wasnt there supposed to be a new Wire reaction Saturday (yesterday)?

Shaun Eberle

God forbid people are allowed to grow their wealth. You can get caught up in the minutiae of what constitutes prosperity but the fact remains that the West is more prosperous than other parts of the world, however you parse it. Some Nordic countries have more billionaires per capita than the US, and I'm sure people like you would like the States to be more like them in many ways. It goes to show that the existence of billionaires in itself is a non-issue. Take issue with certain laws and regulations as much as you want, no one said you don't have a point there, but this myopic focus on billionaires is why no one takes this viewpoint seriously. I'm all for policies that improve life for poor or working class people. Address those..

Aj

The existence of billionaires is a huge factor in why a lot of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. Laws and regulations and institutions are set up to help the wealthy grow their wealth and to make it harder for the less fortunate from improving their socioeconomic status. Do the ~60% of people in the US who live paycheck to paycheck consider the west to be so prosperous? If our country is so prosperous why is the quality of life declining? Why is life expectancy in the US falling? Your claim "there are no pie in the sky solutions" implies that there is no real benefit to improving policies, as if it is an all or nothing situation. In reality there are many policies which could improve life for poor and working class people in the US. Unfortunately the billionaire and corporate class funnels billions of dollars into our political system and media outlets to suppress those ideas and demonize any type of spending on a social safety net.

Doug

The existence of billionaires is not the reason a lot of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. The majority of their wealth is not liquid. It goes into business interests, and the remainder is mostly stocks and investments. I didn't say they're special, but it's clear they often give back to the economy. I don't know what eradicating them is supposed to achieve, either. What, just hand out all of their cash to the less unfortunate? They wouldn't know what to do with it if they had it. The reason it has no basis in reality is that no one agrees with it. People just don't think that way. Our capitalistic system and the rich are a large reason why the the West is so prosperous.

Aj

You think we should just accept that 10 % of the country has 70% of it’s wealth while more Americans than ever before are living pay check to pay check? That 1% have 33% of the country’s wealth while the bottom 50% have less than 3% of the country’s total wealth? They aren’t inherently special because they have money and they are in fact hoarding money to themselves and their families that they make off the backs of exploited Americans (and exploited people overseas) They aren’t your friends and you’re not gonna become one, people with absurd wealth don’t make the world better just by existing They own most politicians and most news media, this isn’t some made up crap

I'm not the one writing all that bunk about billionaires, which is just a standard lefty talking point with no basis in reality. I don't even know what the phrase ''we don't need billionaires'' even means. You think they're hoarding all that wealth under their beds or something? Again, it's not that I disagree when certain kinds of taxation, but when I hear blanket statements like that, I can't help but scoff.

Aj

No one said anything about solutions, the word solution implies that a problem will go away, go ahead and reread what just a 4% millionaire tax did for kids The Wire is all about broken institutions which require government reform

space1999

Unfortunately there are no pie in the sky solutions, no matter what some people many think. Most of the ''solutions'' are wrong-headed and a result of a very lazy, non-comprehensive analysis.

Aj

Wanna help these kids? Hate to say it but Vote if you can’t do anything else (looking at y'all patrons with local elections 👀), we need politicians who are all for reform, they shouldn’t be afraid to tax the wealthy or create legalized drug sites A lot is at stake rn with states rewriting textbooks and enacting fascistic law changes (people are fighting to prevent poverty stricken children from having ANY systemic benefits) 5 percent of the World’s population 25 percent of the World’s prison population We don't need billionaires and we don't need people approaching billionairhood Millionaires being taxed LIGHTLY (4%!)  in Minnesota allowed the state to pay for the school lunches of ALL children in public schools  https://www.businessinsider.com/us-states-pay-free-lunch-public-school-students-heres-how-2023-8?amp Politicians on both sides are trying to make taxing billionaires illegal https://jacobin.com/2023/09/wealth-tax-supreme-court-katyal-safe Best way to prevent crime is to make quality of life better in high crime areas

I’m glad the season does focus a bit on a few girls but hard agree wish we had more female characters in general in the show honestly but especially here That short scene with Randy looking out while Tiffany (who can’t be more than 14) gets paid to have sex with the two boys is horrible but honestly it’s good the show is willing to show something so real

space1999

Was thinking how yeah the 4th season is centered around kids, but it's mainly young boys...Then I remembered Kendrick's amazing verse (2) in Sing About Me about a bit of what its like for black girls in poverty or a ghetto...also made me think how hyper-masculine Snoop is and has had to become as one result of what its like for girls

FD is one of the best out there. He really fills a niche that's sorely lacking

Chris Truex

Really recommend anyone interested check out this FD Signifier video, he’s a former history teacher who makes content about social issues This video specifically dives into issues unique to black boyhood including the ways in which public education is set up to fail them (Offers a really interesting perspective on the Will Smith incident at the Oscars) https://youtu.be/EtXPTGkuJIA?si=vcyEX6yQokJ4JSE_
