If you're looking for a quick show till you find something... Reacher on Prime. The character relationships are amazing and it's dialogue over action. Gen V on Prime. No spoilers but this show will have an impact or season 4 or The Boys. For something longer Banshee (4 seasons) is a hidden gem of a show and has a lot of faces you'd recognise from other shows.

@Wanda Did Nothing Wrong Totally agree, on all fronts. Especially on Max and Flint being two of my favorite TV characters. They’re both very complex and have great arcs, as you said. And unlike in certain spaces of the fandom, I’m confident L&M would love Max too. Tbh I never understood anyone disliking her, but that’s a whole conversation for another day.

I think Black Sails is one of only 2 shows I would class as near perfect. It is phenomenal from start to finish. There isn’t a single lull in writing, story, acting, sets, stunts, anything. And it has an actual PERFECT finale. Not a single thing I would change about it. Plus it produced two of my favourite tv characters, Flint & Max. I love them both, so much. Best character arcs on tv.

I recommend the One Piece live action. It's only 8 episodes. You get the best of both worlds. It really impressed non-anime fans about the series. (The anime/manga is even better than HxH, IMHO. both my top 3 or 4) Also the used the cancelled Black Sails set and refurbished the ships. So that should satisfy them for another series. The GOAT series that you should eventually watch is 'The Sopranos'. But One Piece live action could be a good appetizer.

Hell's Paradise is one of the animes considered part of the Dark Trio of Shonen. The others two are Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw's Man. It's great but right now I think the girls will enjoy more an anime as Ranking of King.

I believe they said they started until they got up to a sexually graphic and violent scene early in season 1. IMO the first season is definitely the weakest and it tries to ride that (at the time) GoT hype train by overdoing violence and sex in the first few episodes. Thankfully the writing gets much better and doesn’t rely on shock factor as much

It was indeed great!!! One of my favorite television shows for sure! I honestly think LM would love all the twists & turns it has and fall in love with so many characters, too. Wish they'd look into it or at least consider giving the first episode a go. Guaranteed they'd be hooked from the get go lol. Tatiana absolutely KILLS IT in the show. Orphan Black was a great sci-fi show. It's curious that it hadn't been recommended or mentioned here before. Perhaps it's Tatiana Maslany's best performance as an actress in a TV show so far. She even won an Emmy for it. And it has great plot.

If you want a short live-action show to fill in the slot of tfothu in the future then I strongly recommend it. I know you girls have watched True Detective season 1 so you must have known that every season is an independent story.

Well, I haven't watched many live-action shows so I'm just gonna root for the ones I've watched: For All Mankind and Fargo! They really don't get enough credit for how good they are. Besides, from what I've heard, the current airing season 4 is the ending season of For All Mankind, so it's the perfect time for you to get into it. And Fargo's every season is an independent story so there will be no pressure "finishing" it.

And tbh I'm struggling to think of live action shows to recommend. I do really love Fargo and Barry but I'm not sure those would be 100% your thing (I think you'd still like them though). Standing on the Black Sails hill until I die. I think it would be such a cool change of pace compared to the shows they've been watching recently. I feel like The Sopranos and Mad Men, while I know they'd love those shows and I do as well, fall in a similar vein to BB, BCS, The Wire, even Mr. Robot. I think, like The Expanse, Black Sails would be a really refreshing show and they would obviously love it as well. Mad Men and The Sopranos are also over twice the length of Black Sails which is another thing to keep in mind. Black Sails would be finished in 19 weeks with 2 a week. Sopranos 43 weeks and Mad Men 46 weeks.

Addition: Frieren still has 57 unadapted chapters after season 1 (rough estimate) and will get another 100 chapters, at least, before the story is over. Kaguya-sama still has 144 unadapted manga chapters, so it will probably get 3 more seasons. Jujutsu-Kaisen still has over 100 unadapted manga chapters, so will probably also get 3 more seasons. Demon Slayer has about 70 unadapted manga chapters, will get 2 more seasons, although I'm still convinced that Demon Slayer won't appeal to them. Bocchi the Rock also seems to be getting a movie and a second season. And since they would like to watch a show in its entirety without waiting for further seasons and content, I would have put the here mentioned shows on the waiting list for now. Haikyuu is also a bit up in the air for me because of this. The Final Part 1 comes out in February 2024, The Final Part 2 Part 1 has no date yet, but should come out in February 2025 at the latest, but The Final Part 2 Part 2 is so far away that it could be bad for them to get to know all the characters in Haikyuu over the time Jul 2024 - Jun 2025, but then sometime later for real Final to get back to them.

While I would love if it ends up being Black Sails for all the reasons other commenters have recommended it. It's got everything you girls seem to love in a show and have mentioned considering it in the past. However I'll recommend two of my favorite shows of the past few years that get no love despite being incredible Station Eleven and Silo. I haven't really seen any reaction content for either and it's a shame because I think both are worthy of exploring. I think the compelling characters and rich themes go along with stories that would really interest you girls. Just my two cents.

Most people have probably not noticed: The show that is supposed to replace The Wire is supposed to be a live action show, not an anime. Only in June or July, after HxH and Ranking of Kings, will we get the chance to push new anime shows. At the moment it will probably be something between Mad Men, Ted Laso, Sopranos, Black Sails, The Last Kingdom, For All Mankind, Narcos, Barry and Fargo. Haikyuu and Monster will probably fight for the place after HxH, maybe Spy x Family, Fruits Basket or Steins Gate (please don't...) will join them. Mushishi, Natsume or Naruto in the Oceaniz Cut (approx. 90 episodes) would be a surprise. And the anime after Ranking of Kings is somehow still completely open. I see a lot of possible options here: Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, Eighty Six, Odd Taxi, Your Lie in April, Ping Pong the Animation, Pluto, Berserk 1997, Tatami Galaxy, A Place Further than the Universe, The Promised Neverlands (Only Season 1), Banana Fish, Rainbow Nisha, Vivy, Usagi Drop, Cowboy Bebop, Psycho Pass (Season 1), Parasyte, Erased, ... Very many... Maybe after Ranking of Kings we could take the chance to remove a few popular anime movies from the list, like Silent Voice, Your Name, Spirit Away, Wolf Children, Grave of the Fireflies. Would be like 2 months with anime movies.

I’m down for the following three: True Detective (Season 1), The Sopranos or Black Sails. I haven’t watched Black Sails but I’ve been reading the comments and it seems like a great show so I’m willing to give it a chance.

For anime reactions, I again recommend "Oshi no Ko" (please, forgive my insistence ) if you're looking for another emotional and psychological rollercoaster drama with great storytelling. It's just 11 episodes and offers some interesting commentary on today's society. Alternatively, "Kaguya-sama: Love Is War" is a great choice for a heartwarming romantic comedy. Both are from the same mangaka and are slightly related as they share the same universe. They both have awesome characters.

I have to recommend FARGO for a series. It is a hugely slept on series. Loosely related to the 1996 movie (which imo is a must watch before), each season of Fargo is a totally different story (so you don't need to feel pressured to watch it all) and they're all fantastic. It is now on its 5th season.

You haven't asked for it but here's my tuppence on which show you could watch next based on the very little I know of your viewing preferences and sentiments. The Sopranos is a great show - one of the absolute very best shows of all time. You should watch it at some point. It's a long show to digest (minimum 13 episodes per season; the final season has 21 episodes) and it uses the traditionally episodic TV structure - unlike The Wire which is more akin to a novel with chapters. It's a big time investment but a rewarding experience. After watching The Wire you may be seeking a change of pace and not immediately want to dive into another show which explores the criminal class. I think Mad Men would be a great show for you to watch and analyse. It's definitely a change of pace and has a more compelling cast of characters in my opinion. The show creator was one of the main writers and producers for The Sopranos. It's a superb show and I'm sure you'll enjoy reacting to it but The Sopranos would probably gain you more subscribers due to its popularity. Maybe that's another variable you'll consider. Black Sails. I don't know anything about this show at all but it's very popular judging by the comments I see under The Wire reactions and it's rated highly elsewhere. So it looks like you have at least three excellent options to choose from so "even if [you] miss, [you] can't miss" to paraphrase Omar's words to Brother Mouzone. 😁

And, as I have been, I'm going to post about why I think Black Sails should be the next reaction series. I'm hoping it will kind of just get picked since it keeps coming in second in the polls, but even if there is a poll I hope this post will encourage people to vote for it. Black Sails is about Pirates (and those interacting with them) during the Golden Age of Piracy, but thematically it is about much more than that. I think the biggest question it asks is: What is civilization, and what does it mean to survive under it for those that it marginalizes? That of course is on top of it telling an exciting and gripping story with a big ensemble cast of characters (including some really great female characters btw). I can't rave enough about the writing itself - there are so many impactful moments of dialogue and storytelling that ties into previous moments and continues to build upon itself as it goes on. The acting is excellent across the board - even smaller characters get wonderful scenes or monologues. The show itself also looks great: it was filmed entirely on location in Cape Town, South Africa, and utilizes many practical effects (including actual giant ships that they built for filming). All of the characters are complex, and even when they do terrible things the show will somehow get you to come around and root for them again, despite it all. While it's largely serious, the show also isn't afraid to be funny: there are so many moments I can remember that made me laugh out loud and still didn't clash with the tone of the show. One of the other things Black Sails does really well is show consequences for the character's actions. There's nothing that happens in the show that doesn't have a larger ripple effect, and it's truly amazing to see how all of these branching actions by different characters can effect things, even much further down the line. If you're someone who is both fascinated by, and terrified of, the ocean, that is a feeling you will get a lot with Black Sails. While I wouldn't call it realistic in the same way The Wire is, or historically accurate (it is historical fiction after all), the way it focuses on specific details of what living like a pirate (or in this time period) would be like feels very real. You see how dangerous living on a ship is, what goes into maintaining it, how captains maintain or lose their leadership. You see what those on land have to do in order to work with/survive the pirates. And again, while it's not realistic in the same way as The Wire, I do think the social subjects it tackles and the themes it explores *are*, and continue to be felt today, even if in different ways.
