Violet Evergarden Episode 6 Reaction

Violet Evergarden Episode 6 Reaction

Comments

Spoiler Alert! As was mentioned by Levix022, you are free to interpret their relation as platonic, specially if that allows you to enjoy the show more, but from my point of view that is not the case, here are my reasons: 1. Gilbert used the word "Aishiteru" which in Japanese frequently has romantic connotations. For filial affection, other words are usually used. 2. Violet frequently thinks of Gilbert when the topic of love is brought in, but only when it is romantic love, like in episodes 1x01 and 1x06. In the upcoming 1x07 episode she is shown father-daughter affection, yet we don't get explicit Gilbert flashbacks as in those episodes. 3. The second movie makes very clear that his intentions were always romantic and they end up together as a couple. You can, of course, ignore the movie, but I think my point still stands. in any case, according to Barthes' "Death of the Author", the intentions of the producers of the show are irrelevant anyway, so, if you still see it as a platonic thing I have no problem with that . The reason I wanted to voice my opinion is that this very large age gap belongs to a very unfortunate trope that I hope can be avoided in the future if people keep complaining. Besides, Milena and Lola are clearly seeing that way, so I see it as kind of a waste of time to try to convince them that Gilbert's love was not supposed to be taken romantically.

Krul

SPOILER! I don’t know if you watched the second movie or not but it became obvious that it was a romantic relationship and they got married in the novel. But sure, you can interpret it the way you want to if it will help you to enjoy the show more.

LostinAoT

As someone who watched the entire show no interaction between Violet and the major were "explicitly" romantic (as in you can't see it in any other way beside that), all of them were very ambiguous toward the very end and I don't know if the author confirmed their love to be romantic or not (and I wouldn't put it past them to do it), but I don't think its wrong to choose to view their love as platonic or familial if it will help you enjoy the show more.

I wouldn't say clearly, as someone who watched the entire show no interaction between Violet and the major were "explicitly" romantic (as in you can't see it in any other way beside that). Now I don't know if the author confirmed their love to be romantic or not and I wouldn't put it past them to do it, but I don't think its wrong to choose to view their love as platonic or familial if it will help you enjoy the show more.

Just wanted to say, since people keep saying otherwise, that Gilbert clearly meant his "I love you" in a romantic way and not in a father-daughter kind of way. I love this show, it is one of my favorites, but I don't see the point of trying to pretend that Gilbert was not a creep when saying that. I wish the show would have handled this (and episode 5 for that matter) differently, but pretending is not there is not gonna make it go away.

Hey Robert, do you think it would be a good idea to suggest to the girls that they make a separate video discussing AOT after they post their review to the series finale? Maybe after about a week, after they read all our comments with extra info, interpretations and analysis, they can make a follow-up video, as I doubt they'll be in the headspace for full-series retrospection having watched the finale, and like us they'll most likely have to re-watch certain scenes or sequences.

TeaDrinker3000

They’ll only get a chance to watch it tomorrow, highly doubt the edited version will come out until Wednesday at the very least, probably later

Darrach

Someone answer this, are they uploading AOT tomorrow morning or Tuesday Morning

Mingo

I agree with you. My issue wasn’t the content or the message, just the execution and directing

@Orr Malus Obviously possible spoilers for next year's new chapter: It's been hinted that it will center heavily around Levi and go into a bit about how he's helping people after the Rumbling, why he's traveling with Gabi and Falco as his new squad, and possibly we'll learn what Yelena's new goals are for the future since she's also helping with the reforestation after the Rumbling.

@Robert H. " For the last 3 weeks I've been seeing Gaza on Eldia and the USA + Israel on Marley edited again in some Attack on Titan forums." Hahahaha. Well it's plainly obvious that Marley represented the USA and Eldia a breakaway colony of Germany since the start. Funny how life imitates art in regards with the current conflict du-jour. The brilliant aspect of AoT is how well Isayama explained that sometimes war is inevitable no matter how reasonable both sides are. Regardless, any rumors on next year's traditional "AoT: Final Chapter"? Controversy generates interest and it seems too good of an opportunity for the publishers to ignore.

Orr Malus

I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion but what matters here is what Milena and Lola think of the ending :) And I hope they love it

Here is my two cents on the finale. I think it was a great ending to a great show. The convo between armin and eren can look like cringe but if one truly understood the characters it makes sense. Also they did refine and improve the dialogue of armin in the episode compared to the manga. The finale did a better job at showing that armin was not at all happy with eren deciding to do genocide, but armin realised that it was too late and there was nothing that he can do. So I think what armin said last to eren was to make his best friend not feel the burden of it all alone. Not that he agreed with eren or was okay with genocide. And regarding the end credit panels, it showed that conflict will always arise wherever people lived at some point ( remember what Erwin said " Humanity will never stop fighting itself until it shrinks to a size of one or fewer ". To those who said eren or the whole show didnt achieve anything due to this, I would like to say that Eren wanted to see his friends live a long life without having to fight anymore threats ( which he basically did achieve ) and what happens to the world like 2000 years after they all passed away has nothing to do with what eren wanted. Also, In short I believe attack on titan at the end of the day became a tragic love story of Mikasa and the boy who seeked freedom and I am here for it.

Deno Baanu

Hi Robert. Since you are the GOAT can you please let Milena and Lola know about the new OP and ED so that they would react to it. Thanks

Deno Baanu

Not be dismissive but No Requiem and other AOE headcanon’s to me reeks of copium, as the kids call it, as well as a general misunderstanding of the story’s themes and direction. Looking at the plot points on a white sheet of paper, I think the ending and plot points are totally appropriate and fine. I just take issue with the execution. At the risk of repeating myself ad-nauseam, there was an opportunity to wrap it up more cohesively than the manga did, and the more I think about the ending the more I find myself more disappointed that they didn’t. I almost wonder if it would have been worth it making 139 it’s own special episode, to explore the unexplored in the manga

My Toasty Toast

It's really bad. And what always bothered me: If you write something positive about Floch or negative about Mikasa, simply because he is a well-written character or she has a few weaknesses in the fourth season, comments quickly come up where you are then thrown together with people like Yeagerbomb. The Attack on Titan fanbase is toxic and you have to think carefully about where you discuss what.

Robert H.

I feel like a lot of people have a problem with it. I liked this post quite a bit, as it actually lists everything that's problematic about the ending chosen in the manga: https://www.reddit.com/r/titanfolk/comments/17njuxw/the_15_problems_of_attack_on_titan/ Theoretically you could talk about the other endings, be it No Requiem, but you'd have completely different story problems in the finale.

Robert H.

Holyshit! I knew the ending was controversial but that’s disgusting. Is one thing to hate the ending but those people are straight up racist. No wonder why people find AoT insufferable sometimes.

Jack SV

*FINALE SPOILERS* What’s quite bizarre to me is that there was a clear common ground between those who hated the ending and those who liked it, or at least found it thematically appropriate, and it was that it needed to be more fleshed out and cohesive. Like, that’s the #1 directing note Mappa have should have had when adapting this, and instead they compounded the complex and, at least to me, unclear interpersonal dynamics between the characters at the end without clearing up any of the actual lore/narrative gaps. I still need time for the anime ending to settle and to cement my thoughts around it, but I don’t think I’m going to change my mind that this story had a second opportunity to polish it’s ending (without necessarily doing an AOE or going against anything it was building towards, like some crazy people think), and they just waffled it. I’m not watching Attack on Titan because, for example, I need to know what happens to the Wall Colossal Titan users after the Titans ceased to exist, but providing at least a vague explanation as to why titans ceased to exist and why 120 year old Eldians aren’t suddenly popping up out of Colossal husks can help de-clutter “mental noise,” for lack of a better term. The way it’s currently presented leaves a lot of practical questions in the moment and detracts from the emotional engagement of Armin, Mikasa, and Eren/the end of their relationship when you have no idea what’s going on, but maybe that’s just me

My Toasty Toast

I completely agree with you. I watched it live in Japanese and then when the episode started adapting Chapter 137, I just started laughing in disbelief. I was sure they would change it because it was really criticized by many. And so many memes came out of it that I couldn't take anything about that scene seriously anymore. I also got bruises from my girlfriend on the couch because I had to stop laughing. And from Chapter 139 onwards, thankfully, they've minimally touched up the dialog, albeit still leaving a lot of unanswered questions that fans are trying to decipher. Many theories were being created for that purpose, some of which are just bullshit and some of which are very plausible and have been accepted as canon, with "canon" varying from faction to faction in the fan community.

Robert H.

That's quite an understatement. I think Attack on Titan is the only anime that managed to create not just an entire spectrum, but an entire 3D viewpoint space. The poll at the time alone to rate the final chapter with 1 to 5 stars is just a fucking flat line. https://64.media.tumblr.com/221e583afde23fc247dab1f3c53e691b/536c8271b79c070d-c8/s1280x1920/c06cb9b7a98477ef04693924736f151b9eae241e.png Ending Haters, Ending Defenders, Ending Neutral, Hopers, Doomers, AOE Chads, ANR Chads, the year-ago-banned Yeager Bombers, and whatnot. Especially because Attack on Titan addresses such a very political topic, you could also see the political compass on the fanbase. There was also a small Israel-Palestine war in the Attack on Titan community every few months. For the last 3 weeks I've been seeing Gaza on Eldia and the USA + Israel on Marley edited again in some Attack on Titan forums. It's just one of the most divided fanbases I know and somehow trying to navigate through it is a real challenge. If anyone is interested in why Yeagerbomb was banned: https://www.reddit.com/r/AttackOnRetards/comments/y7hmom/why_was_yeagerbomb_banned_a_short_compilation/

Robert H.

I don’t exactly fit the criteria as I read the manga when it originally ended a couple years ago (haven’t read it since), but I did find I needed to rewind some scenes a few times. My thoughts on the ending stayed largely the same, without spoiling, I think Mappa had an opportunity to make it more cohesive and clear and they missed it, although the end product is by no means poorly done. Just my opinion

My Toasty Toast

Really looking forward to your reaction to the end of AOT, the ending was very divisive in the manga

Wallas

Leon didn't like Auto Memory Dolls cause they were travelers just like his parents. That's the biggest reason why he wanted to not like her I think.

Your pre-discussion pretty much hit the nail on the head: In the anime it's more of a father-daughter relationship due to Violet's younger age (14 - 17, she did say 14, but was just a guess), in the book, where Violet is 17-20 at the beginning of the story, the relationship seems more romantic. And Major Gilbert is 26/27 at the time the war is won. In the book the age difference is 6 to 10 years, in the anime 10 to 13 years.

Robert H.

SPOILER FREE: I have a general question for the Attack on Titan anime onlies: Did you understand everything in the finale? (Answers to this question may contain spoilers, so only read the comments here below this answer if you have seen the episode) I'm thinking of giving them something so they can discuss it somehow after the episode. But instead of sending them several pages of theory and explanation posts from Reddit, I'd just send them the Melius Rewrite that tries to clear up some big question marks in the characters' dialog. https://imgur.com/a/AqkaJBd I'd certainly suggest Chapter 139 to them too, because Mappa did a few things differently in the adaptation of that, and it might give them a different perspective on the subject. https://ww8.readsnk.com/chapter/shingeki-no-kyojin-colored-chapter-139/

Robert H.

Okay, I didn't know that either. Awesome!

Robert H.

I got so happy to see Lucelia this episode, cause I love ep 3

Camelot B

lol the beginning. I hope Milena got better and Lola didn't get sick... I also had a persistent and annoying flu this days.

Camelot B

His range is so good I didn’t even notice and I always rewatch this episode

Salvatore

The fact that a lot of side characters in this can have their own show and it would still be good to watch is amazing

Salvatore

he knows how to pick them

LM Reactions

Uemura does indeed also play teenage/adult Thorfinn too! Most of the time his characters are absolute sweethearts so Leon fits perfectly into his roles he plays.

Sacha

he’s what???

LM Reactions

The fact that Leon’s voice actor is also our boy Thorfinn 😭😭😭 Uemura is such a talented VA and I adore whenever he comes up in projects I’m watching. While there are absolute masterpiece of episodes ahead for you to experience I have a real soft spot for episode 6. Kindred spirits who by chance meet at the right time in their lives is something I love to watch in stories and experience in real life too.

Sacha

Two options : 1-sleep 2- the better option

Salvatore

I love this episode. Leon shouting violets name at the end always makes me cry

Amber

This is one of my favorite episodes
