The best way to get to me is to start off a storyline lighthearted and end it in devastating fashion, that's the pheasant story to me. You chuckle at it throughout and in the end it's like the show mocks you for thinking it would stay funny.

In Shintō, the traditional religion of Japan, significant emphasis is placed on purity and cleanliness. Impurity (Kegare) is considered spiritually polluting and can arise from various sources, including contact with blood, any form of death, and illness. These impurities are believed to affect not only the individual but also the community to which they belong. When a place or person is impure, it is believed to become susceptible to the influence of malevolent spirits called Tatarigami, as mentioned by Fuji-san in the episode. To address this, Shintō rituals often include purification to cleanse individuals and spaces of these impurities and restore spiritual harmony. Several movies by Studio Ghibli, such as Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, also explore these Shintō concepts

I think conniving is the word I'd use to describe Lady Ochiba in that last scene

Though not related to this series, I'm just curious: have you been recommended Blue Eye Samurai? It is a quite popular American anime from last year and the story is set in a similar historic period to that of Shogun (perhaps a few decades after the time of Shogun) and it is centered around a female protagonist so I presume that if you are enjoying Shogun so far, you will certainly enjoy Blue Eye Samurai. I would be so happy if you could add it to your reaction "waiting list" (unless you had already heard of it and are just waiting for S2).

I have the same concerns about future seasons, but I think they've earned the benefit of the doubt, I would like to think Hiroyuki Sanada wouldn't have been on board if they didn't have a plan. Fingers crossed!

Just watched this one myself yesterday! Would you say this dinner or the one in “Fishes” from The Bear was more tense?? 🤔
