This entire palace invasion arc is a masterclass of storytelling

Mra Keung

At the end of the day, as much as I love Killua and Gon, we must admit that their relationship can sometimes come off as extremely toxic. There is a lot codependency involved, especially on Killua's part. In his mind Gon is his saviour, his light, the embodiment of everything good and kind there is, and he believes he owes him for it. He clings desperately to him also because he believes that his only purpose or place in this world is to stand beside him. If we rewind thing a little and go back to that one episode in Whale Island's Arc, when they're stargazing and questioning each other's resolutions, Killua says "I don't know, I guess I'll just follow you around for a while". He didn't take it lightly in the slightest, that was a clear and strong promise. He never had the intention of separating from Gon and going his own way, he knew he was gonna stick by his side, and do anything to keep him safe, even if it meant putting his life in danger.

It's really not for me, and this is coming from someone who ADORES the show (I even have two hxh tattoos!). I think the writing is phenomenal in this arc, and I've grown to love it even more than I thought I could. Adore the characters, the mini arcs, developments and writing of the show. This arc is the best of everything hxh has to offer, but the pacing and the narrator turns it into something I genuinely struggle to watch without being infuriated. I could rant for hours about my love and upset at this show/this arc, but I'd love to hear some takes on what the narrator could offer for someone like myself, as I would love to love this arc!

Personally, the pacing, and in tandem the narrator, makes this arc unbearable for me. I enjoy the principle of 'show, don't tell' in a series or movies, and this arc is the antithesis of that. Having her reintroduction, transformation, failure and then redemption in the space of 20 minutes, with all the emotional subtext told to us by the narrator in real time is deeply aggravating. The narrator leaves no room for interpretation, as everything is just told to us as it's happening, sometimes even BEFORE a development happens.

You two have been switching between saying ‘Puff’ and ‘Poof’ the whole arc, even between different sentences lol. But the correct pronunciation is actually ‘Poof’.

Funnily enough, I do think this whole transformation for Palm reversed some of her mental instability. Along with a whole slew of problems, I think one of Palms main issues is that she couldnt regulate her emotions so they came out in big explosions (including love with gon/knov or rage towards killua). Separating her from her emotions and then getting them back in my opinion fixed that. You could also see with her nen power. While knov was not teaching her anything out of her harmful power that was unaligned with her nen class, now she has a better, more stable power, which is I think is the authors way of showing that shes now more stable

Rahaf

what are you talking about? This arc is a masterpiece for a reason, what could be a better direction than that?

Wallas

Don't worry about it if you want to get better you will the more you do it.

The manga's pacing is much better. The 2011 has plenty of things weighing it down. Like time constraint (it came out weekly for years). So they had to pace it accordingly and stretch out the story. The 2011 staff did a good job. But that's all it is. A good job. A more talented staff with a good budget and the proper timeframe would take this story to a whole new plateau. HxH, well paced, better animated, better direction, visual storytelling, artstyle, no censorship. Just imagine.

125-126 together pls, great fight

I completely understand why some people dislike the pacing for certain things in Chimera Ant, but the palace invasion imo is a masterclass in pacing. In a single episode we reintroduce Palm, get her backstory on what happened to her, have her transformation and powers explained all while giving both her and Killua a character rich emotional mini arc. All in a bit over 20 minutes. It's truly incredible, especially considering we got the same for Welfin in the previous episode. As excited as I am for the rest of the arc, very sad you're not far off the end of this amazing journey.

Kya Colosseum

Talk about how you two said everything i wanted to say in less than half the words i used ? that's kinda sad lmao.

Salvatore

ok so now you can ignore the Pal from before and just consider this new Palm, which is an excellent character. That's how I see it at least

Wallas

I totally agree, the fact that you get to understand more of each character everytime you rewatch is the joy of hxh for me. I could probably understand those experiences since i know two people of that exact description, though dealing with them is a topic i can't really add on lol.

Salvatore

I think I get what you're saying. Palm has never had control of her emotions but the complete loss of control gave her perspective. And also, holy mother of run on sentence batman!

Shivering King Banana

I love the scene of Killua crying, it's one of the few times throughout the show you really remember that beyond the crazy assassin backstory and everything, he's literally just a 12 year old kid.

Flubbedsquid

I don't really know how to explain what's going on with Palm but I've seen it a few times before and I think it's always been a woman behaving like this. That's just my experience though. People who frequently lose control suddenly becoming the calm and reliable one when the person who is usually calm gets upset. These people may seem crazy and completely out of control of their emotions but they're not, they have empathy. I think they just lose perspective when they feel overwhelmed. It's exhausting to be around. At first it made me feel special because I thought it meant they really do care about me, and they do. But only being able to show it when someones at the edge isn't healthy. I really love this show for taking emotions I don't understand and can't put to words and showing them.

Shivering King Banana

Nah, you're right. It's difficult to explain, but the fact that they separated her emotions from her memories did seem to make her more "stable" and, ironically, more human. I also think her Nen helped in filling the void that disconnection made, as we know Nen can carry the emotions of the user.

Gaboxxy

how did yall learn to be so locked in when watching shows

Killua made me bawl this episode lol he’s my little baby so it broke my heart

Salvatore

I still don’t like Palm but the fact that Pitou experiment sort of backfired was a bit surprising the first time I saw this episode. I was expecting Killua and Palm to go at each others throats but Togashi is definitely not a conventional writer and the way he handled this interaction was definitely something that I always appreciated about his writing even from characters I don’t care about much like Palm. Sad that HunterxHunter is coming to an end in a few weeks… but if you guys decide to read the manga, I hope we get a least a mini review or something from you girls :”)

Jack SV

Also it's Pouf (Puuf) like the word poof. It is not (Puhf) like the word puff, I thought you two were saying it wrong on purpose this whole time.

Timothy Smith

did she day drop a nuclear bomb to kill the king?? it sounds a joke to me

Adrian Fernández Castells

Togashi the GOAT strikes again. I’ve been waiting for you girls to watch the episode since the arc started and especially since you both didn’t like Palm as a character. Even though she’s bat shit crazy, she’s not stupid and she knows Killua needed to hear those words. She acted like an adult when she needed to. Togashi knows how to write relatable human characters even with all the crazy nen powers at play. Can’t wait for you girls to react to these upcoming episodes!

melo

yes!

Ay-can

in case you do some binge-watching sessions, after episode 135's outro there is a post-credit scene that you need to watch. Just to be sure that you won't miss it
