I watched the anime after watching the live action. Some of the best story telling and world building ever. Don't let the number of episodes scare you as each episode is only about 15 minutes each, if you skip the intro, recap, and previews. Plus, since this was designed as a TV show, there are a lot of scenes repeated that you can fast forward through.
