A few more minor thoughts: "All life begins with violence and wailing" is a great line.
Lmao I love that Max is literally worth 20 men, that's amazing.
I think I've said this before, but one of the things I love about this show is the different perspectives. Not just with various characters on different sides, but none of those "sides" are treated as if everyone on them feels the exact same way. Like you guys talked about in the discussion, Julius and the others that revolted with him have every right to view the pirates as no different than the English. There are multiple characters in the show who have either experienced slavery directly or live with its aftermath, and none of them react to it in the same way, but it is still a foundational experience for all of them.
Flint not answering when Silver asks him about Thomas, if he would give up this war to be with him...it's so great. Because there is a lot you can infer from him deliberately not answering, though of course you still can't actually know what he would say.
Both Eleanor and Silver talk about being in "some kind of hell". Its in different contexts, but the exact same phrasing, and that's interesting.

Sorry for the third post, but i was kinda writing the above comments as i was watching your review. How do you figure that Flint would chose love when presented with those options? He didn't answer John's question and the answer he gave, i would suggest points to him more than likely choosing to fight on...

Oh and another thing.... I have mentioned that Flint is in my top 5 favorite characters of all time, and i realized that in Andor there is a character there that has many similarities to Flint (not as photogenic for you perhaps :-) ) and his worldview.

Although i would probably agree with you about putting my priority in my loved ones when placed in such a situation, i realize that the moral choice would be to sacrifice it all for a cause that you deem worthy, especially if it meant that countless other people would benefit from your sacrifice. Thankfully there were a lot of driven people throughout history who have made that sacrifice so that we currently can enjoy the things we do.

I think he’s based on several different real people, and you’re right that that’s likely one of them!

Interestingly I always thought "Julius" was based on Cudjoe, the leader of the Leeward Maroons in Jamaica. Queen Nanny (who I think Madi's mother is clearly loosely based on) being the leader of the Windward Maroons.

Funny, in S1 and 2 I didn't cared for Eleanor's character. At the end of S3 I really disliked her, and now in S4, ironically, is when I like her character the best.

It continues to baffle me that he didn't win every acting award in existence for his performance in this show. It's on another level.

It's a fairly small thing, but I quite like the relationship that has developed between Eleanor and Mrs. Hudson. When they first interacted in s3 Hudson was completely dismissive toward Eleanor. Now, she's become so fond of her she's urging her to flee for London with her. It's honestly very sweet.

What a tremendous hour this episode is, I wish season 4 was 12-13 episodes just to maintain the pacing, but wow I forgot how great this episode is. I can’t even begin with how good all those conversations were. The only thing I didn’t like about this episode is that, to me, it made no sense for Eleanor to have Flint as collateral to ensure the deal would be honored. The pirates take almost all the risk with her deal, if anything they should have had her as collateral to ensure that the Governor honors the deal on her behalf, especially as she holds their end accountable for partners who wouldn’t want the cache given up

In my last comment I talked about the Max and Eleanor scene but I also have to mention: rewatching their breakup in s1 makes me incredibly emotional now. Because it makes me think of this moment here. Where Eleanor looks back and regrets she wasn’t someone who was able to say yes back then, but has become that person now.

That Max and Eleanor conversation makes me just as emotional as it did you guys. It’s so good. On Max’s side, it clearly means a lot for her to hear this. Especially after pointing out that she has been warning Eleanor that all of this would happen. Their relationship post breakup has been very interesting- for all that there was still hurt there, there was also a lot of respect. But still, you can see for Max it’s almost like a muscle unclenching. Especially since this feels like a more genuine apology than the one Eleanor tried to give at the end of s1.
It’s so fascinating for Eleanor to come around and basically say that she wishes she had been able to say yes when Max wanted to run away with her. And I don’t think her relationship with Rogers has as much to do with it as her pregnancy does. Not in some “now that I’m having a baby all I care about is being a mother” kind of way, but…for Eleanor it represents a fresh start. A way for her to not do what her parents did to her. To show her child all the love and care she was denied.
And of course it ties in thematically with a lot of other aspects of this episode and this season in general. “Some kind of hell to choose between two irreplaceable things” as Silver said.

That conversation with Max and Silver is great. And what she says I think really outlines her character. Killing Silver would have “solved some problems”, but was not something she was able to live with. Really interesting stuff.

Oooof that scene with Anne this episode. There’s a lot of hard to watch stuff in this one. The show has never been one to hold back on violence, but it definitely feels like they have intentionally upped it this season, and that makes sense on a narrative level.
Anyway, as hard as it is watching Anne get beaten, I love what this demonstrates to us about the true partnership that Jack and Anne have. Especially when compared to Eleanor and Woodes Rogers. Even though Anne could very very easily die here, Jack trusts her enough to go with her plan. Meanwhile Rogers has been not fully trusting Eleanor for the past few episodes.
