Watching The boys season 4 without watching GEN Z seems like a mistake

2024-05-12 23:37:19 +0000 UTCToranaga is the heir's uncle through marriage. The heir's mother, Lady Ochiba, and Toranaga's daughter-in-law are sisters. Lady Ochiba has been taken prisoner by Toranaga on the pretext that she is visiting her sister, who is pregnant. We haven't seen either of these sisters on-screen (yet). The other regents are not directly related to Toranaga or to the heir.

Remember Martin Luther who caused Protestant reformation well that divided Europe for a really long time in which the two religious blocks were mortal rivals competing for power. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reformation The show is based on the Portuguese and later Dutch trading and missionary missions or the so called Nanban trade. This explains how Portugal and later replaced by the Dutch were the only European nations allowed to trade and stay on Japan (Japan wasn’t a country yet but many smaller kingdoms fighting which later will lead to the Sengoku Jidai a civil war era in Japan) but this led to technology exchanges with Japan. At the start of the show, the previous shogun was already dead, leaving an underage heir. That's the reason there is a council of regents. At the time in Japan, there was also an emperor, or tenno, but his power usually was more symbolic, his duties were mainly representative and ceremonial. The de facto rulers of the country, possessing the real political and military power above all the feudal lords, were the Shoguns during that historical period.

Almost all the characters are based on real historical figures from the Sengoku period in Japan, but with different names, allowing the author to take some liberties with the story: Toranaga -> Ieyasu Tokugawa Taiko (the previous Shogun) -> Hideyoshi Toyotomi (often referred to by the title Taiko in real life) John Blackthorne (Anjin) -> William Adams Lady Mariko/Maria -> Hosokawa Garasha/Gracia Akechi Jinsai (Mariko's Father) -> Akechi Mitsuhide Lady Ochiba (Mother of the heir) -> Yodo-no-kata

The first two episodes did air together and I think you'll see why when you get to the second one, a lot of things are cleared up and the show has more direction at that point.
