With the expanse to tide them over before better call saul came back. Unbelievable.

TeaDrinker3000

Didn’t they do breaking bad and better call Saul right before as well?

Cole

Now you got me confused too ahhaahha. Wasn't he in chains along with the other slaves being taken to God knows where?!

Gustavo

I’m a little confused by your statement here. Why wouldn’t he be in Nassau anymore in that scenario?

cosmotron

Yeah, I don't know, still doesn't make sense to me, I mean, him not being in Nassau is not an option because the camp depends on it, doesn't it? So, if the pirates don't get guns, but Mr. Scott is not in Nassau anymore to provide for the camp, how would that be better? At least in Nassau he could try to do something.

Gustavo

Not quite, I said that as far as I knew they didn’t start planning this storyline for him until s2. However I also said that I think his behavior on the ship with the slaves actually could still fit in quite well with this reveal. Basically in that episode he says that he wants to keep the pirates from having the guns because they would “be a danger to someone I love” and it’s certainly meant to refer to Eleanor. But I argued that you could apply it to actually be referring to Madi/this place. Because the pirates having those guns would absolutely pose a danger to the Maroon community. England having them is also dangerous of course, but the pirates live much closer to the Maroon camp and would therefore potentially be more dangerous on that end. There’s also the idea that he has a cover to maintain, which I imagine has had him have to make some pretty serious moral compromises over the years. So his reluctance to help at first I think can fit in with what we know now quite well.

cosmotron

A couple of episodes ago, I think it was you that was wondering if the writers planned this Maroon camp story for Mr. Scott from the start, and now remembering his behavior in S1E6 when he was on the boat with the other slaves, I think they didn't. It wouldn't make sense, I mean, he having Madi, his wife and all the others from the camp depending on him, it wouldn't make sene for him to be so dismissive of his fate, he would've join the plan to be rescued from the start. He loves Eleanor, but his love for her wouldn't trump his love for his daughter and wife.

Quick answers: - masts are the wooden poles (can't come with a better English word) that holds the sails in a ship - Jack is often used as diminutive for John, which was the actual Rackham first name. He was knowned as "Calico Jack" because of the clothes he was used to wear. Starting with Jack, I really disagree with his decision here, he basically said "I will set things in motion so that Spain will destroy everything and kill everybody just because I want to be famous". Kinda childish in my opinion. And selfish too, let's be objective here: they have a good thing going on in Nassau now, people seems happy, to be treated well and they are not outlaws anymore, that's exactly what Flint and Thomas wanted. I think Silver scene while being treated is a very strong sign of his change: back in the very beginning of S1 he said "Torture won't work. I have an extremely low tolerance for pain. I'll say anything to make it stop" while now he is refusing to take anything against the pain, even a simple stick to bite. It's an odd thing to say considering the character and what he is famous for, but damn I feel so sorry for Blackbeard, it hurts me to see him with a broken heart :'(

Sweet Owl

Something cool that distinguishes the two John's - Rackham and Silver, is that the name John was one of the most popular names in colonial times. Silver, before joining Flint's crew, clearly is some kind of opportunist and liar. His motivation back then was just make a lot of money, so having a very common name stands for his benefit as one who would prefer to not be seen. But Rackham? His whole thing is about legacy. He puts more effort into things that other pirates don't care about. Back in Season 2, when he met that other pirate captain, he was low-key judging him for the name of his ship, "Your ship is named after the greatest disappointment in the history of warfare?". So it fits him very well being the person that he is, that he'd go by "Jack", which pairs very nicely with Rackham when said together, rather than boring old "John".

*review spirals into a vaguely philosophical discussion about the permanence/impermanence of digital media* “maybe our channel just gets deleted at some point” 😭

Sebastian

Also, the girls potentially doing Mr. Robot, The Wire, Black Sails and then The Sopranos consecutively is an insane run

TeaDrinker3000

I think Black Sails has a strong argument for being the most emotionally-engaging TV drama ever (at least with live-action) LM joked in one of their reviews that they might need to take a break from shows after finishing Black Sails, but that's literally what I did after I finished it for the first time lol I went like an entire month without watching any TV shows because doing so would have felt like going out on a date immediately after ending a long-term relationship.

Scott

Jack is the diminutive/nickname for John. Why? I don't know. I love that they shoot Woodes Rogers with half his face in shadow. When he is being reasonable, they show his good side, when he goes darker (as you noticed here), they show the side with the scar.

Gillian

WHO EDITED THIS EPISODE I MUST KNOW. End discussion had me dying hahaha

I cracked up quite a few times in this one just from their exchanges lol

Jack, Jack, Jack!!!!!! This is one of my FAVORITE episodes for his character. He single handedly set the flame for the war that's on Nassau, a war that BOTH parties have now acknowledged as a war. In one single stroke he declared himself a forever enemy of Woodes Rogers and pushed Rogers into becoming more volatile in his determination to achieve his goals. I love it and I love him. It pains me that he is only my 4th favorite character because he is genuinely amazing!!! My heart broke for Blackbeard, he was so sad to see that Vane once again chose to betray him when all he ever wanted was for Vane to be his partner/son, but I can't help but notice how Vane has done to Blackbeard what was done to him by Eleanor. It's funny because Vane ALWAYS said him and Eleanor were just alike, lol. But I don't think even HE notices this similarity. I completely understand Max standing on the opposite side of Jack and Anne, they all could have reached a seemingly peaceful negotiation in which no one could be hurt and all their dreams could potentially still be reached (with the exception of Flint and crew, lol) if Jack had just given up the gold. She was right at the finish line of achieving what she always wanted, and then Jack ripped it away from her, with Anne's help, without a second thought of what that means for her. This was as much a betrayal to her as it was a slap in the face to Woodes, so I don't blame her for standing against them, even though it hurts to see them being on opposite sides now. Love how you ladies noticed the vibes between Madi/Silver last episode. For me when I first watched, I didn't catch the vibes until this episode but upon re-watch countless times I see the vibes were there from the first meeting, but I loved how Madi was able to get through to Silver and he FINALLY got his leg looked after. Plus her line about the crown is one of my favorites of the series.

Nyeisha Melvina Clark

I didn't remember that Jack's name was John, so rewatching this episode I was as "WHAT?" as the girls.

Flint: Oaths were taken, and I have come to see them honored. Also Flint: I don't care that you shook my hand. ... Forget me, forget Teach, forget loyalty, compacts, honor, debts, all of it. The way Flint bends the speeches to better suit him. Really a master at work. Vane saving Flint for the second time.

During my degree i wrote a compilation of short stories for one of my modules, i can DM it to you on Discord if you want 😊

Anyway, with that we go to a great conversation between Madi and Scott. She talks about how the volatile relationship between Silver and Flint could just as easily lead to their undoing. And Scott makes an excellent point: “The most compelling story requires a villain at its center. And if either Captain Flint or Mr. Silver sees the other as the villain - or worse, us as that - then all is lost. They are of great value to us, but they must be managed by us to avoid that outcome.” Scott talks about wishing he could have been around her, been a better father, and that’s as good a time as any to talk about the contrast between him and Richard Guthrie. When Scott discovered that staying in Nassau would be dangerous for his wife and daughter, he did whatever he could to get them sent away somewhere safe. Richard Guthrie…did not. And while both Scott and Guthrie “left” their daughters and were largely away from them…Guthrie left Eleanor to fend for herself because he saw no value in her. Scott left Madi in the Maroon camp because it is where she would be safe, and because he loved her so much and wanted her to have a future. “The villain makes the story. So to manage our current partners, we must ensure that we all agree at all times who our common villain is.” Aaaand cut to not only Roger’s book, but Roger’s face. Excellent editing choices, communicates it all perfectly. “I have sacrificed too much to build something here, I will not let them take it away.” Makes perfect sense for where Max is at. Not only that, but I cannot emphasize enough how much Jack’s choice is something that actively puts her in danger, and for someone who was once a partner that’s very much like a betrayal. We end on an excellent scene between Vane and Flint. Poor Vane really feels bad for what he did to Teach, and has to believe he didn’t do it for nothing. “It would have helped having the fleet.” hahaha Flint is rarely funny on his own, so moments like that are ones to treasure. And we properly end with Vane’s narration wondering if they will be able to find the cache before Rogers can, as Anne hides from the men out looking for her and the money. Quite a cliffhanger, especially since it was a shorter episode, but it was no less excellent. Can’t wait for the next one!

cosmotron

The scene with Max and Jack. There’s a lot to talk about with that one, though I did a lot of that in another comment. First off, gotta comment how how great Max’s dress and necklace are. Just have to say it. The costumes on this show always look excellent. Secondly, I like that she knows him enough to try and frame this through the idea of his legacy. That she will even gladly help spread that legacy, to let everyone know what he has done to secure a future for Nassau. Except, of course, that’s not what he did at all. He’s determined to tell “rather different story”. And I love how scared Max looks when she realizes what he’s done. She even pleads with him, “Do not do this.” But it’s already done. And that fear Max feels clearly starts to turn to anger. She can’t believe Jack has done this, and what means.

cosmotron

well, that's actually a complicated question tbh. it's always been alice in wonderland (have a couple of tattoos to prove it 😂) but that's maybe the nostalgia talking. i also adored nada bu carmen laforet and los renglones torcidos de dios by torcuato luna de tena but it's been like 10 years since i read those so i cannot say for sure if they're still amongst my favourites. bodas de sangre by federico garcía lorca is also spectacular. i'm aware that i'm mostly saying spanish authors but i'm sure there's translated versions if someone is interested. i'm also really into short stories actually. i love books that consist of a bunch of short stories. i'm also open to suggestions if someone wants to recommend something. i'm working less hours for a few months and i have more free time.

“They took my home. I can’t walk away from that. Can you? Forget me, forget Teach, forget loyalty, compacts, honor, debts, all of it. The only question that matters is this: who are you?” And once more Flint strikes to the heart of the matter through the power of his words. It’s always amazing to watch. The duel between Flint and Teach. Man, it’s incredibly exciting. You really think for a second he managed to kill Teach, but then it’s revealed he was only grazed. I appreciate Flint waiting for Teach to get up again, clearly a more honorable move despite that they are fighting to the death. At the same time, he still hasn’t recovered from literally almost starving to death at sea, so he’s not at his best and things start to go south pretty quick. And even though you can probably predict that Vane is going to step in, it’s still very exciting when he does, really makes you want to cheer while also making you feel so bad for Teach. You can see on his face how much his hurts him: he’s heartbroken by this. But he still can’t bear to kill Vane either, and simply walks past him. “Take him. And get the fuck off my beach.” Madi and Silver again. Silver continues to be a bit ridiculous. I understand not wanting to be on opium, but not even taking the stick to bite down on? C’mon my guy. I do love how Madi reaches forward to wrap her hand around his, and offer him some comfort since he’s refusing so much of it. And of course that leads nicely into his confession to her afterward. About descending into the depths of Flint’s darkness and despair, connecting with him but being afraid it may lead to his own end. And Madi again comes in with reasonable solutions. That Silver, no matter what he thinks, does not actually need to do this alone. For someone like Silver, who has been alone all his life from what we understand, it’s a revelation that’s not easy to wrap his head around, even after all the ways he’s changed. “Maybe to go to such a place, one needs another. To hold the tether, and to find the way out.” Madi just continuing to have great line after great line in this episode.

cosmotron

Hahaha I love Featherstone and Idelle. “Aside from the tit curtains?” “It’s called a cravat.” And the little bit of fussing between them afterward, so endearing. Another great Madi and Silver scene. “For some time now I have been holding my entire life together with both hands.” Some of what Silver says is true, but I think it’s definitely tied up in his own fears of being perceived as weak rather than it being a reality. “To know, from that moment forth, I would forever be the one who tends, as opposed to the one who is tended to. You’re frustrated, you’re angry, you’re tired. Perhaps no one else knows why. I believe that not even you know why. But I know why. The crown is always a burden…but it cannot be borne if you cannot stand.” What a great speech from Madi, laying out how much she understands about leadership while also pointing out the inevitable fact that Silver cannot do any of this if he is literally too sick from his wound to be able to get up. It’s the exact kind of thing Silver needs to hear. Rogers really comes in all welcoming, giving Jack wine and etc. I mean it’s not a bad tactic, it just feels…strange? Like a performance, perhaps. Which it ultimately is of course, not that that’s unexpected. How else is he supposed to try and convince Jack? “I confess I may not have soldiered through to the end, but y’know…I got the gist of it.” Jack’s hilarious as always. And I love the little pause as Rogers takes that in haha. And the way he follows it up with “I’m very particular about my library but people seem to have liked it fine! Congratulations on all of that.” Just…perfection. “I need you to give it up…or we’re all dead.” I mean…that does lay it all out there, doesn’t it? Considering what Jack chooses to do…I think it’s important to remember. I don’t want him to side with Rogers, but that doesn’t make this statement any less true.

cosmotron

Blackbeard and Netta, the prostitute he has regularly visited over the years. Great conversation. Even though she’s not an important character, I like what she says about “the little people” always being the ones that hurt the worst. And of course there’s the reveal from Blackbeard: why things are different, why he has decided now he has to try and take Vane in as his son/successor. He is dying. “Once in a while it ticks closer to reaching its terminus and ticking its chime. A grim little timepiece whose ticking has grown louder to my ears of late.” In the first scene of this season, Blackbeard talking about “everything moving toward its end” in a “clock that never stops ticking”. I love the way this show connects/repeats dialogue or phrases in this show, it makes it all feel more meaningful. The language used here is very deliberate after all the clock imagery in the previous season. Great stuff, and of course it’s very illuminating as to why Teach has done everything he has lately for Vane. He always cared about him, but with his own end so clearly approaching, he knows this is his last chance. Back at Nassau, we get another compelling scene with Eleanor and Mrs. Hudson, the chambermaid. I mentioned it before, but for those that missed it she’s married to our very own Toby Stephens! And even in a much smaller role she’s excellent. It also feels like a good continuation of what Nettie the prostitute said to Teach about “little people” being the ones hurt. Mrs. Hudson and her children don’t really have anything to do with what’s happening, aside from her being employed by Rogers. And yet there is a very tangible threat hanging over her head if the Spanish don’t get the gold back. It’s a microcosm of the threat that awaits Nassau too. “Insults to Empires require answers.” Great line from Eleanor. There’s the more tangible threat that exists toward Eleanor and Rogers too: if they don’t succeed, Rogers faces debtor’s prison and Eleanor will likely get the noose. Their lives and futures quite literally hinge on this succeeding.

cosmotron

Man, this season is flying by. I’m sad that we are getting closer and closer to finishing, but there’s still so much greatness ahead. I like the tone set by the opening drums, how she see everyone there watching. Well, except for Silver of course. I also like the detail that The Maroon Queen is far too focused on her husband to even seem to notice when Madi leaves. And in turn I like what she was saying to him before she realized that his leg had kept him from attending, because she makes very good points. Especially since there have been vibes between them, I like that she isn’t coming here because she’s concerned about him (like, she was already worried about his leg or something). Instead she’s concerned about their alliance, and it’s good characterization for her. On the Walrus, I love the moment where Flint tells the crewmember “If he did it wrong you showed it to him wrong”. For one thing, it’s true. If he was being taught to do something it is on whoever was teaching to make sure he learned it right. But it also demonstrates how this isn’t going to be a peace easily maintained. They all need to learn to trust each other. It’s also important to establish that Billy is very unhappy with this turn of events. He “wasn’t convinced” the way everyone else was, and doesn’t think it’s a good idea. Ernyyl frrqf gur qvivqr gung pbzrf yngre. Ovyyl jnfa'g vairfgrq va guvf nyyvnapr sebz gur fgneg.

cosmotron

I'll be going through the whole episode like usual, but I wanted to start with a comment talking about Jack's big choice in this episode. Whoo boy. It’s great writing and perfectly in character. And one of the worst things he, or anyone on this show, has ever done (this and using slaves on the fort). He has willingly resigned Nassau and all those living in it - not just its general people that we don’t know but Max, Featherstone, Idelle - to be subject to something like the Rosario Raids all over again. An event which burned Nassau to the ground and resulted in hundreds of deaths. Jack willingly makes a choice to try and assure that will happen (in a way that would also result in his own death)...all for the sake of his legacy. For people knowing he was responsible. That’s pretty awful on it’s own, but there’s another level too that he doesn’t seem to be thinking of at all. What about Anne? What does he think this choice will do to her? Will make her do? It could easily get her killed as well, but he doesn’t seem to be thinking about that at all. Again, that’s not a criticism. This is Jack’s biggest flaw, and what he is most fixated on. And I definitely get satisfaction from seeing him defy Rogers. But we can’t understate the magnitude of what he is choosing to do here, even if we love his character. In fact, these kind of deep flaws are part of what make him a great character.

Hey guys, this is my reaction to 3x06 😀 https://youtu.be/HXxWOi-6HDY?si=tG5tpNBbfyVU0Zz5 So on Sunday i shot my reactions to the last 7 episodes of Black Sails (not the reviews as well, that would be impossible 😂 I'll shoot those later), so I am officially spoiler-immune for the series now and am DYING to be able to read ALL of the comments now without fear 😍 To the girls and anyone else who has yet to finish the series, I can assure you that you will *not* be disappointed by the remainder of the show. I was so apprehensive to let myself fall in love with the show lest it decline in quality in the later episodes, but now I can officially say that Black Sails has completely healed the part of my heart that was wounded by Game Of Thrones. And once I've gotten through shooting my reviews for the last 5 episodes, I think that this might actually become a top 5 show!?! 😱 It's neck and neck with Attack On Titan which is an insane compliment, so once again, thank you so much to everyone who's been pushing the girls to watch Black Sails all these years as otherwise I never would have been aware of its existence, let alone its quality. And finally, for those of you who have seen the series entirely and have no qualms with spoilers, I'll leave you with my thoughts on Black Sails surmised in one image (I'm very proud of making this meme myself 😊) SERIES SPOILERS: https://imgur.com/C1ePmeF
