Violet Evergarden Episode 13 Reaction

Violet Evergarden Episode 13 Reaction

Comments

Watch the movie A Silent Voice if you want to see more of KyotoAnimation works. The animation and the story is really good and kyotoani did a great job with this movie

Nemelios

I just finished the second movie, and I'm honestly wondering if I watched the same film as others in the comments here. Like the film doesn't treat Violet and Gilbert's relationship any different than the show. They just came across as platonic soulmates in my view. I can understand if people preferred the show's ending, but the movie doesn't go where others here claim. Not really looking to argue or diminish others' opinion on the movie, I'm just confused by some of the comments here.

Elvis

Yes the first movie is so beautiful, and doesn’t have the issues some people have with the second…hope there ends up being a reaction for it

BNichols1235

Super late here. The first movie is great, and you can just watch the first one without needing to see the second one. There is further development for Violet’s character and experience. I think the first one is an overall wholesome watch and I actually wish the first movie was part of the series

My Toasty Toast

The first movie is called "Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll" and its the uncontroversial one, so if you want more Violet content without ruining the show for you then its a safe option since its just a little side adventure, the 2nd controversial movie is called "Violet Evergarden: The Movie" and it acts as a direct sequel to the show and I already talked about it in the comment above.

Markub El Jaden

I was one of the people who said that the love between Violet and the Major was left ambiguous in the show and that you can view it as platonically/parental if you want to and I remember a lot of people attacking me and telling that it was obviously not that case and that the show made it very clear that they were romantically in love, but you two just finished the show and I think you can agree with me that there was nothing that was *explicitly* romantic about their relationship (as in "you can't see it any other way") and as someone who watched the movies, I can tell you that their relationship in them was as ambiguous as it was in the show. So if you couldn't see anything problematic about their relationship in the show, you wouldn't see anything problematic in the movie either in my opinion.

Markub El Jaden

its really as simple as the story isnt over, the author wrote more, its not supposed to completely end there despite how good of an ending it it, it's still lacking things that get explored more in the movie. anyone can have their opinion on not watching the rest because they didnt like it (but thats only after theyve watched and judged it for themselves), but its honestly a disservice to the author and story itself to not finish it just because others have said its not how they wanted it. and as said before the movie is typically widely regarded as a very beautiful good movie so that just makes it even more frustrating when theres a group of people telling you to not finish the story. people can formulate their own thoughts once theyve watched it for themselves.

Toidleboy

It’s true not every aspect of it it’s bad, I’d say the overall majority of the movie is pretty bad tho, the execution is terrible, especially of the ending. And I’m sorry but no amount of context it’s gonna change the fact that Gilbert and Violet are in a sick love relationship, and that seeing Violet smiling together with her friends and continuing her job as a Doll travelling around the world is immensely better than seeing her stay forever with Gilbert and only Gilbert at the age of 18, her no more being a Doll and no more travelling to experience and understand new emotions (instead she stays on a tiny island in middle of the sea). Well, I’d say we already expressed our position well enough. I wish I could love this movie but I just can’t, if LM watches it I hope they like it.

Sebox

I still think you’re exaggerating the description with a discouraging tone though You’re skipping the context of the movie themes in your comments and selectively highlighting certain parts, making it seem like it was all just very “bad” Just because one didnt particularly like the ending or course of the movie doesn’t mean it was not executed well overall But anyway, again, to each their own 😬

Ray

Based on everything you both said in the end discussion I guess my recommendation would be to just not watch that final movie. I agree with you both, this is a PERFECT ending to the story and I still cant understand why it was continued when it was already so perfectly wrapped up. Like Lola, i am able to kind of separate my enjoyment of the show vs that final movie but I won’t lie, if i had known what that final movie was about I prob would not have watched it. However, I don’t think it ruins everything for me, it’s just frustrating because it is not as good as an ending as this was. At the end of the day the decision is yours, but just taking into account everything you said in this discussion, I don’t see how it will be enjoyable for the both of you. These 13 episodes are so damn beautiful and will forever be one of my all time favorite shows so I am glad you both enjoyed it!

Daniel Molina

I’m calling the police 💀

Kaycee

If you want my coherent thoughts on it I already expressed them in another comment. I’m sorry, but the fact that you are a film major doesn’t mean your opinion on a narrative choice is absolute, it’s not a matter of “it is like this whether you like it or not”. It’s a narrative choice based on a character’s already established journey throughout a 13 eps series, and everyone is free to criticize that same choice if they think it doesn’t make sense. I don’t think it was necessary to complete the story, and even LM said they are 100% satisfied with this ending and they wouldn’t even need the movies is they weren’t out. Which means that I’m not alone in thinking that the relationship in question was indeed already completed in the anime and didn’t need any further closure. If they do watch it then it’s okay of course, but something tells me they will not like it. Maybe not all of it, but at least some (very important) elements I’m sure they won’t.

Sebox

I wish 😭😭

V

Did I say anywhere that people can’t enjoy the movies or are bad people if they do? The only movie I don’t like and I would want them to avoid is the sequel one, the other one is great, even if at times it feels dragged out. If LM want to make a poll then it’s ok, it’s probably for the better because at least we settle what the majority wants and roll with it.

Sebox

It just seems to me you can’t handle a person responding with a different opinion heavily criticizing the movie you adore. Telling people to not respond to other positive comments on the movie with their negative view on it sounds much worse to me. I respond with my personal opinion under the comments I want to respond to, I’m not doing anything wrong and you’re getting pressed for nothing. As you said, LM have the right to do what they want, if the want to watch the movie I’ll shut my mouth and that’s it. But since this is the comment section of the final episode and everyone is rightfully expressing their opinion on whether or not they should watch the sequel movie, I believe I have the right to respond to all the comments I don’t agree with. LM aren’t kids, they won’t base their decision solely on my responses at all. They asked us to answer them if the movie goes down a certain route and I said as much in my comment. Am I being harsh on the movie? Yes, because I don’t like it and I’m expressing so in the comments. Would I prefer if they didn’t watch it? Yes. Am I doing something to force them to not watch it? No. I’m merely commenting on the movie content and not attacking anyone personally. If you can’t handle that much it sounds like a you-problem to me. If you don’t agree with me then let’s have a discussion about it. Actually we were already having it under your comment, but you decided to write this one comment warning everyone that a dangerous individual is going around responding with very negative opinions on the movie under other people’s positive opinions on it. I assure you, I’m not a threat to anyone’s life. I hope freedom of speech is still a thing tho, that would be good.

Sebox

Hunter today? 😭

Wallas

Based on your criteria, you girls should watch the first movie, but not the second one. I hope we see a reaction to the first film :)

craftmania

If you're worried about their experience, they dismiss and tend not to read the negative comments. I know Lola sometimes reads them b/c they are funny, but they really don't care much based on what they've said on previous shows/videos. Hope this makes you feel better! I didn't read a single comment on this video except yours, haha. So my experience is completely fine! Ignorance is bliss especially when you know it's something you CAN and SHOULD ignore.

Komikall

So now responding to people I don’t agree with means getting worked up, and I thought commenting was a normal thing, imagine thinking that. - Wow so cool, she went from travelling around the world, getting to know vastly different places, scenarions and emotions, to writing letters for people in a small ass island in the middle of nothing. Such a step up for her character. - The movies says that, there’re 0 implications she saw her friends again and the fireworks scene when only Violet is absent is further proof of that. If the movie wanted me to believe otherwise then it should have showed it, who cares about the official art, you have 2h and 30 minutes worth of time and you don’t even show me one scene of Violet being happy and at ease with the friends she encountered and developed with throughout the series. So much for that huh? “I don’t understand why Violet isn't allowed to separate from her friends; that's just how life works”, no that’s just how the movie works, and we can criticize its writing, especially if it’s bad. How is her being alone with Gilbert instead of being with all the people she met in those 4 years considered better is beyond me. If anything show Gilbert together with the others too, but nah can’t do that. - What are you even on about, Gilbert wants to stay forever with her and the post credit scene of the movie has Violet and Gilbert touching little fingers looking at each other, how can that be seen as not romantic? Why would a father-daughter relationship show that? It’s not “my” fault I see it that way, it’s the movie’s fault for being unable to showcase a realistic non-romantic relationship between the two (which it isn’t). And LM will interpret it in the same way, be sure of that. - That’s what it implies dude, “stay forever with me”, how is that gonna be possible without her quitting her job and previous life? “And that’s what Violet wants”, yeah I guess fk being a Doll and fk anyone else who isn’t Gilbert, let’s stay forever with the 15-years-older-than-her-dude in an island instead of travelling and exploring new horizons like the series’ ending, that sounds so much better yup. - The scene with the dying kid is copied from ep 10, unoriginal and made to prolong the movie even further. Iris and Erica are also useless because of the cheap excuse that technology is advancing. So instead of seeing Violet or Iris find a new job that they like we see the first one end up how she did and Iris becoming even more useless, literally what is even the purpose of her character in the movie. Look, I’m not here to change your opinion on the movie, I’m not here to tell you not to like it. I respond to your positive comment on it with my negative comment on it, it’s just how different opinions work.

Sebox

im seeing the exact same thing its sad honestly. to be fair i expect nothing less of those writing behind the wall of a screen in the first place though so it is what it is. sucks people want to push agenda's just because it didnt fit their personal taste/narrative

Toidleboy

lmao sebastiano id love to hear your actual coherent thoughts on it in that regard then. as a film major, i can tell you from years of experience in the medium that yes, they do handle it well, and whether or not you like it, it was necessary to complete the story. like i said i agree it could have gone a slightly different way and achieved the same or better conclusion, but they DO execute the story well and it does fall well into the already established characters as a finale. so by all means think what you want but its a good movie.

Toidleboy

I have to express my disappointment with what's happening in this comment section. It's clear that mentioning anything positive about the final movie immediately leads to passive attacks from someone. It feels like they attempt to push their opinions on others, creating an environment where everyone is expected to agree that they hate this movie and make it seem like a bad thing that we enjoyed the movie. This is just wrong and makes me angry. Everyone has the right to their own opinion, including Milena and Lola. Everyone should decide for themselves whether they like or dislike something, and we should also be able to express our love for this movie. Because, believe it or not, many people loved this movie and I’m sure that some don’t even want to admit in this comment section that they loved it as well because as you can see you get immediately “attacked” for it. This just ruined it all for me, and I used to be so excited to see them reacting to Violet's ENTIRE story. I regret signing up on Patreon now. Love or hate this movie. I don’t care. But let everyone have their own opinion and don’t make them feel bad about it!

LostinAoT

I personally love the movies I think they are amazing works of art. I respect your reasoning for not likeing it but I have a question does that mean other people cant enjoy the movies and if they do are they bad people? Since the comments are so split 50/50 I think a poll would be the fairest thing to do here.

Golden nugget 817

I’m neither trying to change anyone’s opinion nor forcing my opinion onto anyone else. I’m just stating my opinion in response to a comment I disagree with. Nothing “horrible” about that.

Sebox

To many people they are a must watch tho because everyone is allowed to have their own opinion. So let us have our own opinion and don’t try to change them and stop pushing your opinion onto us; that’s a horrible thing to do

LostinAoT

I disagree, and you might want to consider adjusting your tone if you're aiming for a normal discussion. Your current tone comes across as aggressive, which can lead people to think you're looking for an argument about their opinions. Spoilers! - The movie clearly conveyed that auto memory dolls have no future due to the telephone, rendering them jobless eventually. However, it also showed that Violet continued to write numerous letters for the people on the isolated island, where telephones were likely absent for a long time. Hence, she's probably one of the few from their group who kept her job. - Who says she leaves them forever, huh? They can still visit each other, and there is official art depicting them all visiting Violet and Gilbert on the island. I don't understand why Violet isn't allowed to separate from her friends; that's just how life works. - Wrong. The movie never confirmed, in any shape or form, that they had a romantic relationship after she stayed with him. They left it open intentionally for people to interpret it as they want. They never kissed, they never married; they just hugged. You just decided to interpret it romantically and that’s your own fault. - He never told her to quit everything else, though. When they finally reunited, his emotions took over, and after ignoring her for so long, he finally told her how he really feels and said that he would like her to stay with him. That's what Violet wanted as well; it was her own free will and what made her the happiest. And again, who wouldn't react like that? Tell me how a normal person wouldn't want to stay with the person they love most in this world after not seeing them for actual years! -The scene with the dying kid was a beautiful and sad moment. Again, it aimed to show us that the world doesn't really need auto memory dolls anymore because they now have a telephone that can actually get the job done (Iris and Violet couldn't at that moment).

LostinAoT

They said they won’t be able to separate the show from the movie. Spoiler alert if needed: The movie destroys Violet’s character, journey and development, and goes down the unnecessary creepy route with that relationship. She quits her job, she quits being with her friends and throughout the movie we see that she isn’t able to move on with her life unless she’s with Gilbert, that she’s still dependent from him. Quite literally the opposite of the series’ finale and a slap in the face of its themes. But as you said, to each their own.

Sebox

“The movie treats her character with love and care” Spoiler alert: - She quits being a Doll at 18 years old, literally 4 years of her life writing letters around the world and that’s it. - She leaves forever her friends to live with Gilber in a random island in the middle of nowhere. - There’s a romantic relationship with the dude who is 15 years older than her, the same dude that raised her like a daughter only to somehow fall in love with her. - From “Live, be free” in the series to “I want you to stay forever with me so quit everything else”. - Unoriginal subplot with the dying kid writing letters for his parents and brother for after his death, straight up copied from episode 10. Oh yes, it’s gonna be so good to watch their reaction to Violet not being with all of her friends watching the fireworks together but instead being with Gilbert, marrying him, leaving her job as a Doll and throw her development down the toilet. Peak conclusion, am I right?

Sebox

I disagree Also, I don’t understand the negativity or the big deal about it “Hate the show” is a bit of an exaggeration don’t you think? lol but to each their own

Ray

The movie absolutely does not handle it well, the relationship is turned into garbage just like Violet’s character. I’d like to see your face when they start cringing in the last 15 minutes and tell us in the review that they hate where Violet’s character ended its journey and that it was better if they didn’t watch it.

Sebox

“It wraps up the story” there is quite literally nothing to wrap up, the sequel movie will waste 2 hours and 30 minutes of their life and make them hate the show, why do you guys want that for them I still don’t understand.

Sebox

They are very much not a “must” watch, the series perfectly stands on its own. The sequel movie especially, since it throws Violet’s character out of the window, that’s why people think the sequel movie can be skipped.

Sebox

Yeah and the poll should be: “Do you want us to start hating Violet Evergarden, yes or no?” Because that’s gonna be the actual result of the poll.

Sebox

The series already concludes everything for every character, the sequel movie is unnecessary and undermines all of Violet’s journey and development. But if you want them to start hating the show then go ahead.

Sebox

But they do care, they clearly said it in their review. And we’re talking about a 15 years age difference. No amount of mental gymnastics will make it any less vomit inducing.

Sebox

I didn’t mind spoiling myself so I read this, and my eyebrows kept raising until they disappeared into my hairline. That…really does sound like a complete reversal of the themes that the anime series established, and a setback for her character.

cosmotron

The sequel movie spits in the face of the series and Violet’s character development. No reason to let a movie ruin the show for you, and anyone who actually listened to the last few minutes of the review will agree. It does go down that route, and it sucks. The series is already perfect as it is.

Sebox

In the last movie Violet is 18 years old. That's the reason why many don't care much that it's a romantic story.

David Brown

I disagree

David Brown

Exact. There is no point in not watching the movies. It's like you haven't seen the last AOT movies.

David Brown

The last film is mainly pure art. The series has an open ending, and this is because the film concludes everything, absolutely everything, because it has two timelines. I can't say more because it would be a spoiler, but the story connects with one of the best chapters of the series in a direct and masterful way. You don't know you need to see it until once.

David Brown

From your discussion, i think you really shouldn't watch the movies. I loved them personally but considering what you want/don't want, just end your Violet journey here.

Sonia Amiar

It would be a real shame if you didn't see the movies. I don't understand why people say they shouldn't watch them. It is essential to see them. The movies conclude everything. Pay the subscription to see the reaction to the movies. Mainly the last ones.

David Brown

Nichijou is class. I'm also fond of Hyouka

ridleymon

I want to add one of my favorite sci-fi shows and one of the most popular from Kyoto Animation, "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya ". Definitely a cult show. I don't think it's for everyone's taste, but I recommend giving it a try. It's available on Crunchyroll. It's funny because there was a real mathematical theorem proved thanks to this show. The first time it aired, it was in a non-chronological order, but I recommend following the Crunchyroll order, maybe with the exception of episode 25. It's a funnier experience to watch episode 25 before episode 01. For the list you mentioned, my favorite one is Clannad. Of all the anime I have watched in my entire life, Clannad has been the show that made me cry the hardest several times, from sadness but also from happiness, especially the second part, Clannad After Story.

refo44

As the girls, i really love the anime and its conclusion so i never bothered to watch the movies but i heard that the second was bad because of Gilbert, that his character was not shown in a good light but i didn't know it was this bad... They will hate that for sure and it will ruin Violet for them.

sakurabraus

Oh, and since you asked for it: Here is a list of productions from Kyoto Animation: - Clannad (Sentimental Drama Comedy Romance, 2007-2009, 46 episodes, #12 in MAL Top List) - A Silent Voice (Sentimental Drama Romance, 2016, movie, #13 in MAL Top List) - Nichijou (Slice of Life Comedy, 2011, 26 episodes, #85 in MAL Top List) - K-On (Slice of Life Comedy, 2011, 41 episodes, #116 in MAL Top List) - Sound! Euphonium (Slice of Life Drama, 2015-2024 [season 3 in April], 27+ episodes, #135 in MAL Top List) Since the arson attack, Kyoto Animation has released Miss Obayashi's Dragon Maid, Tsurune, Free! and soon Euphonium. So they're already back to a pretty decent output.

Robert H.

I'm already looking forward to the Ranking Of Kings reactions <3

Wallas

The anime is so beautiful. Enjoy the final. 🥺

Robert H.

I can't believe I catched uo and in the end I still didn't watch the finale when they posted it 💀 tonight shall be it 🫡

sand_fl

I also finished watching their discussion today and it's very clear: the second movie is a no-go for them because the movie paints an ending that is worse than their worst-case scenario.

Robert H.

I'll spoil the second movie completely now: First, the story begins with a great idea: a character 50 years after the end of the anime works as a narrator of events in Violet's life. Instead of possibly seeing a sequence in which several years pass by as Violet lived her life in the end, we get the chance to see a character who grew up in a time when letter writing no longer played a major role, learn from Violet's life and write a letter in her current situation to express her feelings. It's also a nice element to show the effect of the anime on the viewer. Many started writing letters to friends and family as a result. But we learn of the first terrible plot relatively early on through the person of the future: Violet stops working at the post office at the age of 18 and no further letters or texts from her are revealed. That already hints at something very unpleasant, but I'll go into it when we get there. Finally, we see more of Dietfried and Violet. Their relationship has changed completely. They are much closer, more understanding and we learn more about their childhood and relationship with their father. Every scene with Dietfried is great. He is my favorite character in the movie. Also, the case Violet has in this movie, a sick little boy who wants goodbye letters to his family in case he dies (similar to episode 10/11), is very nice, but a little too repetitive for me personally. Kyoto Animation should have come up with a new motif in my opinion. Now we come to the main plot: Gilbert is alive. I would have been OK with that, but in the movie Violet is no longer shown happy like at the end of the anime, but more sad and cold again. She refuses to go out with her friends and colleagues because she would rather work and only think about Gilbert. Violet is shown to be incredibly dependent on Gilbert, she doesn't live without him, she just exists. She even pushes away the care of Hodgins. They try to show that Violet needs closure with Gilbert in order to be happy. In my opinion, Kyoto Animation should have shown her happy and show her sad when she learns that Gilbert is alive or his body was found in Intense or another event. By showing her sad from the beginning and being repulsive to her friends, it revises the ending of the anime. I found Gilbert's decision to go into hiding and work as a teacher in former enemy territory due to guilt very fitting. The first interactions between Violet and Gilbert were also great to watch. Unfortunately, however, from minute 122 onwards, everything is run down. Gilbert basically says: "Give up your newly built life. You must hate working under Hodgins and with your friends, doing fun things with them. Leave it all behind and move in with me." A romantic relationship is hinted at, but not shown. In general, Gilbert comes across as a creepy selfish asshole from here on. I find it particularly unbearable how everyone in the post office goes to a fireworks display in Leiden and Violet is not with them to say goodbye, not meeting with them still regularly and maintaining the friendship, but is with Gilbert, far away. If it had ended with her still working at the Post Office but now visiting Gilbert once a month and talking to him regularly on the phone (the new technology, themed in the movie), then it would have been a nice ending. Ultimately, the movie screams: Violet is nothing without Gilbert, unhappy and just existing. The implied romantic relationship is really just the rotten cherry on the moldy cake. The fact that she wants to help people with her actions, the writing of letters, wants to make amends for her deeds in the war, was simply thrown away in the movie. And I felt particularly sorry for Iris' character. She's the least favorite doll in the post office and continues to chase her desire to be the best doll in Leiden. Instead of giving her a nice conclusion to her character like Erica, her dream is denied. Anyone who has finished watching or listening to your discussion about how you want to know if the worst-case scenario you've painted will happen should realize that you're going to hate the second movie.

Robert H.

Yeah same. I was very excited to see them reacting to the movies and will be disappointed if they don’t

LostinAoT

Not gunna lie I’m quite disappointed that you are dismissing the films because a lot of people do really love them. I know it’s been polarizing in the Patreon comments but they are rated highly (particularly the last film) for a reason. But hey it’s your channel at the end of the day. And I’m excited for Ranking of Kings!

Sacha

Kyoto animation are basically proficient in making people cry. Apart from Violet, they also animated Clannad, which considered to be a champion of anime tear jerkers, even though it's genre is a rom-com. A Silent Voice is also one of the big names.

terrier

I personally liked the movies, and they made sense, but after watching them I just didn't feel like they've improved the story for me. So I would rate Violet Tv series 10/10, and both movies maybe 8/10, since the most important part (Violet development) was perfectly incapsulated in the TV show.

terrier

Anyone saying they should watch the movie clearly didn’t listen to their discussion. They give several reasons why they would not enjoy it

Benjamin Harris

I think it would be fair to have a poll for the movies. Who else agrees?

Golden nugget 817

The movies are must watch, no idea how could anyone think they aren't...

sisoko

I’ll vote for NOT watching the movie… the ideas and themes of its story are really contradictory to the ones of the show. When rewatching the show I just pretend that’s where it ends…

Benjamin Harris

I really do love how it culminated in Violet finally writing to the Major. Definitely got me emotional, and I really liked the journey Violet’s character went on. The ending felt a bit ambiguous, but seemed to imply she was meeting the Major just by how she reacted to whoever she saw. I agree with what you said in the discussion though - I got to the end and really didn’t feel like I needed more, or that I wanted the major to show up - if he did, it would need more time to show that properly. Something tells me that’s what is in one of the movies. So…I dunno, I don’t feel super interested in the movies and feel pretty good about where the show left. But if you guys are watching then I’ll end up checking them out eventually. So, I’m glad I gave this show another shot! I still have some issues with it but I did end up enjoying the experience and connected with it emotionally.

cosmotron

Even if you don't watch the second movie, which would be understandable, I would highly suggest you watch the first movie. It's basically a long OVA, and it's heartful, has a wonderful story, and I'm sure you would adore it!

A Potato

I'd love for them to do Fruits Basket too! I know Ranking of Kings is next, but it's kinda funny that Violet got picked to do more shows with female main characters and then the one picked immediately after it doesn't have that lol. Which isn't a knock against RoK, it's just kinda funny. But Fruits Basket would be great.

cosmotron

I'm really glad you two enjoyed this so much, its been one of my favorite reactions! I hope you watch more shows like this in the future. I would highly recommend Fruits Basket. It also has a female lead thats one of my favorite characters ever. It's a really great drama with lots of deep and interesting characters, found families, romance, and a very salifying ending too! It's only 3 seasons too.

Jason Parker

I absolutely loved the final movie! It continues and wraps up the story so I don’t understand why some people are adamant on not watching them The arguments I’ve seen is all about the matter of their taste or what not, which I think okay fine but not a reason for others not to watch them But yes I still highly recommend watching it

Ray

Yes, I am kind of shocked to see so many negative comments about the final movie since I’ve only heard great things about the movie (as a whole) so far!

LostinAoT

the last movie is incredible and expands upon/wraps up many other storylines and characters that didnt wrap up fully in only the anime episodes alone. that said, many people (seems to be the louder minority because as a whole the movie is VASTLY well received) do not like a certain aspect of it, me included on that one specific thing, but they DO handle it well for what it is. i think most people just want it to end the way they want in their minds so they dont want you to watch them for that reason. you should really just watch it and judge for yourself, they are definitely worth seeing in that right, its the end of the story.

Toidleboy

I say YES to watching the movies. Especially the final one is a must watch! I enjoyed the movies a lot and they both have great ratings on IMDb (that just speaks for itself that the majority LOVED this movie). I’m kind of surprised that so many people on here don’t like it and they are so vocal about it lol. As it was already mentioned the movies still treat their characters with love and care and tell great stories. And since they had a higher budget the animation is even more beautiful and breathtaking. Personally, I really liked the ending of the final movie and it completed Violet’s story perfectly but I can see why some people wouldn’t like it but imo that’s just a matter of how you interpret everything since the anime left it very open. I completely agree with Violet’s choices and would have done the same. But you should decide for yourself if you like them or not (I mean … many told you that the ending of AoT is shit and you ended up liking it sooo … it is better to form your own opinions imo 😅) I truly think you both would enjoy the final movie and interpret it the right way (and yes I’ve watched their discussion and still think they would love it) I don't understand why so many people try so damn hard to portray the movies in the worst possible light. If they don’t want to see your reaction to the movie they don’t have to watch your reaction. I just think you deserve to form your own opinion just like we all did and I think you’re missing out on a beautiful movie and the beautiful story that it wants to tell if you don’t even try to give it a chance. And let’s be honest, Violet deserves that you finish her story and see how far she’s come at the end!

What else I can say as you have been talking about this for quite a while in the discussion: If the second movie ended with Gilbert alive and having romantic feelings for Violet, it would still be better for me personally than the ending we ultimately got in the second movie. But that's my personal opinion. 😅 So if that's already a reason for you not to watch it, then don't watch the second movie. What is happening is much worse for me.

Personally enjoy both films, having rewatched them both this month. Never really understood the hate for them, the first movie is basically a long episode that doesn’t really affect Violet’s overall character arc/growth so it’s more time with a character I love as well as a lot of time with Benedict. The second film concludes Violet’s story (takes place several years after the series), has some really great character work for Hodgins, Gilbert’s brother and Violet. As someone who felt similarly, im always happy there is more Violet Evergarden, and the amount of care to its characters, animation, themes and music is what makes the show so special; the movies continue with that care imo.

I always thought that the person Violet saw at the end of the episode was us - the viewer. It’s the first time she ever looks directly at us - the ones who followed her journey and watched her grow as a person. She’s surprised at first, but then smiles as if she recognized an old friend which we kind of are since we’ve been with her for such a long time. This scene also tells us that it’s our turn now - it’s our turn to write a letter, express our true feelings and send it to a person we love. And I really thinks that’s a beautiful way to interpret it.

The first movie is based on the second chapter of the third book and takes place between episodes 6 and 7 (the books tell the story non-linearly, which is why you often jump back and forth in time). Kyoto Animation has taken the story and expanded it to 90 minutes with a lot of post-plot. It feels like an OVA. The second movie has no basis in the books. Despite the same basic premise (terrorist attack with train, conflict with Dietfried, air show), the finale of the anime and the finale of the second book have been approached very differently. For example, Dietfried plays no big role at all in the fight against the anti-peace organization in the book. There were three separate stories in the book and Kyoto Animation combined them into one. In order to resolve the resulting discrepancy between the movie and the book, Kyoto Animation produced a second movie that indirectly takes up the plot from the finale of the second book and packs it into a new story. The only problem is that the book and the anime have already taken big steps apart. In the book, Violet is much harsher, more direct, older and more willing to use violence. Her magical 2 meter tall battle axe Witchcraft, which she pretty much always has with her, even when she's working as Doll, albeit folded up in her suitcase, is just one thing that comes to my mind. Ultimately, the second movie leaves you with a completely different feeling than the anime. For some fans, the second movie took the story to a new level, for others it made the anime unrewatchable. Personally, I would have preferred Kyoto Animation to have kept its own direction towards the end, as it did in the anime adaptation, instead of following the book.

I saw the movies yesterday and I looked up if there was a time skip or something because I was confused and it seems violets 18 in the final movie and it’s basically about what happens in the future and her conclusion with characters and stuff, but to be honest episode 13s conclusion is perfect so I don’t know what to think. The movie isn’t as bad as I thought it would be, some things didn’t really make sense but others did, so yeah, that’s just my view of things. Based on the review this episode you would not like the 2nd movie so maybe don’t watch it, Great reaction as always tho thanks for the episode.

Idk if I’m in the minority or majority but I hope yall don’t watch those movies 😭 obviously it’s your channel you can watch them if you want but it completely ruined the anime for me. Just seeing some of your general opinions I think you guys may dislike it.

Kaycee

I know one of the movies is meant to be the actual conclusion, but I’d be happy with this show ending here.

Hey guys, I'm posting this for the Violet fans as I know a lot of you will be sticking around for Ranking Of Kings in a few weeks time. I'm after putting together a Discord for us regular Patrons to discuss the shows further. There's separate channels for discussing shows with full series spoilers, or for no spoilers past the latest episode reacted to. There's also a channel for recommending series and anything else to one another, something we haven't been able to do since Patron got rid of Member Posts/Community tab, as well as the spreadsheet detailing everything the girls have/haven't watched. Enjoy, and Merry Christmas! https://discord.gg/YsJNAxbz

Wondering if I should just watch the normal reaction now as I won’t be able to get to the full reaction next week
