Black Sails 3x03 Reaction

Black Sails 3x03 Reaction

Max doesn’t fit that trope at all, and I definitely don’t think she only cares about herself. Mr. Scott was lucky enough to be able to find a community that allowed him to save his family, and in turn utilized his position at Nassau to be able to help keep that community safe. Max did not have that experience, and has had to learn to do whatever she can to survive. I don’t think I’ve ever argued that she’s a paragon of virtue, but I also don’t think it really makes sense to compare her to Mr. Scott.

cosmotron

What about the others in the slave quarters. Max only cares about herself. The difference between her and Mr. Scott is profound. Not to be too harsh but Max is the tragic mulatto and if she could get rid of her brown skin for the "most beautiful skin" she would.

What an incredibly lovely thing to say. You girls have shown me so much kindness from the beginning, I don't take it for granted at all. I'm very lucky to know you two. I didn't think when I first subscribed almost 3 years we'd end up having this much back and forth. Insofar as parasocial friendships go, this is a good one 😅😁 Love you girls, thanks again 😊❤️

That's what I thought too about a larger share given to him by Max and Jack. I think that's the one he is talking about, that's what makes more sense to me anyway. Now about his share as a Walrus crew, I don't think he would give that up. It wouldn't make much sense, because if he's getting the same as everyone else, it wouldn't be a betrayal or anything like that.

Gustavo

I imagine that Silver would have gotten a far larger share originally, as he would have been included among the "crew" of Jack, Anne, and Max (which had far less crew members). Even if him being included with them wasn't known to others, he would have originally been getting a larger share because of that, rather than the smaller shares gotten once the gold was dispensed more evenly among the three crews. BUT, I think Silver was also talking about his "share" that he would have gotten as part of the Walrus crew. Meaning he gave up two shares. That's how I always took it anyway, someone else can correct me if they know more.

cosmotron

I didn't remember this scene of John saying that he gave up the claim to his share. I always thought that Max and the 3 crews (Flint's, Jack's and Vane's, or at least just Jack's and Flint's) split the gold equally. So if they did split it, what share is John talking about? An extra? And if the split didn't happen, why was Jack concerned about Flint and Vane finding out about the exchange of some of the gold? And did the Walrus crew really accept not getting their share, after everything they've been through? I feel I'm missing something here, but right now I can't remember.

I know I already talked about the Max monologue in the cave, but I just wanted to add this. It is so fundamental to her character that she grew up looking in from the outside. That she stood "among the bugs and the filth" staring in on what should have by all rights been hers. That little girl was her age. The man inside was *her* father. But only one of them was kept warm and loved and safe inside that room. It's really heartbreaking.

I saw a very good commentary on Woodes Rogers a few months ago elsewhere on the internet: He's what James McGraw would have been if he'd been born rich (And presumably straight). Consider, his proposal is almost exactly what Thomas and James proposed: Pardons for all of the pirates, transporting new citizens to Nassau to form a self-sufficient city, and peaceful reincorporation into the British realm. Flint was willing to DEBASE himself before Peter Ashe in season two for this outcome. And Rogers seems to mean it. He really does want to avoid violence. But unlike Thomas or James, who were moved by idealism, he's motivated by expediency. It will be EASIER if the pirates all cooperate. That's why he's pushing for this angle. Not because he cares about redeeming their souls, but because he wants them to get out of his way. To the people benefiting from his leniency, I suppose it might not matter why he's doing it. If you're getting a full pardon and you get to walk away from a life of violence and fear without future pursuit looming over your head, you'd grab that offer no matter why they dangled it in front of you. But to us, who can see WHY, we can see that his motivations stem from money and power.

Looking forward to watching your reaction!

Eleanor was always fine with Nassau being under British rule and being legitimate as long as SHE was at the head of the table or that she was accounted for as being the one that made it happen. She has always wanted acknowledgement, plain and simple, so siding with Woods Rogers is not hard for her, where she is wrong though is that she believes Flint and most of the others would also side with her, that being because last she saw Flint, he was on his way to make a deal with Peter. She has yet to realize that it is not just Vane that will put up a fight. Also Flint never suspected Silver in stealing the gold because like Billy said, Flint never saw Silver as equal enough to himself that he could pull off deceiving him. He knew Silver was clever, but he never thought for a second Silver could be more clever than him and when Silver finally told him the truth, he realized the error in his judgement, and it not only allowed him to gain respect for Silver, he finally saw him as someone that could match him.

In a weird way, I've always viewed Flint & Silver hunting that shark together as their version of having sex for the first time. Before that moment, Flint & Silver had only ever talked with each other. They'd strategize, they'd pontificate, and they'd bicker. But now, for the very first time, and just a couple of minutes after Silver proposed that they become "partners", they suddenly find themselves physically working together to capture a shark. I see the symbolism!

I love how much you both love the Flint and Miranda relationship. I love it too, and I feel like some people kind of sleep on it. When the Thomas reveal happens I’ve seen some think that this means Flint loved Miranda less, or that he was never in love with her in the same way. But that isn’t true. Flint loved - loves - both of them deeply and truly. If anything, Thomas’s death caused the bond between Miranda and Flint to become even more unbreakable. Twisted and tangled, but unbreakable. Dream Miranda puts it best when she says she had “loved him like no other” and so that means she also “knows him like no other”. And Flint in turn is “ruined” in the wake of her death, left without anyone that truly knows him anymore. The idea that Miranda “birthed” Flint also applies in numerous ways. For one thing, she was the one who first started to bring him closer to herself and Thomas. She invited Flint in with the invitation of a book she and Thomas both read and loved (Don Quixote), and further encouraged him to become closer despite what civilization told them was appropriate or not.

I’ve enjoyed hearing your thoughts and seeing your reactions to this show so much! I’m really happy I was able to help you feel inspired with it all.

This, of course, leads to the scene on the upper deck. Two men accused of stealing food, both swearing their innocence. You can see that Silver doesn’t know what to do, who to believe. Then we see Flint’s footsteps, and immediately everything feels tense. He doesn’t even hesitate, just walks up and shoots the first man. Then, as the other is relieved and thinking he is spared, Flint loads his pistol again. He aims it at the second man…and he sees Miranda. Because of course he does. And I think the man is saying “forgive me”, but Flint hears it in her voice. God, the expressions on Toby Stephens’s face communicates so much. And, from the perspective of the other men, Flint does this so easily and without feeling. But the truth is quite the opposite. Flint feels all of this. So heavily that he has to lock himself in his cabin to sob. I love that the camera stays with him and we just see him completely break down. Ugh, it hurts my heart, but again I can’t compliment the actor enough. I feel like a lot of other shows would maybe have him show less emotion, or just a single tear, but Black Sails is never afraid to show Flint being emotional, and it’s a big part of what makes him such a rich character. I know Lola and Milena are going to be crushed seeing him cry as well.

cosmotron

“If you insist on behaving like children then I will be your daddy.” One of the best Jack lines in the whole show, that always cracks me up. Perfection, no notes. Teach and Vane’s conversation is really interesting. I love how Teach knows that Vane can’t walk away and tries to offer an alternative, even though he doesn’t like what Vane is doing here. And he makes it clear why: to him, Vane is like a son, especially since he had none of his own. And you can tell that Vane doesn’t really know what to do with that information, but that Teach’s words do have a ring of truth in them: for all that Vane does support Nassau, doing this has led him to a place he doesn’t like. One that makes him do things like own slaves. And I like the conversation with Anne and Jack afterward too. Their relationship has a lot more back and forth than before, with her opening up and speaking her mind more often, including saying that Jack “made a career” out of trying to get Vane to think of him as a proper pirate haha. But, back on The Walrus, it’s the Silver and Billy conversation that I really want to discuss. Just last season Silver was insisting he didn’t “believe” in Flint, and now he’s talking about how Flint has conjured his desires into reality. Of course, he’s not wrong. It’s quite similar to the bit about Miranda being a witch: not literally true, but metaphorically true all the same. Flint’s state of mind *does* become their reality that he draws them all into. That’s the kind of power and influence he has. “Who’s more powerful, the one who made the storm, or the one who convinced us into a battle to defeat it? A man of his capacities, his state of mind becomes reality. We are subject to it. And now his state of mind is so dark it threatens to kill us all.” But what he says afterward…about how Flint becoming “the greatest villain in the new world” is torture for Flint, is completely true. Again, you can see how heavily everything he has done sits on Flint’s shoulders. He has never wanted to be the villain. HATES being the villain. Yet he can’t turn back now. He has to play his part. Because the moment he stops, there will be nothing left for him.

Eleanor and Rogers talk about the best way to get his message out to the people of Nassau. I like how Eleanor becomes “the one asking questions” and quickly uncovers the true motive behind why Rogers wants to do things quickly at Nassau. They have a very serious deadline because of Spain, and only eight weeks to accomplish the mission to secure the fort and its contents. Don’t have a lot to say about it beyond that. Oh, except one thing: V UNGR JBBQRF EBTREF. Finally, we go to The Walrus, where they have been stuck in the Doldrums for *12* days. That monologue given by one of the crew about how they are all “dead men” is incredibly haunting. And everyone really does look like they’re just wasting away. Inside Flint’s cabin, we see him and Silver and Billy discussing the realities of the situation. I like how…heavy…this feels, if that makes sense? Not in terms of what they are discussing, but how the weight of it seems like it can be felt and seen on the actors. When Flint says that they have to feed some of the men and not others for the sake of the collective survival, the words don’t come easily to him. He doesn’t feel good about it, and didn’t come to this choice easily. He’s also probably right: they need to be able to sail ship, and if they’re all too weak to do so then they will die anyway. But of course Silver’s reaction is also very understandable. And, even if Flint is right, he’s also clearly not of sound mind right now. It’s hilarious to hear him talk to Billy about how dehydration will get to them all, that they might start experiencing hallucinations…as if he hasn’t been having those for a while now. “Loss of reason, anger, eventually hallucinations…” yeah, that doesn’t describe you at all right Flint? Hell, even when Billy asks if all of this has been driving Flint mad, Flint can’t answer. I don’t think he *knows* the answer.

We open on a beach, with Max and Anne making a business deal with a truly awful man. Anne puts it quite well: “A world where he’s the civilized one and we’re the savages is a world I’m never gonna fucking understand.” And of course, the show emphasizes this by having the man refer to Max in really awful ways and give terrible backhanded compliments about how she can “behave” like a civilized woman. I do love how Anne is immediately ready to kill him haha. And I like how you can tell that it isn’t as if these things don’t affect Max, but rather that she is used to it. And surviving within civilization has required her to pretend as if such things don’t hurt her. Of course, the bigger point is Max and Anne learning about the new governor that’s on the way. Good thing Max had already started this exchange process, otherwise not only would they not have started to secure their own parts of the gold, but they wouldn’t have learned this information until even later. They’ve already been caught on the back foot, but 12 days to prepare is better than nothing.

cosmotron

Going a little out of order on this one, because I really want to talk about Max and Anne in the cave. I like how Anne has noticed the way Max has avoided voicing her thoughts on why she will be staying, instead of going with Anne. Because it’s true: Max has deliberately avoided that. And considering that in season one she was willing to run away and be with Eleanor, it might seem strange to some. It’s really not, but more on that in a second. “Why the fuck would you want to live in a world that says that fat pig on the beach is to be respected? That wants its sons to become that?” “When I was very small, I would sneak out of the slave quarters at night to the main house. I would stand outside the window of the parlor. I would stand amongst the heat and the bugs and the filth on my toes to see inside. Inside that house was a little girl my age…with the most beautiful skin. I watched her dance while her father played music and her mother sewed. I watched her read and eat and sing and sleep, kept safe and warm and clean by her father. My father. The things it took to make that room possible, they were awful things. But inside that room was peace. That is what home is to me.” That really just lays it all out there, doesn’t it? Max wants peace and safety and love. She tried to get it from Eleanor initially, to find that home with her, but then that was destroyed. So now she is trying to forge it for herself. And she knows that no matter how far she runs, civilization will always be on their heels trying to catch up. So she’s not going to run. She’s going to plant her feet and try to build a foundation among the shifting sands. A place where she can have that peaceful room she’s always dreamed of. And you can see that Anne does get it. She understands where these feelings come from, and her eyes fill with tears when Max admits the truth about her father. I love that kiss on the head that Anne gives her, and the soft way she says “I trust you” when Max says that Anne should stay to make sure she is dividing their share evenly. That trust was very hard won, and you can see how much that statement means to Max as well.

I’m very curious if you both have watched more episodes, and what point you’re at if you have. 👀

Hey everyone, I'm delighted to share with you all my very first Black Sails REACTION 🥳 Reaction starts 1:26 , Review starts 8:36 . Flint blowing a dude's head off at 3:07 😉😂 https://youtu.be/DAhxndMRL9w?si=AE0Yxkw-pKnLKVDN For these videos, the reactions will be a highlight reel from my first time watching the episode, and the reviews will be a scene by scene analysis following the re-watch. As such, the reactions are more concise than the girls', but the reviews will cover every single scene beginning to end with a thumbnail from each scene in the corner as well for easier navigation. I'd love to hear from you guys what you think after watching 😀 Two months ago I never thought I'd have the courage to ever actually show my face to anyone on Patron. The responses I've gotten from both the written and filmed reviews have been so lovely that it's allowed me to get over my self-image issues long enough to actually put myself out there, and to feel excited for you guys to see me! So, I want to say thanks to all you guys for your support and nice words about the videos so far, y'all have been so kind. In particular I want to shoutout Cosmo: on top of being the inspiration for me to start my written reviews after seeing how passionate you were with yours, you've been so helpful with the feedback you've given me on the videos so far that I'm incredibly grateful of you. You are the MVP of Black Sails 👊 Lastly, girls, thank you for inspiring me with your channel to want to put my ideas out there and engage with the artform through making my own reactions. Likewise, thank you so much for letting me link the videos here; I promise that this isn't a means to an end to "self-promote" or anything like that, this is just my way of being able to give back to the same community that has given me so much over the years. For as long as you're comfortable with me doing so, I'd love to be able to share my opinions on shows this way 🙂

TeaDrinker3000

FINALLY Thank you for this Black Sails reaction.
