The Wire 5x03 Full Reaction

Comments

I don’t think the comedic tone is the problem. The homicide detectives pranked Kima with a dead body just last season, and Jimmy and Bunk investigated a murder while saying nothing but “fuck.” It’s pretty well established that they will joke with serious subjects.

I wonder if it would have worked better in reverse: There is a scene earlier this season where Lester jokingly suggests they knock over a liquor store for cash (since they have so much owed OT backpay). What if he had suggested to Jimmy, totally hypothetically, that the bosses would only care about policing if there was an active serial killer -- and only then if it had a sensational hook, and only then if it were white people, etc. -- and then Jimmy went out and did it, so Lester had some vague responsibility for the plan and at least we had a sense already that he sees the (theoretical!) usefulness of the idea. Jimmy's leap to inventing a serial killer and Lester's immediate buy-in is the real false step in this season. In a way, it's nice to get it over with quickly so we can spend the final 7 episodes enjoying the story. But it's also incredibly clear that they needed more time to naturally build to those two beats.

Sopranos. One thing about Sopranos is there isn’t any children getting killed. It’s arguably the greatest television show of all time and the cast is all around brilliant. Hopefully its in the next poll

"We have to kill again." lmao

Look them in the eyes, no matter who they are ....

I think the difference lies in build up. Colvin spent his entire career feeling like they're not really doing anything that matters, and they establish that fact over several episodes (and several seasons instilling that same feeling in the viewer). Hamsterdam itself feels like they tried their best to emulate what would happen if it was executed that way, the good and the bad. Back to Jimmy, I can buy him doing this. Literally his entire character from episode 1 has been about being frustrated that he can't do the job he wants to do, after Bodie and the investigation getting shuttered again he reached a boiling point. On top of that he's back to alcoholism/adultery and relapses can really do a number on you to put it lightly, it really feels like he just gives up, on himself and on his job. What comes next is pure desperation from someone that doesn't care what happens to him anymore, it's believable imo. The problem with Lester is that while yes, he also has a past of not being allowed to do good police work, he always dealt with it and accepted reality. So here he comes out of nowhere this episode, learns about what Jimmy does and instantly buys in? It even feels like the show is lampshading it by having Bunk be incredulous the entire scene. I can maybe see some world in which Lester buying in is well established and it's believable, but here it just wasn't executed well imo.

It's weird because most people would agree that it's more realistic than Hamsterdam, but it doesn't FEEL realistic, and I think that's far more important in fiction. It doesn't seem to fit with some of the character motivations and feels quite rushed, and I think those are the two main issues with it. In fact, Season 5 as a whole has issues with pacing, maybe due to the fact that it's only 10 episodes, as opposed to 12 or 13. There's also the obvious shift in tone, which is quite jarring.

Aj

For me it's the one true character hole in the whole series, but I give it the pass because the execution (no pun intended) in this episode and the subsequent episodes is so well done that it does make for fantastic storytelling, albeit with the necessation of belief-suspension. Nonetheless, I do see why people have their issues with season 5 overall, but I absolutely love it. I would probably put it on the same level of season 1, which is saying quite a lot.

Oh shit I forgot, there's 0% chance I'm catching up then oof

3 weeks mate, it’s two a week remember

The scene with Lester, Bunk and Jimmy in the room is one of my top 3 favourite scenes in this show. Bunk's face just seeing Lester encourage Jimmy, and the fact that his face was blurred but still the focus of the scene is just A+. Fuckin Jimmy lmao

hxh ?

The editing is comedic too, the cut to Lester with Bunk’s face dropping in the background Also comes shortly after the Butchie torture scene, feels like a different show tone wise

space1999

The Lester scene is where the show goes a little too goofy with it imo, he buys into it really easily and the entire scene is like a comedy. The show has plenty of comedic scenes but usually not involving serious topics like this one. The scene is funny but it falls flat for me.

Nina

Bye bye Joe 💀

space1999

"We have to kill again." is maybe my favourite joke in the whole show, despite how dark it is.

Jay Craig

Interesting think about Dominic West. He was tapped to play Mance Raider in Game of Thrones. His Mance would have been much closer to the book version. Ultimately he passed because he didn't want to be away from his family.

Girls I have only now gotten to watch your full Attack On Titan reaction video as I wanted to set aside the time on my day off to watch it properly and I just want to say thank you so much for the effort you put into sharing your thoughts both in that video and every other reaction. It says a lot that you'd say you'd happily erase your memories to watch it all over again because the pain would be worth it. It's very sweet to hear that your viewing experience was enhanced by our presence. We couldn't have asked for a better reaction series. Thank you so much! We're all looking forward to the Attack On Titan re-watch series you're going to do in 5 years time, because you love us 😊

TeaDrinker3000

I'm sooo behind on Wire reactions, have they mentioned what show they're doing when it wraps? (only 7 weeks left I need to catch up so bad 😭)

Kara

"The Adventures of Mike and Dukie" the spin off we all wanted

HenryM

Slice of life anime with the four boys and bug, one can only dream 🥲

TeaDrinker3000

My god i could just watch a whole show about Duquan and Michael having fun 😭 Think we get so many scenes with Bubs and Jimmy back to back to highlight that Bubs could easily be one of these homeless people who Jimmy is using, defiling their bodies and leaving their loved ones to mourn even harder Liked the discussion last episode, think there’s a light focus this season on satirizing shows like Dexter that dramatize murder Love the detail of Chris being unable to look Butchie in the eye like he always tries to do with his victims
