect for her. He deeply cares for her or maybe is another type of love since there are many different types of love. That’s something that I always debate with people sometimes but regardless.. I can’t wait for you girls to see the conclusion of this arc.
